NUKING POLAR ICE
THEY THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA AT THE TIME
BOOK "HERE ON EARTH" BY TIM FLANNERY
Whenever you hear anyone telling us that we should make decisions based on science, we should look back at the many bizarre and downright insane proposals - some implemented, some not - that are a shame on the scientific establishment.
One case in point: Tim Flannery tells us how during the decades after Hiroshima, scientists started thinking about the many ways in which they could put this new toy - nuclear power - into use. Nuking the Arctic ice was one of them, an idea shared by a few American and Russian scientists and entrepeneurs alike. They told the public about the fantastic benefits that would ensue, all the mineral exploration after the melting of the ice, the improved and warmer climate... Nuking the ice was not the only way to accomplish this. They also suggested using chemicals. (Page 156)

And how about their idea of NUKING THE MOON?
the U.S. considered detonating an atomic bomb on the moon in an effort to intimidate the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War. Even astronomer Carl Sagan was involved in the discussion.
