Lake berryessa spillway

This image shows water spiralling down a huge hole. But this definitely isn’t a gateway to another world.  In reality, it’s simply a giant drain called a spillway to divert excess water.

Lake Berryessa in California, USA, can hold around 521 billion gallons of water – any more than that, and the excess begins to be drained off through  the spillway.  This year, for the first time in a decade, it rained so much in January and February that the lake reached capacity.  Now the 72ft-wide hole is funnelling the extra water away to prevent flooding.

Marcio Duranc, a 40-year-old photographer, captured the beautiful Poco Azul cavern: a 16-metre underground cave in Brazil
  • Photographer Marcio Duranc, 40, captured the sheer magnificence of this vast, 16-metre deep underground cave
  • Its transparent crystalline blue water and submerged trees make it difficult to tell where water ends and rocks begin
  • And tourists who visit the Poco Azul cavern in Chapada Diamantina National Park are encouraged to take a dip
  • The otherworldly cave is situated at the bottom of a sinkhole near the Paraguaçu River in Nova Redenção, on the eastern front of Chapada Diamantina.
  • In the 1990s, it was explored by cave diver and film maker Tulio Shargel, who found a large bone hidden in the sediment at the bottom of the pool.
  • The bone was later identified as part of the skeleton of a giant five tonne sloth, which became extinct during the Pleistocene period, more than 11,000 years ago.
  • Remarkably, a team of 30 aerologists then returned to the site to discover the remains of about forty different species of animals, most of them extinct.

Why is Oregon's ‘Lost Lake’ disappearing? Scientists say a lava tube is swallowing the water – but no one knows where it ends up.

During winter, a mysterious hole begins draining the Lost Lake in Oregon of all its water, leaving a barren landscape that has baffled scientists for centuries

STRANGE BUBBLES IN A BEAUTIFUL AND PEACEFUL CANADIAN LAKE - They erupt in fire if lit with a match - They are methane gas formed when microbes consume organic matter at the bottom of the lake

  • A photographer has captured amazing images of methane bubbles in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada
  • The pictures show a frozen lake with the icy 'circles' trapped underneath in fascinating formations
  • In the summer the bubbles simply rise to the surface and pop, but in the winter they are frozen within the ice
  • Methane is 25 times more potent as a heat-trapping gas than carbon dioxide, and ignites easily when lit

  • A photographer has captured amazing images of methane bubbles in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. Pictured are some methane gas bubbles underneath Vermillion Lake
These lakes may look like they are full of bizarre floating sea creatures, but they are actually filled with thousands of frozen bubbles.

Paul Zizka, 35, tracked down the natural phenomenon, which he photographed at Lake Minnewanka, the Vermillion Lake and Abraham Lake
Snapped across Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada, the natural wonders are made of highly flammable gas methane.
