    The victims include starlings, otters, cuttlefish and crayfish. But scientists fear these animals represent only a few of the UK species being threatened by our pill-popping habits.

    MONSTERS OF THE DEEP - THE STRANGE CREATURES DWELLING IN THE OCEAN

    Diver explores the world's oceans to photograph some of the Earth's most bizarre-looking creatures
    These remarkable creatures look like beings from another world - indeed, we know more about the surface of the moon than the deep sea habitat where they live.   Alexander Semenov spent hundreds of hours diving at sites across the globe, documenting rarely seen marine organisms including sea butterflies, marine worms and sea angels.  The 28-year-old photographer, from Russia, says his aim is to reveal the beauty of underwater life.

    'The Sea of Japan is the pearl of Russian seas. You need years and years to find even half of inhabitants of this sea', said the photographer.
     
    So we wonder how many of these species will be wiped out by the ongoing Fukushima spewing of nuclear waste into the sea.  Here on the North American west coast we have been witnessing many anomalies in sea creatures, and the complete disappearance of starfish.

    HEARTBREAKING SLAUGHTER OF WHALES AND DOLPHINS BY JAPANESE FISHERMEN - THEN THEY RAM ACTIVISTS' VESSEL

    Sea Shepherd claims the collision was deliberate and part of a sustained attack by three whaling ships on the protestors.  In Sunday's attack, which continued until 9am, the harpoon vessels overtook the Sea Shepherd ships, crossing their bows and coming within three to five metres in numerous "dangerous manoeuvres", Sea Shepherd claimed. 
     
    It said the Yushin Maru 3 struck the Bob Barker and quoted the ship's captain, Peter Hammarstedt, and  Siddarth Chakravarty of the Steve Irwin saying the two ships on several occasions had to steer out of the harpoon whalers' paths, narrowly avoiding potential collisions.  "The whaling vessels also made consecutive attempts to foul the propellers of the Sea Shepherd ships by dragging steel cable across the bow of the conservation ships."

    DOLPHINS GET HIGH BY EATING TOXINS RELEASED BY PUFFER FISH


    It makes dolphins lapse into a trance state.
     
    In an extraordinary scene filmed for a new TV series, the dolphins are shown gently passing the fish between them.
     
    Experts believe the creatures are using the toxins, which emerge from the puffer fish as part of its defence mechanism, for their own enjoyment.
     
    They nudge the fish with their snouts and as the toxin is released into the water, they seem to lapse into a trance-like state.  At one point the dolphins are seen floating just underneath the water's surface, apparently mesmerised by their own reflections.
     
    The dolphins were filmed gently playing with the puffer, passing it between each other for 20 to 30 minutes at a time, unlike the fish they had caught as prey which were swiftly torn apart.
     
    Zoologist and series producer Rob Pilley said that it was the first time dolphins had been filmed behaving this way.  He added: 'We saw the dolphins handle the puffers with kid gloves, very gently and delicately like they were almost milking them to not upset the fish too much or kill it.'  As a result the fish released various toxins as a defence.
     
    'The dolphins then seemed to  be mesmerised.'  He insisted that the scene couldn't have been a one-off encounter, saying: 'The dolphins were specifically going for the puffers and deliberately handling them with care.'

    ROMANTIC MALE FISH BUILD SANDCASTLES TO IMPRESS FEMALES

     
    A certain type of male fish that builds sandcastles to impress females and warn off rivals has provided an important clue about the evolution of new species.
     
    Cichlid fish, which live in Lake Malawi, East Africa, build the structures, known as bowers, once or twice a year so they have a place to mate.
     
    There are 200 species of sandcastle-building cichlid fish and each creates a differently shaped bower, which they then defend in a bid to attract suitable partners.
     
    British researchers from the University of Hull and the University of Nottingham have discovered that the exact shape of the bowers determines how many fights the male fish have with nearby rivals.
     

    MORE ABOUT THE CICHLID FISH

  • All species of cichlid fish care for their eggs and larvae and often nurture their free-swimming young until they are weeks or months old.
  • Communal parental care has been seen in some groups.
  • Some species lay their eggs in the open on rocks or bowers and the males usually patrol the couple's territory to repel intruders, while the females fan water over the eggs.
  • Some secretive species lay their eggs in caves, holes and even discarded snail shells, while 'ovophile mouthbrooders' incubate their eggs in their mouths as soon as they are laid.
  • 'Larvophile mouthbrooders' lay eggs in the open or in a cave but keep the hatched larvae safe in their mouths. This method of keeping larvae safe appears to have evolved independently in several groups of African cichlids.

    SEAL PUPS - ORPHANS OF THE MEGA-STORM THAT HIT BRITAIN'S COASTS ARE RESCUED

     
    PUPS WERE WASHED UP AFTER A TIDAL SURGE
    HIT THE EAST COAST OF BRITAIN

    More than 100 seal pups found washed up and away from their mothers after last week's awful weather when they were swept away from their mothers during the recent floods.  They were saved by rescue workers and are now under care at the Winch Wildlife Centre in Norfolk. 
     
    The adorable pups, many of them under three weeks old, are in need of constant care.  Each pup is expected to need up to five months’ rehabilitation after being separated from its mother.  Now the centre has reached full capacity. It would appreciate donations to maintain this heavy volume of storm-refugee baby seals. 
     
    Seal colonies are a common sight along the Norfolk coast as they come ashore to breed between November and January.  There had been fears that hundreds of seals would be killed when the highest tides on record hit the coast last Thursday and Friday.
     
    Pups cannot swim or survive without their mother’s milk until they have shed their distinctive white fur.At one breeding ground in Horsey, volunteers counted 440 pups on the beach before the surge and only 177 after it hit.

    DOLPHINS SAY I LOVE YOU WITH CAREFULLY SELECTED BOUQUETS OF SEAWEED

    New BBC documentary tells more about these intelligent and wonderful creatures. 
     
    A romantic courtship
     
    Courting males will spend hours looking for the longest and most perfect strand of seaweed to present to the objects of their desire.  Before handing it over, a hot-blooded dolphin will use the seaweed to show off his prowess: tossing it between his fins, tail and nose.
     
    If the female likes what she sees, she will accept the seaweed - and then drape and play with it seductively like a feather boa.  Now they are an item, the amorous pair will do the dolphin equivalent of cuddling - stroking each other with their fins - as they twist and spin around each other.
     
    Despite the elaborate foreplay, which can last over an hour, the act of love itself does not take long - around three seconds.  Females are not one-man-girls either.  During the mating season, they can be seduced several times a day by different members of the same pod of young males.  When sex happens, it’s more like shaking hands - and afterwards the pair will go their separate ways.
     
    Motherhood
     
    A year later, baby arrives after a labour that can last several hours. So newborns are born tail-first to stay attached to their mother’s oxygen supply - via the umbilical cord - as long as possible.  As soon as the cord snaps, the babies - around 90cm long - are guided by their mums to the surface so they can take their first gulp of air.
     
    The dolphin calves have stripes, like a baby’s wrinkles, from their time curled up in the womb, which fade after two weeks.  Like a human mother, dolphins lovingly stroke their infants using their fins in a version of a cuddle.  They also talk to their offspring constantly so babies learn to recognise their voices and find them when visibility in the water is poor.
     
    Babies babble
     
    Just as human babies babble to learn how to speak, young dolphins also practise by whistling and clicking.  They make these noises by adjusting the size of their blowholes as they force air out.
     
    Every dolphin has its own signature whistle, which is used like a name to call one another.  But while we humans decide on our children’s names, dolphin babies name themselves - by practising and deciding which noises they  like best.
     
    Babies' playtime
     
    Like human babies, dolphins use their mouths to explore everything, gently using their lips and tongue to explore the textures of any object the come across.  Similar to magpies, they also collect shiny stones and shells like trinkets, which they love offering to each other as gifts.  They are also known to collect sponges and balance them on their noses.
     
    Boys will be boys
     
    They love to surf the huge waves at the bow of oil tankers, going up to speeds of 30mph.  It’s like playing chicken for them because they could bash into the sides. Unlike most animals, much of what they do is simply for fun.
     
    Best Friends Forever - including 'bromance'
     
    Males and females spend most of their lives apart, living in single-sex pods of around 30 animals.  Within these groups, most dolphins have a best friend - and they stick together all their lives, through thick and thin. 
     
    The best mate of a female dolphin will act like a sort of midwife when  her friend gives birth, protecting her from danger.  The pair will also be like aunties to each other’s offspring, helping to raise them and forming a baby-sitting circle with the rest of the females.
     
    Young males also have lifelong best friends. Rob says: ‘They will go on the pull for females together, look for fun things to do and watch each other’s backs in times of danger. It’s a real bromance.’
     
    Grumpy old men
     
    When they are young, male dolphins move in packs and behave like any gang of young human males - racing each other, being boisterous and going on the hunt for young females.  But after a few years, the older, more experienced ones tend to break off on their own for some peace and quiet.
     
    Dolphins have a life-span of around 30 years - and by the age of 20 male dolphins may feel like they are getting too old for it all.  It’s as if they’ve enough of all the rough-housing and take life a bit easier. They get like grumpy old men.’
     
    Looks are important - They exfoliate daily
     
    There is a good reason why dolphins have such perfect skin - they exfoliate. While other marine creatures rely on barnacles and sucker fish to do the job, dolphins stay stream-lined by using coral to scrub themselves. Incredibly, they shed a complete coating of skin every three hours. To help the process, they can often be seen queuing up to rub themselves along a favourite area of coral.  It's the equivalent of a spa.

    BABY DOLPHIN JUMPS FOR JOY AFTER BEING FREED FROM PLASTIC BAG

     
    A baby dolphin whose life was in danger after getting trapped up in a plastic bag appeared to thank his rescuers by doing a little dance.
     
    The tiny mammal was filmed by a group of fishermen thrashing about in the waters off the coast of Sao Paulo in Brazil.
     
    As they get closer, they notice the stricken animal is inside a green shopping bag.
     
    They use a net to scoop him up and haul him into the boat then one of the men removes the bag as the agitated calf whips its tail around.
     
    The dolphin is then returned to the ocean near Fort Itapiu.
     
    But to the joy of all those on aboard, the dolphin suddenly flips out of the water and waggles back and forth in the upright position - a gesture interpreted by some as a way of saying thank you.

    WEST COAST TIDAL ENERGY PROJECT THREATENS WHALES

    PUGET Sound killer whales retained an important protection recently when a petition to remove them from the endangered-species list failed.
     
    Pacific Legal Foundation in Sacramento had challenged the orcas’ protection under the Endangered Species Act, and the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA) rejected the petition.
    But that does not mean our orcas are now out from danger.
     
    The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is finalizing a $10 million grant for an experimental tidal-energy project at the bottom of Puget Sound in Admiralty Inlet that poses a new threat to orcas that hunt for food there.
     
    Much has been written — some positive, some negative — about the DOE providing research and development funding and financial incentives to jump-start new and innovative energy technologies that might not get off the ground otherwise.
     
    President Obama’s plan to combat climate change has the country debating how we can generate energy in new ways and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.
     
    On the plus side, the DOE’s programs push the boundaries of innovation and have the potential to develop technologies that can help wean America from its dependence on foreign energy.
     
    However, this $10 million tidal-energy project could prove catastrophic.
     
    The project could devastate elegant and innocent marine mammals — specifically, the federally protected orca pods scientists have documented traveling through and foraging in Admiralty Inlet.
     
    These magnificent iconic symbols of the Pacific Northwest are so beloved that neighbors and tourists flock to the area just to catch a glimpse of them.
     
    This massive pilot tidal-energy project intends to place two turbines, each 10 meters high and weighing 386 metric tons, on the inlet floor. A series of blades spin in the middle of both to generate electricity.
     
    In 2009, OpenHydro failed with the pilot project in the Bay of Fundy on the Atlantic Coast when all 12 blades were destroyed within 20 days of installation. Tidal flows were two-and-half-times stronger than the turbine was designed to handle.
     
    The noise and vibrations from the turbines will range between 125 and 175 decibels. Orcas react strongly to a pain threshold of 135 decibels. With the possibility of other sound pollution that could mask the turbines, it’s possible a whale could swim into the blades.
     
    It could be argued that the turbines spin relatively slowly. But given the ocean currents, the Snohomish County Public Utility District abandoned an electronic brake to stop the turbines in the event of an emergency.
     
    Now the plan for an emergency would be to knock a locking pin through the spinning turbines using a remote-controlled submersible vessel, which could be like thrusting a stick through the spokes of a spinning wheel.
     
    If an orca or other endangered species are stuck in the blades, is it possible to take immediate action to prevent death or serious injury? The answer is no.
     
    Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) staff recently recommended this project’s approval based on analysis from the DOE-funded Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Not only was this analysis limited in scope, but can we trust this lab’s impartiality given how it’s funded?
     
    The report doesn’t consider the consequences of a baby whale becoming entangled in these turbines. Nor does it consider project noise, louder than a jackhammer, at levels legally constituting “harassment.” FERC reached its conclusion without benefit of a biological opinion from NOAA, the agency with the appropriate expertise. If we lose one orca the whole population is at risk.
     
    The future of our planet depends on combating climate change, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of protected species, threatened by experimental projects financed with taxpayer dollars. There is simply too much risk in this project, risk that is entirely avoidable, and too much hope for success tied to unproven innovations.
     
    Let’s take a closer look at this dangerous tidal-energy project, and consider whether it really creates a better world for us and for future generations. Let’s implore the federal government and the Snohomish County Public Utility District to move their experiment someplace where it will not do harm to federally protected species.

    PARASITE EATS FISH TONGUE AND TAKES ITS PLACE - AND IT CHANGES ITS SEX

     
    The Gulf of California parasite Cymothoa exigua  targets a fish by infiltrating its gills and latching onto its tongue. It proceeds to not only consume the organ, but will then replace it with its own body, providing the fish with a new fully functioning tongue it uses (probably a bit begrudgingly) to grind food against tiny teeth on the roof of its mouth.
     
    This remarkable attack is the only known instance in the animal kingdom of a parasite functionally replacing an organ of its host.
     
    According to marine biologist Rick Brusca of the University of Arizona, while C. exigua targets several other fish, attaching to their tongues and draining their blood, only with the rose snapper does it devour and completely replace the organ as an operating structure.
     
    And he stresses that while there are hundreds of such species of tongue-targeting isopods, contrary to many media reports, only C. exigua can actually truly assume the duties of the organ.
     
    Then it gets really complicated
     
    These isopods are protandrous hermaphrodites: They first mature into males, but then switch sexes to become females.
     
    When more than one C. exigua lands in a given fish’s gills, it begins to mature into a male, but when the second one appears, said Brusca, it “stimulates the first one to change sex and become a female and crawl from the gills up through the throat and attach to the tongue, and then this new second one is the male that will impregnate her.”
     
    The female next anchors herself to the tongue with seven pairs of legs, each tipped with a highly muscularized spine that looks a bit like a scorpion’s stinger. It is here where she’ll mate and spend the rest of her life experiencing the world as the snapper does, only, you know, without the excruciating pain.
     
    As she grows, she molts just like any other arthropod and feeds on the snapper’s tongue not by gnawing away, but by sucking the blood out of it.
     
    “They have five sets of jaws,” said Brusca, “and all five of them are modified into these stiletto-like devices, and a couple of them are like long lances, if you will, that slice open the tissue of the host fish.
     
    And then the others operate together kind of like a soda straw to draw the blood up out of the wound that they’ve created.”
     
    In this way C. exigua will slowly drain the life out of the snapper’s tongue, which atrophies from the tip on back, bit by bit, until nothing but the muscular stub remains. This the isopod now grasps with her rearmost three or four pairs of legs, essentially becoming the fish’s new tongue. And the isopod has likely evolved like this to keep her host alive, according to Brusca, allowing her more time to rear her young.
     
    But once the tongue is gone, the female is left without a food supply. So as her young continue to develop, she lives solely on stored energy supplies, according to Brusca.
     
    Scientists aren’t yet sure at what point the young are released, or how exactly they find fish of their own, but Brusca reckons that the female may wait until her host is schooling with other fish to cut her offspring loose from the brood pouch, giving the young plenty of targets.
     
    With her procreation complete, the female isopod, who lost her ability to swim as she matured, “probably lets go and leaves or gets swallowed, but she’s out of the picture,” said Brusca. “And now you’ve got a fish with no tongue, so it’s not going to survive either. So it’s really a case of true parasitism. In fact, the fish ends up getting sacrificed for the sake of the isopod.”
     
    It’s still not known quite why C. exigua goes so far in its parasitism of rose snappers, where in other species it merely sips from the tongue — not destroying it and taking over its job. “Maybe the tongue in the rose snapper is particularly susceptible,” said Brusca. “Maybe it doesn’t have as good a vascularization as other fish tongues.”
     
    There’s still much to be learned here, but the advantages of such a lifestyle are clear: The female isopod not only gets a steady meal, but also a perfectly safe bunker in which to raise her young. Like any other creature, her purpose is to pass along her genes. And with her mission accomplished, she goes down with the ship.

    BEAUTIFUL SURREAL VIDEO OF A WHALE SWIMMING IN A FOREST

     
    This surreal short video made by Gentleman Scholar for Whales and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) is so striking, you have to see it (make sure to watch in HD and full-screen mode).
     
    It silently makes the point that if whales and dolphins (and other ocean creatures) were floating around us all the time this visibly, maybe we would care more about their protection.
     
    Sadly, for most people, what's out of sight is out of mind, and our ocean ecosystems are suffering tremendously from overfishing, pollution, and global warming.

    SALMON RETURN TO SPAWN AT THEIR EXACT BIRTHPLACE

    The salmon's dramatic life cycle shows how they sacrifice themselves by making a long and difficult journey for one last selfless act in order to create more life.

    The case of salmon coming home to one of the last salmon waterways on Vancouver Island.
     
    Tourists and visitors watch as salmon arrive to Goldstream River in the city of Victoria, British Columbia.
     
    After the journey south, achieved through scent, sight and a natural ability to find magnetic north, the salmon begin to make their way up the river when the temperature drops, the rain increases and leafs start dropping from the trees, releasing tannins into the water, the scent from which is another sign for the salmon to start swimming.
     
    The females begin to swim against the current of the river as they search for the exact spot they were born. They can get within a metre of their own birthplace, using scent to pinpoint the location.
     
    They begin to dig holes to lay eggs in, as the males fight one another for fertilization rights.
     
    There are probably one female for every four male, so there is a lot of fighting.
     
    Fertilization happens at night. The female sinks into her nest, about one foot deep now, and leaves her eggs, at which point the dominant male has 15 seconds to fertilize them before the eggs are ruined.
     
    It’s this entire spectacle which causes the parking lot of Goldstream Park to spill over to the sides of the Trans-Canada Highway every autumn.
     
    Once the eggs are hatched the salmon’s purpose in life has come to an end and, with it, their life.   Both the male and female fish, having laid and fertilized all the eggs they can, die.
     
    It’s far from the end, though.  What park staff refer to as “the clean up crew” begins its work. Multiple species of birds and mammals, including hundred of eagles and some bears and wolves, make their way to the river to feast on the dead fish.
     
    The rotting carcasses, sometimes dragged miles inland, also go on to fertilize the surrounding forest. Nutrients from the open ocean can be found in Goldstream Park trees from this process.
     
    "Everything that exists around a salmon run is because of salmon,” says the Goldstream Nature House  manager. “Everything in the park is connected to salmon."
     
    Long after the scavengers have left, as the sun moves closer to our part of the world and the waters of Goldstream River begin to warm up in the early days of spring, the labours of the prior fall begin to pay off.
     
    The eggs begin to hatch, first into alevin, and then into fry, thousands of them, wiggling their way out of the gravel to begin their trip to the open ocean, ready to face a dangerous life in the hopes of starting the entire process over again.
     
    Etiquette for visitors: The salmon are not used to the confined space of the river, having come from the open ocean, and are startled easily. Even a leaf falling off a tree can scare a salmon the point where it has a heart attack and dies.
     
     Visitors are asked not to wear bright colours, to leave umbrellas at home, to not throw anything into or across the river and to keep dogs well away.
     
    The best time to see the spawning is mid to late October, when the salmon begin their journey up the river. The exact timeframe depends on the weather. After the run, when all the mature salmon have died, is also an interesting, if not fragrant, time to visit.
     
    Out of every 4,000 salmon eggs hatched, about the maximum a single female salmon can lay, four will make it back to the river to procreate.

    REASON WHY GIANT OARFISH WASHED UP ON CALIFORNIA BEACH STILL A MYSTERY

     
    Scientists found that one of the oarfish was pregnant, and the other was full of tapeworms. 
     
    These animals, who live at a depth of 3000 ft (915 meters), feed on zooplankton and crustaceans.  They are the largest bony fish in the sea and can grow up to 50 ft.

    NOISE FROM WIND TURBINE CONSTRUCTION IS KILLING OCEAN MAMMALS


    Wind turbine construction noise is killing ocean mammals such as porpoises, dolphins and whales, by damaging their hearing.  Without proper hearing abilities they can't hunt or conduct other life-sustaining activities. Up to 200 decibels have been registered during construction.
     
    There are ways to create a bubble curtain around the worksite, so as to prevent noise propagation, but this technology is rendered useless by strong currents.
