ARE THEY ALIVE? - LIFELESS PARTICLES BECOME LIFE-LIKE BY SWITCHING BEHAVIOR IN A FIXED ENVIRONMENT, shows study by Emory University

  • A few years ago I read the science fiction novel WATERMIND by M.M. Buckner (2008).
  • It described how electronic and assorted chemical waste dumped into a pond begins to organize itself into a neural net.
  • I recommend this intriguing novel in spite of its few shortcomings.  The central idea is fascinating.
And here comes the latest news on how 'lifeless stuff' behaves like living matter.

Physicists at Emory University have shown how a system of lifeless particles can become "life-like" by collectively switching back and forth between crystalline and fluid states -- even when the environment remains stable.

The Burton lab studies tiny, plastic particles as a model for more complex systems. The particles are suspended in a vacuum chamber filled with a plasma -- ionized argon gas.  Credit: Justin Burton, Emory University

Physical Review Letters recently published the findings, the first experimental realization of such dynamics.

"We've discovered perhaps the simplest physical system that can consistently keep changing behavior over time in a fixed environment," says Justin Burton, Emory assistant professor of physics. "In fact, the system is so simple we never expected to see such a complex property emerge from it."

Many living systems -- from fireflies to neurons -- switch behaviors collectively, firing on and then shutting off. The current paper, however, involved a non-living system: Plastic particles, tiny as dust specks, that have no "on" or "off" switches.

"The individual particles cannot change between crystalline and fluid states," Burton says. "The switching emerges when there are collections of these particles -- in fact, as few as 40. Our findings suggest that the ability for a system to switch behaviors over any time scale is more universal than previously thought."

PHYSICS AND BALLET - And how PHYSICS can teach us lessons for a happier personal life

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I  have always loved classical ballet.  I took lessons as a youngster and still practice it daily.  It's the most beautiful and complete art form.  Although I did not have what it takes to be a decent ballerina, I loved ballet all the same.  It's been an unrequited love, just as my love for physics.
I am no scientist and I could have never been one.  I'm absolutely terrible at math.  And I mean really, really terrible.  But among all subjects for reading and study, physics has always been the true love of my life, especially quantum physics and astrophysics.  The reason?   Physics is full of wonder, and sometimes offers tentative answers to the Big Questions of Life and the Universe - questions we usually ask from religion and philosophy.
Physics is a lot cooler than religion because you can take pleasure learning about the mysteries of the universe with complete freedom to explore ideas, disagree, question, and imagine.
Britannica.com defines it like this:  Physics, science that deals with the structure of matter and the interactions between the fundamental constituents of the observable universe.   In the broadest sense, physics is concerned with all aspects of nature on both the macroscopic and submicroscopic levels.
In one sentence, physics is about everything in physical reality. It is the attempt to learn and understand how matter and energy work, from tiny invisible particles to the entire universe, and the still mysterious dark matter and dark energy.
In science all answers are temporary, until the next discovery.  Aside from efforts by intellectually dishonest and politically-correct academics to cement their own dogmas, there should not be any dogmas in science.  Anything and everything should be open to question.
Now a little personal anecdote:  Many years ago I came upon a passage in Beyond the Quantum by Michael Talbot, where the author explains the work of physicist Ilya Prigogine.  It was physics, all right, but what I read was pure poetry.  At the time I had some personal issues, and so I was touched by how I could see my own conflict symbolically reflected within a physics context.
  • Particle physics is one of the most beautiful and amazing sciences, one that sparks the imagination and seems to embrace mind-boggling concepts that up to recently resided only in the realm of religion.
  • However, radical feminism has managed to desecrate this last bastion of scholarship.
  • Whitney Stark, an LGBT researcher at the University of Arizona, has come up with a revolutionary idea:  Feminist physics.
  • After you read this article, with your mind still spinning by her explanation, don't miss a very witty comment by a Breitbart reader.
  • But first, here is the scholar, from a picture on her Twitter account, an academic paid for by hard-working taxpayers.
University of Arizona Gender Scholar Creates a Feminist Brand of Physics to Combat Bigotry
A researcher at the University of Arizona claims to have created a feminist brand of quantum physics to weed out the bigotry that she believes follows from a study of Newtonian physics.
Researcher Whitney Stark of the University of Arizona’s Institute for LGBT Studies claims to have invented a new form of physics, intersectional quantum physics, that combats the alleged bigotries of classical science.
“Intersectionality and quantum physics can provide for differing perspectives on organizing practices long used by marginalized people, for enabling apparatuses that allow for new possibilities of safer spaces, and for practices of accountability,” she writes in the abstract for her paper, “Assembled Bodies: Reconfiguring Quantum Identities.”
CAN YOU CHANGE THE PAST? - PARTICLE PHYSICS EXPERIMENTS SAY YES - The counterintuitive theories of Dr. Robert Lazlo and other scientists - The arrow of time can go backwards
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Early 20th century physics brought us a revolution in our understanding of physical reality, particularly regarding the quantum world, relativity, time and space.   Einstein, Plank, Heisenberg, and others, challenged 'truths' that had gone unquestioned by science for centuries.
The team proposes that parallel universes really exist, and that they interact. That is, rather than evolving independently, nearby worlds influence one another by a subtle force of repulsion. They show that such an interaction could explain everything that is bizarre about quantum mechanic
We can live our entire lives without ever thinking about those new revolutionary concepts.  Aside from availing ourselves of an avalanche of new technology, our daily lives work just fine with basic 19th century ideas of time and space.

We never question the notion of the arrow of time, for instance, which states that time runs from past to present to future, and never backwards, and that the past is unchangeable.

Following are two columns with revolutionary and counterintuitive concepts of time and consciousness by Dr. Robert Lanza, followed by his two videos where he explains his theories in easy to understand terms.

As an introduction, please watch this fun cartoon video explaining the bizarre world of quantum physics:

VIDEO:  HOW YOU CAN CHANGE THE PAST

Does the Past Exist Yet? Evidence Suggests Your Past Isn’t Set in Stone

By Robert Lanza, MD
The author is currently Head of Astellas Global Regenerative Medicine, and is Chief Scientific Officer of the Astellas Institute for Regenerative Medicine and Adjunct Professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. His current research focuses on stem cells and regenerative medicine and their potential to provide therapies for some of the world's most deadly and debilitating conditions.   He is the author of "Biocentrism - How Life and Consciousness are the Keys to Understanding the True Nature of the Universe", and  the recently published "Beyond Biocentrism

Recent discoveries require us to rethink our understanding of history. “The histories of the universe,” said renowned physicist Stephen Hawking “depend on what is being measured, contrary to the usual idea that the universe has an objective observer-independent history.”

Is it possible we live and die in a world of illusions?

Physics tells us that objects exist in a suspended state until observed, when they collapse in to just one outcome.

Paradoxically, whether events happened in the past may not be determined until sometime in your future — and may even depend on actions that you haven’t taken yet.

The following article was originally published in 2015, but it's so fascinating, here it is again:

Can the past be changed by the FUTURE? Bizarre quantum experiment by Professor Kater Murch suggests time can run backwards
  • Scientists probed the quantum mechanical properties of single particles
  • The particles don't have a fixed state until they are observed by scientist
  • Study found knowing future outcome of particle also changes initial state
  • They believe particles change their state due to scientist's knowledge
  • This suggests that time could runs both backwards and forwards
  • If this proves true, it could mean that we're doing now has been influenced by the decision made by a future version of us, the study claims

  • The theory follows another postulated by scientists back in December. They proposed that at the moment of the Big Bang (illustrated), a 'mirror universe' to our own was created that moves in the opposite direction through time - and intelligent beings in each one would perceive the other to be moving backwards

    DOES BIZARRE BEHAVIOR BY QUANTUM PARTICLES INDICATE THE EXISTENCE OF PARALLEL UNIVERSES? - Professor Bill Poirier's "Many Interacting Worlds" theory seems to indicate so.

    Strange behavior of quantum particles may indicate the existence of parallel universes

    By John Davis, Phys.org

    It started about five years ago with a practical chemistry question.

    Little did Bill Poirier realize as he delved into the of complex molecules that he would fall down the rabbit hole to discover evidence of other parallel worlds that might well be poking through into our own, showing up at the quantum level.
    • In his theory, Poirier postulates that small particles from many worlds seep through to interact with our own, and their interaction accounts for the strange phenomena of quantum mechanics.
    • Such phenomena include particles that seem to be in more than one place at a time, or to communicate with each other over great distances without explanations.
    • Likewise, quantum communication of faraway particles – something Albert Einstein called "spooky action at a distance" – is actually due to interaction of nearby worlds.
    The Texas Tech University professor of chemistry and biochemistry said that quantum mechanics is a strange realm of reality. Particles at this atomic and subatomic level can appear to be in two places at once.

    STRANGE PATTERN IN THE UNIVERSE - BLACK HOLES ARE ALIGNED, scientists discover

  • Eerie observations were made by the Very Large Telescope in Chile
  • It found alignment between huge interstellar objects called quasars
  • Quasars are galaxies with supermassive black holes at their centres
  • Scientists looked at rotation of the central supermassive black holes
  • They were parallel to one other over distances of billions of light-years
  • Probability alignments are down to chance is less than one per cent
  • 'This may be a hint that there is a missing ingredient in our current models of the cosmos,' researcher Dominique Sluse said

  • A European research team has found that the rotation axes of the central supermassive black holes in a sample of quasars are parallel to each other over distances of billions of light-years. An artist's impression of the alignment is pictured

    WATCH BUBBLES FREEZE IN SLOW MOTION - Hidden enchantments of nature made visible through modern technology

    Sony Ultra HD cameras capture delicate structures turning into ice before shattering.

    An incredible natural phenomenon has been captured on video for the first time as washing-up bubbles are shown freezing in mid-air. As the bubbles hit the air, they are shown crystallising and turning into hollow blocks of ice in slow motion (pictured)

  • Video was directed by Leila and Damien de Blinkk in Whistler, Canada
  • They used 4K cameras to record crystal-like structures of ice forming
  • As these structures spread, they are shown creating a solid outer shell
  • Film then records bubbles shattering, and shards of ice falling to the ground

  • A series of 4K cameras were positioned to captured the bubbles as they hit the air.  Shortly after each appears, the crystal-like structures of the ice are shown forming and bonding together.

    THE MYSTERIOUS PHENOMENON OF STAR GRAVITY DARKENING

    The Mysterious Phenomenon Of "Gravity Darkening"

    Astronomy is the one science in which the phrase "the possibilities are endless" really means something.

     There are all kinds of strange phenomena in space — one of which uses gravity to brighten and darken certain stars.

    With so much historical emphasis on establishing the fact that the Earth revolves, rotates, precesses, and otherwise acts very much as if it isn't the center of the universe, we forget that the sun moves as well. It travels through space, along with the rest of the galaxy. It wobbles as the pull of various planets revolving around it moves it this way and that. It also rotates, spinning like a top.

    Most stars rotate. Stars are generally formed by matter, pulled together by gravity, swirling like water around a drain. The swirl doesn't go away as the matter collapses inwards, it just translates into spin. Some stars spin very, very fast indeed.

    These ultra-fast spinners presented a brief mystery to scientists. They darkened around their equators, and brightened up at the poles. The faster a star spun, the more pronounced the effect was.

    What about spin caused the poles to burn bright and the equator of a star to darken?'

    THE CLOAKING DEVICE IS ALMOST HERE - SCIENTISTS BUILD INVISIBLE MATERIAL USING LIGHT

    Scientists at the University of Cambridge have developed an 'invisible' metamaterial. They say their technique can be scaled up to cloak large objects. Scientists at the University of Cambridge develop 'invisible' metamaterial
  • They say their technique can be scaled up to cloak large objects
  • It involves stringing together gold nanoparticles as a metamaterial with light
  • The metamaterial can be used to alter interaction with light and make it reflect the 'wrong' way, making the material appear different or invisible
  • These strings are then connected in layers and make a true cloaking device

  • Illustration by Ventsislav Valev - It depicts an efficient route to manufacturing nanomaterials with light through plasmon-induced laser-threading of gold nanoparticle strings

    What is a metamaterial?
    According to the Institute of Physics, metamaterials can bend electromagnetic radiation such as light around an object to give the appearance that it isn’t there.

    To date some researchers have used such properties of metamaterials to create devices that can bend certain forms of radiation such as near-infrared radiation.  So far, however, producing the same effect with visible light has proved more of a challenge

    QUANTUM TRAVEL TO THE PAST? - SCIENTISTS MOVE PHOTONS THROUGH TIME

    Wormhole - Mark Garlick , Corbis
    Could time travel soon become a reality? Physicists simulate sending quantum light particles to the past for the first time

  • University of Queensland researchers say photons can move through time
  • A simulation of two wormhole-travelling photons found they could interact
  • This suggests, at the smallest scales, jumping through time is possible
  • The experiment could solve some famous theories that 'prevent' time travel
  • But whether this will be possible on a larger scale remains to be seen

  • A group of scientists have, for the first time, simulated how two time-travelling photons would interact, suggesting that, at a quantum level at least, jumping through time might be possible.

    The study used photons - single particles of light - to simulate quantum particles travelling back through time.  By studying their behaviour, the scientists revealed possible bizarre aspects of modern physics.

    In the simulation, the researchers examined two possible outcomes for a time-travelling photon.
    For the first, ‘photon one’ would travel through a wormhole into the past and interact with its older version, reports The Speaker.

    In the second, ‘photon two’ travels through normal space-time but interacts with a photon that is stuck in a time-travelling loop through a wormhole, known as a closed timelike curve (CTC).
    Simulating the behaviour of photon two allowed the behaviour of photon one also to be studied - and the results revealed that time travel on a quantum level seems to be possible.
    By definition ‘quantum’ refers to the smallest possible particles that can independently exist - such as photons.

    However, whether this same simulation proves time travel is possible for more larger particles or groups of particles, such as atoms, remains unclear.

    Photon in wormhole (Martin Ringbauer)
    In 1991 it was first predicted that time travel would be possible in the ‘quantum world’ because quantum particles behave almost outside the realms of physics.

     'The properties of quantum particles are "fuzzy" or uncertain to start with, so this gives them enough wiggle room to avoid inconsistent time travel situations,' said professor Timothy Ralph, one of the researchers on the latest study.  The results also give a better understand to how two theories in physics, on the biggest and smallest scales, are able to relate to one another.

    'The question of time travel features at the interface between two of our most successful yet incompatible physical theories ' Einstein's general relativity and quantum mechanics,' said PhD student Martin Ringbauer from the University of Queensland.  'Einstein's theory describes the world at the very large scale of stars and galaxies, while quantum mechanics is an excellent description of the world at the very small scale of atoms and molecules.'

    Einstein's theory suggests the possibility of travelling backwards in time by following a space-time path that returns to the starting point in space but at an earlier time - a closed timelike curve (CTC).

    This possibility has puzzled physicists and philosophers alike since it was discovered by Austrian-American scientist Kurt Gödel in 1949, as it seems to cause paradoxes in the classical world.  These include the 'grandparents paradox', where a time traveller could stop their grandparents from meeting, thus preventing the time traveller's birth.  This would make it impossible for the time traveller to have set out in the first place.  But this new research suggests such interactions are indeed possible - albeit only on a quantum level for now.

    Scientists in the US have devised a series of new experiments to probe the quantum mechanical properties of single particles.

    These particle have a state that is not merely unknown, but totally undefined before it is measured.

    The act of measurement itself that forces the particle to collapse to a definite state - as evidenced in the infamous Schrödinger's cat thought experiment.

    Professor Kater Murch at Washington University has found that by knowing the future outcome of a particle, its state in the past altered.   Without knowing the information, the state is more likely to remain the same.  In other words, knowing future events can change the past.

    If this proves true in our 'classical' world, it would mean that what we're doing now has been influenced by the decision made by a future version of us.

    This all remains theory, but physicists have created devices that allowed them to measure these fragile quantum systems to see if this really is the case in the quantum world.

    POCKET MOLECULAR SENSOR - USE SMARTPHONE TO IDENTIFY THE MOLECULAR STRUCTURE OF ANY SUBSTANCE - A STAR TREK INVENTION BY ISRAELI COMPANY -

    SciO in action - Consumer Physics
    Have you ever wondered what is really in the food we eat, or the air we breathe?   What about the difference between two different types of fabrics or brands of aluminum foil?

    An Israeli company has dared to explore the mystery of modern surroundings - and put the tools to measure the molecular structure of any object in the hands of every smartphone user worldwide.

    Meet SCiO, a tiny molecular sensor which syncs with any smartphone to instantly scan and spit back useful information about any physical object.

    The project is the brainchild of a Kickstarter campaign by Tel Aviv-based Consumer Physics, which has raised over $1.6 million in financial support in a matter of weeks.

    How does it work? The device includes an optical sensor, called a spectrometer, that collects the light reflected from a scan of the object and sends data, via Bluetooth and the smartphone app, to a cloud server. Within seconds, an analysis is delivered back to the user with relevant information.

    The promotional video showcases the many practical uses the device could have for the everyday user, including determining a meal's nutritional value, whether or not a food is ripe, and whether or not someone is dehydrated.  Each is determined through various apps offered in the umbrella app for the device, with options for more apps to be added after SCiO is launched. SCiO will begin shipping in December, according to the product's campaign page.

    STANFORD PHYSICIST - HOW THE MIND AFFECTS ATOMIC PARTICLES AND MOLECULES

    Stanford University Professor Emeritus William A. Tiller has been researching a level of physical reality hitherto undetectable with conventional measurement instruments.  He says two kinds of substances exist:

    1. The electric atom/molecule level: Substances on this level can be measured with traditional instruments. We can measure them because they are electric-charge based.

    2. The magnetic information waves level: Tiller explains in an introduction to his research on his website: “This new level of substance, because it appears to function in the physical vacuum (the empty space between the fundamental electric particles that make up our normal electric atoms and molecules), is currently invisible to us and to our traditional measurement instruments.”

    This second type of substance has great power, and it is affected by human thought.

    Power of the Magnetic Information Waves
    Tiller put the energy of the magnetic information waves level into perspective in an interview for the documentary “What the Bleep Do We Know?” (See the interviews below) He compared the latent energy of the entire known universe to the latent energy in the vacuum inside a single hydrogen atom.

    The latent energy in one atom is a trillion times that estimated to exist in the space of the known universe.

    “Just that little bit of vacuum outweighs all the mass and all the planets and all the stars,” he said. This comparison assumes the universe is fairly flat, which astronomers say it is. Tiller said the calculations are not 100 percent accurate, but they are accurate enough to give us an idea of the amount of energy in this second type of substance he talks about in the vacuum.

    How Human Intention Takes Effect
    Tiller says he has been able to detect this hitherto invisible substance, but only when it interacts with the electric molecule/atom type substance we can conventionally measure.

    Human consciousness spurs this interaction.

    An intention projected from a person’s mind seems to increase the conductivity between the atom/molecule level and the vacuum level.

    “Consciousness lifts the higher thermodynamic free energy state [of the vacuum level], then we can access the physics of the vacuum,” Tiller says. “Accessing that new physics allows intention to bring forth effects you wouldn’t imagine.”

    The consciousness can, in a way, affect or interact with a power greater than anything conventional instruments have been able to measure thus far.

    13 YEAR OLD BRITISH BOY BUILDS NUCLEAR REACTOR

  • Jamie Edwards' reactor was able to smash two hydrogen atoms together
  • This made him youngest person to create helium through nuclear fusion
  • Fusion took place in a controlled environment at his school in Lancashire
  • Head teacher Jim Hourigan said: ‘I was a little nervous when Jamie suggested this but he reassured me he wouldn’t blow the school up'

  • Jamie Edwards built the reactor from scratch in a bid to be younger than American Taylor Wilson who completed a reactor aged 14 in 2008

    NOT A JOKE - A NEW STATE OF MATTER DISCOVERED INSIDE CHICKENS' EYES

    A new state of matter has been discovered in the eye of a chicken.
    Never before seen in biology, 'disordered hyperuniformity' is an arrangement of particles that allows material to behave like both a crystal and a liquid.
    Along with eggs, soup and rubber toys the list of the humble rooster's most lasting legacies may eventually include optics that can transmit light with the efficiency of a crystal and the flexibility of a liquid.

    DISORDERED HYPERUNIFORMITY

    Materials in this state are like crystals in the way they keep the density of particles consistent across large spatial distances.
    But these systems are also like liquids because they have the same physical properties in all directions.
    Researchers say this may be the first time disordered hyperuniformity has been observed in a biological system.
    Previously it had only been seen in physical systems like liquid helium and simple plasmas.
    For chicken eyes, the researchers speculate this cone arrangement allows the birds to evenly sample incoming light

    WEIRD PHYSICS EXPERIMENT TO DEMONSTRATE REVERSE CAUSALITY, OR ENTANGLEMENT, OR SPOOKY ACTION AT A DISTANCE

    By Alan Boyle, Science Editor - NBC News

    Since 2007, University of Washington physicist John Cramer has been working with lasers and mirrors to conduct experiments aimed at demonstrating whether causality can appear to go backward in time, as observed in a specific reference frame.

    A physicist who has been looking for evidence that causality can go backward in time says he's making progress on nailing down the theoretical foundations for such quantum weirdness.  For years, the University of Washington's John Cramer has been trying to set up an experimental apparatus that would demonstrate what's known as "quantum nonlocal communication" — a characteristic of quantum mechanics that implies what you do to one entangled particle could affect what happens to a different particle earlier in time.

    When Cramer started working on the crowdfunded experiment in 2007, he expected either to find evidence of such retrocausality — which would blow our minds — or to find out that subtle quantum effects kept spoiling the experiment.  So far, Cramer's own experiments have played out according to the latter, less exciting scenario. But the physicist says he's been having "very fruitful discussions" with Anton Zeilinger and his colleagues at the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information in Vienna. Like Cramer, Zeilinger is a pioneer in the study of quantum physics' spooky implications, including retrocausality.

    "I learned a lot," Cramer told NBC News in an email. "Result: After returning to Seattle, I was able to develop quantum mechanical calculations that reproduce the unpublished data of Zeilinger's group in testing an entangled photon setup similar to mine. These quantum calculations also point to a way of implementing nonlocal signaling."  Cramer said the new scheme differs significantly from his previous experimental setups and needs to be tested. "I'm presently working on generating funding for that test," he wrote.
