Soon after the devastating tsunami struck Japan's east coast in March of 2011, the US Navy aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan showed up to provide humanitarian aid. It may have exposed those on board to toxic levels of radiation. Here, sailors scrub down the flight deck to clean the ship of radiation on March 23, 2011.

Steve Simmons was honorably discharged from the Navy for medical reasons last June. His complaints began about a year after he returned from Japan when his muscles began to fail and his hair began falling out by the handful. Four years ago, he competed in triathlons and hiked in the mountains. Now, he can no longer walk -- and nobody can tell him why.

NATURE TAKING OVER RADIOACTIVE FUKUSHIMA EXCLUSION ZONE

ONCE pristine rice paddies overgrown into forests. Wild animals roaming the streets of eerie towns with an uncertain future.

That’s the scene described by Australian teacher Jessica Hellamy who recently had the chance to see inside the 20km exclusion zone created after the nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Dai’ichi powerplant in 2011.

“Time had stopped. In the main part of the town the buildings are still collapsed from the earthquake. It’s kind of nuts. It was weird, like a time warp, everything is all overgrown,” she said.  “All of the rice fields are covered in forest and wild animals.”

She said the day of the earthquake schools were due to hold graduation ceremonies, with many of the preparations for celebrations still intact.

“They literally evacuated that day and were told they had to get out of town completely and since then they haven’t been able to go back,” she said.

“The kids themselves haven’t been back, adults have gone back on a daily pass to clear their house. Anyone that’s under 15 isn’t able to go on. So it’s pretty tough on them.”

It’s been nearly four years since the magnitude 9 earthquake struck 130 kilometres off Japan’s coast at 2.46pm in March 2011 triggering a tsunami that killed nearly 19,000 people and moved the entire country to the east.
Tsunami waves hit the coast of Minamisoma in Fukushima prefecture following massive earth
Quake and tsunami hit Fukushima Prefecture
While the earthquake itself and freak tsunami were devastating, it was events at Fukushima Dai’ichi powerplant that turned the city into a time warp and forced an estimated 160,000 people from their homes.

The disaster disrupted power supply and cooling to nuclear reactors at the plant, leading three of them to melt down within days. A fourth was also written off due to damage, the World Nuclear Association reports, causing the world’s worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

Since then, 160,000 people have been forced from their homes after Japan’s environment ministry labelled 11 municipalities “no-go zones”. They’ve been forced to live in temporary housing while authorities painstakingly decontaminate the area in order for them to return home.

NEW PERMANENT GARBAGE ISLANDS ON THE PACIFIC OCEAN - Made out of Japanese tsunami debris - They surround the older Great Pacific Garbage Patch and have developed their own ecosystems.

Bouy Island, where the team say an underwater ecosystem is developing around the tsunami waste.
Buoy Island developing its own ecosystem
It captured the world's attention when a huge 'garbage island' was spotted in the middle of the Pacific.

Now,researchers have returned to the area known as the 'Great Pacific Garbage Patch' - and say it is getting worse.  Researchers are spending 30 days living on a boat in the area, and have even taken a drone to capture images from the sky.

'Our research crew is currently living in one of the most polluted areas of the world,' the team at Algalita, founded by Charles Moore, who first discovered the problem, said.  'This place, 1,000 miles away from land, redefined Algalita’s mission and ignited a fire to study the plastic plague destroying our oceans.  This is the North Pacific Gyre, home of the swirling vortex of plastic trash.  The persistence and increasing quantity of plastic debris has created new habitats—essentially 'plastic reefs' that sea creatures have made their homes', the team say.

They plan to take plastic debris samples from the same stations we sampled in 1999, 2008 and 2009.  'The ultimate goal is to evaluate long-term trends and changes in the Gyre by merging the data from previous expeditions with new data,' they say.  The team has already found that there may be more trash on the ocean surface than previously thought.

2014 study in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that the ocean's plastic may be mysteriously disappearing, with much less debris in the water than had been predicted, based on the global rates of plastic production and disposal. On his current trip, Moore did a similar 4.5-mile (7.2 kilometer) trawl of the ocean, but also used drones to assess the extent of trash from above.

The sample from the one hour trawl produced an alarming amount of plastics.   Captain Moore said 'this is extremely disturbing to me that 260 miles from the center of the gyre we pull a sample that appears to be a thousands of times more plastic by weight than plankton.  This is worse than the samples I was getting five years ago out in the center of the garbage patch, and we’re still on the periphery.  We found 100 times more plastic by weight with the drone, than we estimated from the trawl,' Moore told Livescience

They also say debris from the Japanese 2011 Tsunami is created its own 'mini islands'.  The team has already found one, dubbed 'Buoy Island', that they believe weights 7 tons.

CAT LOST SINCE JAPAN'S TSUNAMI IS REUNITED WITH HIS FAMILY

Suika with family - Photo Asahi Shimbun
A cat that vanished three years ago during Japan’s 2011 tsunami disaster has been unexpectedly reunited with his owners.   The black cat, called Suika, was thought to have died after disappearing on March 11, 2011 – the day of the earthquake and tsunami – from his home in Ofunato, Iwate prefecture.

Kazuko and Takeo Yamagishi, his owners, spent three months searching for the cat across the city, which was badly hit by the tsunami, before abandoning any hope that she may have survived the disaster.

DISCREDITED UNITED NATIONS ADVOCATES FOR MORE NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS - But the UN is not interested or capable of helping mitigate the ongoing ecocide caused by Fukushima

The world must adopt nuclear power to beat global warming, scientists say in major UN report by their Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
    • Governments need to ditch fossil fuels, like coal and oil, says UN report
    • Instead, they must adopt nuclear energy sources to beat global warming
    • Total investment in 'large-scale changes' will be around £300billion a year
    • MPs warn spending on renewable energy could also raise living costs

FUKUSHIMA WORKERS PROTEST LOW PAY AND DANGEROUS CONDITIONS - BUT JAPAN FOUND $200 MILLION TO GIVE TO THE PALESTINIANS

Workers who helped to clean up the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant rallied outside the headquarters of operator Tepco on Friday, protesting that they were forced to work for low pay in dangerous conditions.

Among a group of about 100 demonstrators, some said that contractors were hired to find cheap laborers who could easily be fired, AFP reports.

“Workers at the Fukushima plant have been forced to do unreasonable tasks. They tend to make easy mistakes under the pressure, but it’s not they who are at fault – it’s the conditions that force them to do terrible tasks,” one man, who did not want to give his name, told AFP.

Demonstrators also rallied outside Maeda Corp on Friday, one of the contractors hired to clean up the plant and surrounding areas.

In the web of confusing contractors and subcontractors who have worked at Fukushima, many are concerned at the working conditions people are subjected to.

JAPAN GETTING READY FOR ITS OWN NUCLEAR ARSENAL IN A MATTER OF MONTHS

Background - Article from April 2012 already exposed this fact:

JAPAN'S NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS WERE USED TO ACCUMULATE PLUTONIUM FOR BOMBS -   THE U.S. CIRCUMVENTED LAWS TO HELP THEM
In the wake of the disastrous U.S. agreement with Iran that allows that country to enrich uranium for the construction of nuclear bombs, here is how the U.S. helped Japan obtain plutonium from nuclear power plants for the construction of a nuclear weapons arsenal - a project that eventually resulted in the Fukushima catastrophe.

    March 2014, by CNBC:

Japan Has Nuclear 'Bomb in the Basement,'
    and China Isn't Happy

CNBC - No nation has suffered more in the nuclear age than Japan, where atomic bombs flattened two cities in World War II and three reactors melted down at Fukushima just three years ago.

But government officials and proliferation experts say Japan is happy to let neighbors like China and North Korea believe it is part of the nuclear club, because it has a "bomb in the basement" -– the material and the means to produce nuclear weapons within six months, according to some estimates. And with tensions rising in the region, China's belief in the "bomb in the basement" is strong enough that it has demanded Japan get rid of its massive stockpile of plutonium and drop plans to open a new breeder reactor this fall.

Japan signed the international Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which bans it from developing nuclear weapons, more than 40 years ago. But according to a senior Japanese government official deeply involved in the country's nuclear energy program, Japan has been able to build nuclear weapons ever since it launched a plutonium breeder reactor and a uranium enrichment plant 30 years ago.

JAPAN PLEDGES 200 MILLION FOR THE PALESTINIANS - THE POORLY TREATED AND BADLY PAID FUKUSHIMA CLEANUP CREW MUST BE THRILLED

Japan pledged more than $200 million in aid Saturday to help the Palestinian Authority, as representatives from 22 nations reiterated their support of the Palestinians' quest for their own state.

The pledge was announced by Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida at the second Conference on Cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development, held in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta.

Kishida said the first disbursement of the aid — about $62 million — was expected later this month.

DOLPHIN ACTIVIST AND "THE COVE" FILM MAKER MARTYN STEWART DETAINED AT JAPAN AIRPORT AND ACCUSED OF ECO-TERRORISM - THEN DEPORTED

BBC filmmaker Martyn Stewart who documents the bloody dolphin hunts in Taiji ("The Cove") was locked up at Osaka airport  accused of being an ‘eco-terrorist’.

Stewart, who films documentaries about the dolphin hunts in Taiji, said his conditions and the way he has been treated was ‘nothing short of criminal’.  He posted on his Facebook account: “I am locked in a cell room at Osaka airport waiting on an appeal to the high minister regarding my entry into Japan.   I’m accused of being sea shepherd and an eco terrorist. My footage is not liked in Japan apparently and have been accused of assaulting members of the public.  In 4 years of being here for the dolphins I have maintained the law and abided by their rules. My words and pictures did the rest. The government of Japan will do anything to protect the rights of the fishermen of Taiji and the barbaric treatment of the animals involved.  Please share far and wide to bring awareness to this corrupt government and those that want to continue to brutally treat these amazing animals.”

Stewart has visited Japan several times to film the dolphin hunts in Taiji where hundreds of animals are wrestled into nets. Some are killed for meat, others are trapped and sold to aquariums.  Japanese fisherman say the annual hunt is part of their culture.

Writing on his blog last year, he said: “What I learnt from these visits was that we (westerners) cannot stop this war on the oceans. Japan and most of its people have to end this and in some way, make them believe it was their idea. Pressure from outsiders only gets their goat and they become stubborn. I got the impression that if you tell the fishermen to end this atrocity, they tried harder to kill. They are now actually being blasé about the capturing and killing. Yes, tarpaulin is still being used heavily but they are not as vigilant in stopping people from seeing the odd dead dolphin or tail draped outside of the boats that carry the corpses to the butcher house anymore.”

HEARTBREAKING SLAUGHTER OF WHALES AND DOLPHINS BY JAPANESE FISHERMEN - THEN THEY RAM ACTIVISTS' VESSEL

Sea Shepherd claims the collision was deliberate and part of a sustained attack by three whaling ships on the protestors.  In Sunday's attack, which continued until 9am, the harpoon vessels overtook the Sea Shepherd ships, crossing their bows and coming within three to five metres in numerous "dangerous manoeuvres", Sea Shepherd claimed.

It said the Yushin Maru 3 struck the Bob Barker and quoted the ship's captain, Peter Hammarstedt, and  Siddarth Chakravarty of the Steve Irwin saying the two ships on several occasions had to steer out of the harpoon whalers' paths, narrowly avoiding potential collisions.  "The whaling vessels also made consecutive attempts to foul the propellers of the Sea Shepherd ships by dragging steel cable across the bow of the conservation ships."

DOLPHIN MOTHER COMMITS SUICIDE AFTER BEING SEPARATED FROM CALF BY JAPANESE FISHERMEN ENGAGED IN MASS MURDER OF DOLPHINS

DID MOTHER OF PRIZED ALBINO DOLPHIN COMMIT SUICIDE AFTER BEING TORN FROM ITS CALF?

DAILY MAIL -  Marine experts claim mammal deliberately stopped breathing after Japanese fishermen separated pod in notorious killing cove.

Anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd said the distressed dolphin went under and failed to resurface with the rest of the pod after its calf was taken. Ric O' Barry, a former dolphin trainer who founded the Dolphin Project, believes the mother decided not to breathe anymore as a result of the ordeal. He said: 'People don't believe me, but dolphins do it all the time. Captivity is extremely stressful and there is nothing more stressful to a dolphin than taking away its calf.' Japanese fishermen have now finished killing some of the 250 dolphins trapped recently in what activists say was the biggest round-up they have witnessed in the last four years.

Experts say dolphins have been known to commit suicide in captivity after becoming distressed and confused at their conditions.

NEW VOLCANIC ISLAND IS BORN - SHAPED LIKE A SNOOPY CARTOON

Snoopy island! Volcanic eruption forms new land mass that resembles famous cartoon dog - complete with collar

Japan has a new mascot - in the shape of a newly-formed volcanic island in the likeness of cartoon dog Snoopy.

The island, off the country's Pacific coast, rose from the sea over the past few weeks as a massive undersea volcano erupted and spewed out magma which cooled to create the new land mass.

By Christmas Eve, the island 620 miles south of Tokyo had expanded and it has now linked with existing Nishinoshima island.

After aerial photographs of the two islands were released, Twitter users pointed out how much they resembled Charlie Brown's faithful companion.  The likeness to Charles M. Schulz's creation is realised even further as a pool of reddish seawater, in between the two islands, looks like Snoopy's collar.

The Guardian reports experts say the volcano is still active and there is the possibility it will continue to change shape as the magma continues to rise.

JAPAN CREATES ARTIFICIAL WOMB - WHILE FUKUSHIMA'S HEAVY RADIATION CONTINUES TO SPILL OVER LAND, AIR AND OCEAN

In Tokyo, researchers have developed a technique called EUFI — extrauterine fetal incubation. They have taken goat fetuses, threaded catheters through the large vessels in the umbilical cord and supplied the fetuses with oxygenated blood while suspending them in incubators that contain artificial amniotic fluid heated to body temperature.

Yoshinori Kuwabara, chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Juntendo University in Tokyo, has been working on artificial placentas for a decade. His interest grew out of his clinical experience with premature infants, and as he writes in a recent abstract, ”It goes without saying that the ideal situation for the immature fetus is growth within the normal environment of the maternal organism.”

Kuwabara and his associates have kept the goat fetuses in this environment for as long as three weeks. But the doctor’s team ran into problems with circulatory failure, along with many other technical difficulties. Pressed to speculate on the future, Kuwabara cautiously predicts that ”it should be possible to extend the length” and, ultimately, ”this can be applied to human beings.”

For a moment, as you contemplate those fetal goats, it may seem a short hop to the Central Hatchery of Aldous Huxley’s imagination. In fact, in recent decades, as medicine has focused on the beginning and end stages of pregnancy, the essential time inside the woman’s body has been reduced. We are, however, still a long way from connecting those two points, from creating a completely artificial gestation. But we are at a moment when the fetus, during its obligatory time in the womb, is no longer inaccessible, no longer locked away from medical interventions.

The future of human reproductive medicine lies along the speeding trajectories of several different technologies. There is neonatology, accomplishing its miracles at the too-abrupt end of gestation. There is fetal surgery, intervening dramatically during pregnancy to avert the anomalies that kill and cripple newborns. There is the technology of assisted reproduction, the in-vitro fertilization and gamete retrieval-and-transfer fireworks of the last 20 years. And then, inevitably, there is genetics. All these technologies are essentially new, and with them come ethical questions so potent that the very inventors of these miracles seem half-afraid of where we may be heading.

ALDOUS HUXLEY on Brave New World:  "One by one the eggs were transferred from their test-tubes to the larger containers; deftly the peritoneal lining was slit, the morula dropped into place, the saline solution poured . . . and already the bottle had passed on through an opening in the wall, slowly on into the Social Predestination Room."

US SAILORS EXPOSED TO DANGEROUS LEVELS OF FUKUSHIMA RADIATION

SUFFERED FROM SEVERE PHYSICAL & EMOTIONAL EFFECTS

Although sailors have launched a legal suit against Fukushima TEPCO for lying, their suit should also extend to the media for continuing to play down news about Fukushima, and to withhold information regarding the real extent of this nuclear disaster.

The media's main goal in the case of Fukushima and any other nuclear accident or mishap seems to be to parrot the nuclear industry version of events, and that of governments working in collusion with nuclear companies.

The mainstream media are failing on a grand scale to alert the public about the nuclear industry's high risks, and the devastating cost of dealing with nuclear waste - to say nothing of the catastrophe that would ensue if there was another major accident.

    IN THEIR OWN WORDS:

ENENEWS reports -  US Navy sailor: THEY HAD TO REMOVE THREE LAYERS OF SKIN OFF MY HANDS AND ARMS AFTER FUKUSHIMA EXPOSURE.

US Navy Quartermaster (retired) Maurice Enis, USS Ronald Reagan: I go in and they had to remove three layers of skin off my hands and arms. It wasn’t like back to back.

They would scrub off one layer then I would have to wash it off, this orange grit stuff that you use to get off paint and oil.

Then they would do it over and over again and check. And we’d start the process all over, so in my head I was just praying that the machine would stop beeping so I can get it over with.

Nobody told me at the time what was going on, everybody just told me just to stand and be quiet, not touch anybody or anything. It was almost as if I had the plague.  Finally the machine stopped beeping and they let me go.
