TRULY MAGICAL PICTURES OF LIGHTNING ACROSS AMERICAN LANDSCAPES AND CITIES

The spectacular photos capture nature at its most electrifying - as lighting bolts strike deserted hillsides, towering skyscrapers and famous landmarks across America.

The lightning, photographed by Scott Stulberg, was captured hitting different parts of the country - from the Grand Canyon to downtown Los Angeles.   It can be seen emerging from dark, stormy clouds, before striking the ground below in a streak of blinding light.

Mr Stulberg, 57, described the photo shoots as 'thrilling' - saying: 'No matter where I am, I always feel like a little kid again when I see lightning.'  His passion for lightning had inspired him to move to the state of Arizona, which has more than 600,000 lightning strikes a year.

    Don't miss this.

GEOLOGIST THEORIZES OKLAHOMA EARTHQUAKES CAUSED BY AQUIFERS AND WEATHER

There does seem to be general consensus that oil and gas activity is playing a role in the increased seismicity, but no one can say just how big a role.  One researcher, a Jean Antonides - a Tulsa geologist who works for the oil and gas industry, is now suggesting something else may be at work -- the weather and aquifers.

Is this a way of deviating attention away from suspicions over widespread fracking in Oklahoma?  Residents are skeptical.

It's been a shaky last week here in central Oklahoma, following on the heels of a shaky last year -- a record-breaking year, in fact.

According to the Oklahoma Geological Survey (OGS), there were more than 2,800 earthquakes in Oklahoma in 2013. That's twice the previous high, established in 2011.

The vast majority of the earthquakes aren't strong enough to be felt, much less cause any damage. However, enough are felt and do cause minor damage that more and more Oklahomans are clamoring for an explanation as to their cause.

Joe and Mary Reneau, who live near Prague, certainly have a passing interest. Their home was devastated in November 2011's 5.6 magnitude earthquake in Prague.  "Every corner of the house, every corner of every room was fractured," said Joe Reneau.  Since then, the couple has read everything they can about Oklahoma's earthquakes.  "I think we deserve to know what's causing this," Mary insisted.

Seismologists have been studying the quakes and have offered differing theories about what's happening. There does seem to be general consensus that oil and gas activity is playing a role in the increased seismicity, but no one can say just how big a role.

One researcher, a Tulsa geologist, is now suggesting something else may be at work -- the weather and aquifers.

"Where these quakes have occurred," explained Jean Antonides, "they all have occurred around these aquifers."  Aquifers are essentially underground reservoirs -- a body of permeable rock, through which water can pass easily. There are many in Oklahoma, and the amount of water they contain can be affected by both weather and human activity.

Antonides says his research shows that aquifers near the location of certain earthquakes had been depleted, through both drought and increased human demand, and then suddenly refilled, through intense and heavy rains.

"When you have rainfall amounts of six inches over a few day period," Antonides pointed out, "these rainfalls cover a thousand square miles -- that's a lot of weight."   That much new weight – potentially trillions of tons -- if it's along or across a fault, can be enough to cause an earthquake.  "If you change the weight, relative near surface, across that fault -- either reducing the weight on one side, loading up the other side or vice versa," Antonides explained, "that could be the trigger point."

Antonides' paper lays out evidence that this hydrologic loading could have triggered, not only the Prague earthquake, but last April's 4.3 magnitude quake in Luther, a 5.8 M quake in Virginia in 2011, and others. University of Oklahoma research seismologist Austin Holland says he may be right.  "I think, in some cases," Holland told us, "there's really strong evidence that hydrologic loads can trigger earthquakes."

Holland himself theorized the weight of the extra water in Edmond's rain-swollen Arcadia Lake last summer may have caused the earthquakes that rattled Edmond in the fall.  "I find it difficult to comprehend," said Joe Reneau.  The Reneaus don't claim to be experts, but, like many, they're convinced the quakes are somehow tied to increased oil and gas activity.  "And that this new theory about the aquifers," said Mary Reneau, "is just the oil and gas companies' way of diverting attention from them to something else.  A lot of us take offense at that," said Antonides.

Antonides does work for an oil and gas company -- New Dominion -- but says his theory is based on real science and real data.  "The key is putting everything out there, and looking at all the possibilities," Antonides insisted.  On that point, he and the Reneaus are in agreement.
"By putting it out there," said Joe Reneau, "all the other experts will have their opportunity to question it, examine it, and reach their own conclusions."

INTERACTIVE GLOBE SHOWS THE MOTION OF THE OCEAN CURRENTS

Very relevant these days, when ocean currents are bringing Fukushima nuclear radiation to the west coast of North America.  But there is really only one planetary ocean and radioactivity will eventually reach everywhere, and all marine animal populations.

The motion of our oceans revealed: Hypnotic interactive globe reveals our planet’s powerful sea currents in REAL TIME
    • Created by Tokyo-based Cameron Beccario, users can drag the globe to their desired location and click to zoom in
    • A region that looks calm at a first glance is seen as an active area of currents circling as the user moves closer in
    • It follows an interactive global wind map, also created by Mr Beccario. Studied together, they reveal just how unpredictable our planet’s weather system can be
Users can drag the globe to their desired location and click on the spot they want to find out an ocean current in all its grandeur.  The detail is incredible. A region that looks calm at first glance is seen as an active area of currents on closer inspection, using the mouse wheel to zoom in.  Fascinatingly, the globe gives viewers an insight into the five major ocean gyres, the large systems of rotating ocean currents, particularly those involved with large wind movements.

BEAUTIFUL VIDEO OF ELECTRIC-BLUE NOCTILUCENT CLOUDS OVER SCOTLAND

Noctilucent clouds are like a great "geophysical light bulb." They turn on every year in late spring.

It is summer in Antarctica now, and experiencing this noctilucent cloud event

As December unfolds, a vast bank of noctilucent clouds is blanketing Antarctica. It started on Nov. 20th as a tiny puff of electric-blue and quickly expanded to overlie nearly the entire continent.

So why do these clouds appear in the summer?

The answer has to do with wind patterns and the flow of humidity in our atmosphere.

Summer happens to be the time when the greatest number of water molecules are wafted up from the lower atmosphere to mix with "meteor smoke" at the edge of space. Ironically, summer is also the time when the upper atmosphere is coldest, allowing the ice crystals of NLCs to form.

In recent years NLCs have intensified and spread. When noctilucent clouds first appeared in the 19th century, you had to travel to polar regions to see them. Since the turn of the century, however, they have been sighted as close to the equator as Colorado and Utah.

Some researchers believe this is a sign of climate change. One of the greenhouse gases that has become more abundant in Earth's atmosphere since the 19th century is methane.

"When methane makes its way into the upper atmosphere, it is oxidized by a complex series of reactions to form water vapor," explains Hampton University Professor James Russell, the principal investigator of AIM. "This extra water vapor is then available to grow ice crystals for NLCs." If this idea, one of several, is correct, noctilucent clouds are a sort of "canary in a coal mine" for one of the most important greenhouse gases. And that, says Russell, is a great reason to study them.

    MYSTERY DUST COVERS SOUTHEAST TEXAS

We received hundreds of calls, emails, Facebook posts and tweets about your dirty cars on Sunday. Why were your cars dirty? A red dust was to blame, and we worked to track down the source and solve the mystery.

"It's very strange to see all this red dirt on the cars, and I've seen on many cars in front of me," said a resident while waiting in line at an area car wash.

Many folks tell us they woke up to find the mystery dust all over their cars this morning.

    SO, WHAT WAS IT?

ABC13 Meteorologist Travis Herzog went looking for answers to the mysterious dust, beginning by identifying the top three theories of what it could be.

The first theory is that it's cedar pollen that came in from the Texas Hill Country. The only problem with that is that the winds had not changed by the time you saw the dust on vehicles.
The second theory is that the dust blew in from West Texas. It does look like the sand and clay from there, but we had strong southwesterly winds over the past 24 hours until the front came through. Again, wrong direction.

The final theory is that it was mud showers from Mexico. And here's the clue that will likely crack this one wide open: a tweet was sent out by the National Weather Service in Brownsville just a few days ago. They noted a very large dust and sand cloud originating from Mexico, just south of the border.

The strong southwesterly winds we had Saturday could have transported the dust in this direction. And here's the kicker: most people say it looked like a dirty or rusty rain. The rain showers in the past 24 hours have all come from the southwest where that dust cloud was observed.

Of course, we couldn't be 100 percent sure unless we were to do a chemical analysis, but we believe we found the culprit: mud showers from Mexico.

Either way, it was certainly a car wash owner's dream.
