IT'S LEGAL TO TRAP AND DROWN OTTERS IN AMERICA - These cruel, murderous practicesare driven by greed

Unauthorized duplication of this blog's material is prohibited.   Excerpts and links may be used, provided that full credit and link is given to Otters and Science News Blogspot.  Link to this post:  http://ottersandsciencenews.blogspot.ca/2017/04/its-legal-to-trap-and-drown-otters-in.html - Thank you for visiting my blog.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • Driven by cruelty, sadism, and greed, trappers are murdering otters all across the country.
  • Otters are coveted for their pelts, and also regarded as competition by fishermen.
  • Trappers resort to extremely cruel methods of capturing these wonderful creatures and dooming them to slow, painful deaths.
  • Otters are good for the environment.  As they consume urchins, they allow for the growth of kelp forests, which in turn become habitat for many other ocean species.
  • Furry otters live along ocean coasts, but river otters (with smooth fur) make a living in both the ocean and the rivers.
  • They form close family units and are excellent and devoted parents.
Otters are known for being adorable and playful creatures who form tight social bonds — but what's less well known is how they are being killed.   Recreational trappers are targeting North American river otters, and most people probably don't even realize that this is still legal in many places across the country.
River otter caught in body-grip trap
Body-grip, leg-hold and foot-hold traps are used to catch many different kinds of wild animals who, once caught, can wait days before being found and killed. With otters the traps can be particularly terrifying, since trappers targeting otters sometimes set the devices underwater in what is called a "pocket set trap," so the otter caught in the device drowns as he tries to get free. This can last as long as eight agonizing minutes.
"Otters are most commonly trapped with Conibear traps — full-body traps that slam down on the animal but don't necessarily kill them, so that they experience drawn-out agony," Place said.  Other times, hunters set a cage trap right by an otter's home (usually a den abandoned by another animal, like beavers), and bait the animals with a piece of fish.
"Otter trapping is often justified on the basis of overpopulation or supposed damage to fish stocks, but the reality is that their fur is lucrative," Jennifer Place, trapping spokesperson for Born Free USA, told The Dodo.
    CELEBRATE OTTERS
    River otters can also live in the sea.  Here on the Vancouver Island coast we see so-called river otters swimming in the ocean all the time.  They just don't have that magnificent sea otter fur coat, but they are just as cute and intelligent.
     2016 News:  New California Sea Otter Census is out:  Good news
    For the first time, southern sea otters’ numbers have exceeded 3,090, which is the threshold that must be exceeded for three consecutive years in order for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to consider de-listing the species as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act.   However, localized population declines at the northern and southern ends of the range continue to be a cause for concern among resource management officials. Read more
    For a tiny animal, he clearly has a brave heart. The otter was pictured biting the croc's tail at the Jim Corbett National park in India before chasing him in circles. Despite the angry reptile's efforts to gobble him up, the otter proved elusive. Witness Raminder Singh said the otter 'certainly knew what he was doing'.
    Donna Dooley just wanted to see whether the ice on the Cameron River outside of Yellowknife had thawed when she, her daughter and her daughter's friend went to the Cameron Ramparts for a picnic on Easter Monday.
    "We had the campfire going and we were starting to cook bannock and smokies and had sat down by the campfire and my daughter said, "Oh my God! There goes an otter!"
    Dooley says she'd hung her camera on a tree branch and scrambled to get a shot as the animal disappeared over the bank. "I thought 'Oh that was so exciting but, aww... I just got a picture of its butt, oh well.'"
    But the show wasn't over.  Dooley says as they sat, looking out over the river, they saw three otters going in and out of a hole in the ice. Then they disappeared from sight.
    "Next thing I know, they were coming up the trail behind us and sliding down!" she says.
    For the next half hour, Dooley witnessed a group of otters running straight across the river ice and sliding down the hill into a hole.
    "They were peeking at us, running across the snow, in and out and down the trail… It was amazing!" she says. "They were having a good time."
    Sea otters are an endangered species, and their numbers are declining due to hunting by greedy fishermen and by pollution of their habitat.
    Otters are actually good for the environment, as they consume urchins.  Urchins devastate kelp forests, thus ruining the habitat for countless other marine species.  Wherever otters make it their home, aquatic life flourishes.
    A California resident heard it crying while walking near Coastways Beach and immediately called local animal control authorities. The next day, workers with the Monterey Bay Aquarium found her hungry and thin, weighing in at a mere two pounds.
    Upon arrival, Pup 681 (as she’s now called) was quickly given food and eventually transported to Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, where she was assigned a team of veterinarians and scientists who are working to teach this otter, well, how to be an otter. And that’s no easy task, by the way.
    They had to teach her how to float:
    ANTI-DEPRESANTS LEACHING INTO WATER SUPPLIES MAKE WILDLIFE SICK AND EVEN KILLS THEM - Otters with liver damage, starlings dying - Birth control pill ingredients causing severe hormonal disorders in fish
    Danger: Two commonly used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are causing severe liver damage to otters
    Are happy pills destroying our wildlife? Starlings dying. Otters with liver damage. Cuttlefish driven crazy. How anti-depressants leaching into water supplies are wreaking havoc.
  • Starlings lose interest in food and sex after being exposed to Prozac
  • And crayfish become more aggressive when exposed to the 'happy pills'
  • As many as one in six people in the UK take anti-depressants
  • While anti-inflammatory drugs are causing severe liver damage in otters
  • They are reckless, feckless, sexually useless and easy meat for predators. They are even at risk of liver damage.
    No, not a new generation of drink and drug-addled youths. This is the wildlife of Britain, creatures whose brains and bodies are being sent haywire by the torrents of antidepressants, contraceptive pills and painkillers that we flush with our urine into the waterways every year.
    The victims include starlings, otters, cuttlefish and crayfish. But scientists fear these animals represent only a few of the UK species being threatened by our pill-popping habits.
    HELPFUL OTTER RETRIEVES TOURIST'S SMARTPHONE FROM THE WATER
    A tech-savvy otter has been hailed a hero after retrieving an iPhone from a pool.
    Starsky, an Asian short-clawed otter, dived into action after a tourist dropped the Apple smartphone into the murky depths of a pool at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek, fearing it was lost forever.
    But the nine-year-old otter dived into the tank, hauled the brightly-coloured handset to the surface and calmly handed it to speechless animal care assistant Jenny Lewis.
    Starsky arrived at the sanctuary in January 2009, along with his brother Hutch.  His usual tricks include juggling stones and climbing up his enclosure - although he's normally too scared to come down by himself.
    IT'S SEA OTTER AWARENESS WEEK - SEPTEMBER 21 TO 27, 2014
    Sea Otter Awareness Week falls on the last week in September and is an annual recognition of the vital role that sea otters play in the nearshore ecosystem.
    Each year, zoos, aquariums, natural history museums, marine institutions, filmmakers, researchers, academics, educators, and the public participate in various events and activities highlighting sea otters and their natural history and the various conservation issues sea otters are faced with.
    List of events maybe at a place near you
    http://www.seaotterweek.org/#!about1/c1sc4
    BASIC FACTS ABOUT SEA OTTERS
    The heaviest members of the weasel family, sea otters are also the second smallest marine mammals. Unlike other marine mammals, they do not have a layer of blubber to help them keep warm. Instead, sea otters have the densest fur in the animal kingdom, ranging from 250,000 to a million hairs per square inch, which insulates them.
    Sea otters are good for the environment
    Sea otters are a keystone species, meaning their role in their environment has a greater effect than other species. As predators, sea otters are critical to maintaining the balance of the near-shore kelp ecosystems.
    Without sea otters, the undersea animals they prey on would devour the kelp forests off the coast that provide cover and food for many other marine animals. Additionally, sea otters indirectly help to reduce levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, a prevalent greenhouse gas, as kelp forests play an important role in capturing carbon in coastal ecosystems
    Diet
    Sea otters eat urchins, abalone, mussels, clams, crabs, snails and about 40 other marine species. Sea otters eat approximately 25% of their weight in food each day to support their high metabolism.
    Population
    Historically, sea otters numbered between several hundred thousand to more than a million. But due to the fur trade, worldwide numbers plummeted down to a total of 1,000-2,000 in the early 1900s. Today, there are estimated to be just over 106,000 worldwide, with just under 3,000 in California.
    Habitat & Range
    Sea otters live in shallow coastal waters off the northern Pacific. Their historic range stretched from Japan, along the coast of Siberia and the Aleutian Chain and down the Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and California coast to Baja California. Currently sea otters can be found in Canada, Russia, Japan, California and Washington, but the majority of all wild sea otters are found in Alaskan waters. Recent reports of sea otter sightings have also occurred in Mexico.
    In the U.S., there are two distinct sea otter subspecies, the Northern sea otter (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) and the Southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis). Northern sea otters are found in the Aleutian Islands, Southern Alaska, British Columbia, and Washington. Southern sea otters, also known as California sea otters, live in the waters along the California coastline and range from San Mateo County in the north to Santa Barbara County in the south.
    Behavior
    Sea otters spend much of their lives in the water and can dive up to 330 feet when foraging for food. They sometimes rest in coastal kelp forests, often draping the kelp over their bodies to keep from drifting away.
    Sea otters are also one of the few mammals other than primates known to use tools. They use small rocks or other objects to pry shellfish from rocks and to hammer them open.
    Reproduction
    Mating Season: Throughout the year
    Gestation: 6-8 months
    Litter Size: Generally one pup, but sea otters can give birth to twins
    PETITION TO STOP THE OUT OF CONTROL MURDER OF ANIMALS BY USDA'S WILDLIFE SERVICES, which killed 4 MILLION ANIMALS last year - NO EXPLANATION for the numbers, the methods used, or the reasons behind it - They included 528 river otters, 419 black bears, 973 red-tailed hawks
    By , Washington Post
    North Am. River Otters - Wikipedia photo
    The massive toll of wild animals exterminated by the federal government as a service to everything from airports to ranches was up again last year.
    The more than 4 million animals shot, poisoned, snared or trapped by the Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services in fiscal year 2013 included:
    75,326 coyotes, 866 bobcats, 528 river otters, 3,700 foxes, 12,186 prairie dogs, 973 red-tailed hawks, and 419 black bears.
    Though there’s a list of animals killed, there’s little data showing the cause for each killing, the methods used and the reasons behind mistakes that lead to massive kills of animals that aren’t targeted.
    AWESOME OTTERS - THEY PLAY MUSIC ON THE KEYBOARD AND THEY LOVE IT - These intelligent creatures in captivity were given the instrument to enrich their environment
    Smithsonian Zoo Otters -  Huffington Post
    They would much rather be playing in freedom in the wild, but that's life.  Otters love to have fun, even in captivity.  They take things as they come and make the best of it.
    Huffington Post - Otters don't have to be the most musically talented sea creatures out there; they just have to be ridiculously cute.   In their 32-second musical debut, a cage of Asian small-clawed otters at Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, D.C., attempt to master the keyboard.
    According to the zoo's YouTube channel, the otters were given the choice of playing on the keyboard or just sitting back and enjoying the show. Either way, this is absolutely adorable.  As part of the zoo's #ZooEnrichment program, animals are taught to play with their creative sides, engaging in activities that challenge their sight, touch and hearing senses.
    Earlier today, the zoo posted another video of Bonnie the orangutan playing the xylophone like a pro — seriously, she's probably better than most human xylophone players.  Animal enrichment is also used to provide stimulating environments for animals to demonstrate their species' typical behaviour. And as cool as it may be to see zoo animals doing very "human things," all of these activities are meant to enhance their well-being.
    Watch video and listen to them play
    THE ENSLAVED OTTERS OF BANGLADESH - USED TO CHASE FISH INTO NETS
    Free-spirited and highly intelligent otters enslaved and made to work for humans.
    Bangladeshi tradition involves harnessing mammals up like reindeer as they chase fish into nets
