For the 2017 competition - the largest in the world photographers from across the planet entered a record 227,596 images across the awards' Professional, Open and Youth categories.   In all, 49 countries participated.  Here are some of the most beautiful entries.

George Stoyle captured the moment a school of fish took refuge in the tentacles of a Lion's mane jellyfish off the coast of Scotland. The picture, entitled 'Hitchhikers', was the winner of the Coast and Marine category and the BWPA overall winner

    You thought they were all cute and adorable, until you saw this penguin:
    Snack attack: A member of National Geographic's Your Shot community captured this photo with a GoPro on Antarctica's sea ice. 'I studied the movements of the penguins for weeks,' Berry writes. 'They walked in the same area almost every day. We would get maybe a dozen or less going by. The day this was taken there were over 60 penguins. It was a bit of luck involved too.'

    Electric: Calbuco Volcano is located in the lakes region south of Santiago, Chile's capital city and is one of the 10 most dangerous volcanoes in the country. On April 23, after more than 40 years of inactivity, the volcano erupted, spewing more than 200 million tons of ash and causing the evacuation of more than 2,000 people.     PHOTOGRAPHS CAPTURE STUNNING IMAGES OF LIFE for the Society of Biology's contest

  • The images are part of the shortlist for the Society of Biology's Photographer of the Year award
  • There are nine photos taken by adults competing for a £1,000 prize run by the London-based society
  • There were more than 800 entries, with photographs allowed to focus on anything in biology

  • The shortlist for the Society of Biology’s Photographer of the Year reveal has been revealed - and it includes a stunning array of images from across the natural world. The theme of this year’s competition was Home, Habitat and Shelter and the shortlisted entries include a  a sea turtle eating a jellyfish (pictured)
