MARYLAND 'SPORTS' FISHERMEN ENGAGE IN SADISTIC HARPOONING AND BEATING UP OF DEFENSELESS PREGNANT RAYS FOR A CONTEST. - Then they let them and their babies suffocate and die a slow and painful death. - After being weighed for the contest, they are dumped into the water. - The one who has the heaviest harvest of dead mother rays and babies wins

Cownose ray swimming in open ocean
The killing is not even for food.  It's for winning a contest and the fun of sadistically killing intelligent and defenseless creatures.  All this is LEGAL and it happens in civilized Maryland, United States of America.  Please contact Maryland authorities.
  • It's just an excuse for a blood fest.
  • They shoot them with harpoons, they pull them up, they beat them with a metal baseball bat, they throw them in a barrel and let them suffocate.
  • They are dumped on the blood-soaked decks of small boats and stuffed into buckets where they can be seen writhing in agony.
  • They die slow and painful deaths.
  • As they are dying, they sometimes give birth as a last chance to get their babies out, who are also killed.
  • Mostly the fishermen force the babies into their mothers' bodies to increase the weight of the catch.
  • After being weighed in, the dead creatures and their babies are thrown into the water.  All this is LEGAL in Maryland.
Ray killing in Chesapeake Bay
Every year, groups of cownose rays swim up from Florida to the Chesapeake Bay to give birth — and the vision of the animals is truly awe-inspiring.

"Cownose rays glide peacefully below the water's surface like so many kites against the sky, adding to the beauty and mystery that draws people to the ocean," Jeff Pierce, legislative counsel for the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), told The Dodo in a statement.   "Researchers have shown that these rays are actually very intelligent, that they have preferences and ideas of their own."

Cownose ray, ventral view

But in recent years, some of these magnificent rays have met the cruelest fate.

Fishermen were filmed taking part in a 'brutal' tournament that involved killing basking rays with 'bowhunting' weapons

The gentle rays were left to die slow and painful deaths after being harpooned

Hunters, armed with bows and arrows, board boats and shoot the rays in the water — all for a contest called the Battle of the Rays. Those who don't die instantly are clubbed in the head.

Because the contest takes place in birthing season, most of the rays killed are pregnant and about to give birth. Cownose rays carry just one baby at a time, so there are concerns about the impacts on the ray population. Not only that, the sheer violence of the contest seems needlessly cruel, according to witnesses.

WHAT IS THAT MYSTERIOUS ALIEN METALIC SOUND COMING FROM THE MARIANA TRENCH, the ocean's deepest place, 36,000 feet down? It is so weird, it can't be an animal call

MARIANA TRENCH ANIMAL
Listen to the mysterious 'alien song' heard deep in the Mariana trench: Researchers reveal unexplained sound heard 36,000 feet down - That is 10,058 meters, or 10 kilometers, or 6.25 miles deep.
  • The Mariana Trench is the deepest place in the world's oceans
  • Scientists sent a hydrophone down to Challenger Deep, the deepest part
  • Strange booming is unidentified - but it could be an animal call
MARIANA TRENCH ANIMALS
Researchers have released audio of a strange booming sound heard in the the deepest part of the ocean.    Scientists at OSU's Hatfield Marine Science Center named it the 'Western Pacific Biotwang' and say their best guess is that it is a new type of previously unheard whale call.

Lasting between 2.5 and 3.5 seconds, the five-part call includes deep moans at frequencies as low as 38 hertz and a metallic finale that pushes as high as 8,000 hertz.

'It's very distinct, with all these crazy parts,' said Sharon Nieukirk, senior faculty research assistant in marine bioacoustics at Oregon State.   'The low-frequency moaning part is typical of baleen whales, and it's that kind of twangy sound that makes it really unique.   We don't find many new baleen whale calls.'

    SEA SLUGS:

Most of these “slugs” are actually snails that have lost their shells and gained new characteristics through evolution. For example, sacoglossans are sometimes called “solar-powered sea slugs” because they use chloroplasts from the algae they eat in their own tissue.
    leaf-sheep-sea-slug-costasiella-kuroshimae-6
    Sea Sheep - Costasiella Kuroshimae

It’s a sheep! It’s a cow! No, it’s Costasiella kuroshimae (or ‘Leaf Sheep’ for short). This adorable little sea slug, whose beady eyes and cute feelers make it look like a cartoon sheep, feeds on algae – just like the real thing!

What’s fascinating about the tiny ‘leaf sheep,’ which can grow up to 5mm in length and can be found near Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines, is that they are one of the only animals in the world that can perform photosynthesis (the others all belong to the sacoglossa sea slug clade).

When they eat algae, they suck out the chloroplasts and incorporate them into their own bodies in a process called kleptoplasty. This process, which otherwise can only be performed by single-celled organisms, essentially makes them solar-powered slugs!

See more Sea Sheep at the bottom of this page.

And here meet the Sea Bunny:

Jorunna parva, a sea slug that looks like a fluffy bunny.

This tiny sea slug’s bunny ears are actually rhinophores, or chemosensory scent/taste organs that help them detect chemicals in the water and make their way across the ocean floor. They can be found from the Indian Ocean to the Philippines to Japan, where photos of them have become popular.

'Humane': A majority of seals are killed with clubs or a ‘hakapik’ to the head in order to avoid damaging the pelt

Return to Canada's killing fields: Government gives green light for almost HALF A MILLION seals to be killed for their fur in annual cull - and vast majority will be pups who die by a club or ice pick to the head
Why: The seals are mainly killed for their pelts, but hunters also sell their blubber and the penises, which are a popular ingredient in aphrodisiacs in Asia
  • Canadian seal hunt is the largest marine mammal cull on the planet
  • Scientists have proved that seals are often skinned while still alive and sensitive to pain
  • The 2015 quota given to hunters by the government is 468,000 seals
  • Mainly killed for their furs, but also to make seal oil and aphrodisiacs
  • Hunt quota has been over 400,000 for years, despite decline in market
  • Bans on import of seal pelts has lead to complete collapse in sales

  • Drifting on the surface of the ocean, jellyfish-like creatures called Portuguese man o' war are feared by swimmers and surfers because of their painful stings. They glow because of a natural phenomenon called bioluminescence
Feared by swimmers because of its painful sting

While some fish use their light to lure prey, it’s thought that jellyfish and siphonophores glow as a defence against predators and in the bluebottle’s case, draw attention to its venomous tentacles
