The Empress Hotel is an icon in the city of Victoria, British Columbia.  Large and luxurious, it sits by the beautiful harbor that is also home to flocks of seagulls.  This hilarious true story with its cascading sequence of disastrous events sounds like something out of a movie.  Visualize it and laugh out loud.

Lifetime ban from Empress for pepperoni seagull fiasco has been lifted

By / Times Colonist

A Nova Scotia man has  received a "pardon" from the Fairmont Empress for his lifetime ban from the iconic Victoria hotel after he inadvertently trashed one of their rooms with a pack of pepperoni and a flock of seagulls.

It all happened 17 years ago when Nick Burchill booked a room at the Empress for a work conference. Burchill was also in the Canadian Naval Reserve and his Navy buddies asked that he bring some Brother’s pepperoni, a Halifax delicacy.

Because this was the Navy we were talking about, I brought enough for a ship,” Burchill wrote in a March 28 Facebook post about the ordeal, which has gone viral.

Animals sense upcoming catastrophes and this very intelligent hawk, perhaps with some physical injury, thought the best way to hunker  down during Hurricane Harvey was in a cozy place, such as William Brusso's taxi cab, and then his home.  Brusso is an animal lover, so this bird may have sensed he was the kind of person to ask for help.
William Bruso filmed the moment a hawk wouldn't budge from his taxi cab as Hurricane Harvey barreled towards Houston, Texas on Friday

Take cover! The moment a hawk flew into a taxi and refused to get out as hurricane Harvey barreled towards Texas

  • William Bruso was buying food before Hurricane Harvey hit Houston on Friday
  • He returned to his taxi cab and a hawk jumped into the passenger seat
  • Bruso said the bird looked scared with its wings tucked close to its side
  • The man filmed the strange interaction and posted the video to Facebook
  • Bruso named the animal Harvey the Hurricane Hawk and kept it at his home
  • The Houston man handed the bird over to Texas Wildlife Rescue Center Saturday

  • A man filmed the moment a hawk wouldn't budge from his taxi cab as Hurricane Harvey barreled towards Texas.  As thousands evacuated the Houston area ahead of the Category 4 hurricane and others hunkered down, one hawk sought refuge in a car in Houston on Friday.

    BIRDS OF ALL FEATHERS JOIN FORCES WHEN WATCHING OUT FOR DEADLY ARMY ANTS

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    When army ants move out, a new study found that, instead of chasing each other away, birds work together to follow the column and hunt the insects that marching ants scare out of hiding.
     Ruddy woodcreeper,
    a bivouac-checking species
    • Finding that birds largely work together to forage at army ant raids seems to demonstrate that cooperation is a better survival strategy than trying to keep food from the raids for their own species.
    • In watching for the raids and the flocks that "attend" them, a key to avian cooperation may be what are termed "bivouac-checking" birds.
    • These are birds that perch near the sites where army ants make their nests (bivouacs) and watch to see where and when the ants move.
    • So when bivouac-checking birds see the movement of the columns and take off, other birds take the cue. They either know birds like the ocellated antbird follow ant columns or recognize vocalizations the specialized birds make when chasing the colonies.
    • Birds may use each other as a way of finding army ant raids, which are very hard to locate in the forest because they are widely spaced and the ants are mobile.
    Army ants scare up a lot of food when they're on the move, which makes following them valuable for predator birds. But instead of competing and chasing each other off from the ant "raids," as scientists had thought, birds actually give each other a heads up when the ants are marching, according to a new Drexel University study.
    STUDY: CARTOONS ARE MORE EFFECTIVE THAN PHOTOS IN PERSUADING THE PUBLIC - Global warming advocates hope to use cartoons to manipulate the public with discredited arguments
    ©http://ottersandsciencenews.blogspot.ca/. Unauthorized duplication of this blog's material is prohibited.   Excerpts and links may be used, provided that full credit and link is given to Otters and Science News Blogspot.  Link to this post:  http://ottersandsciencenews.blogspot.ca/2017/05/study-cartoons-are-more-effective-than.html - Thank you for visiting my blog.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    • This blog loves good political cartoons.  A scientific study found that they are more persuasive than photos in helping you understand a point of view and make up your mind.
    • The reason is that a good political cartoon, such as the dozens published regularly here on  THE NEWS IN CARTOONS  can powerfully summarize in a single image a message that a photograph alone cannot.
    • A cartoon more than a photo will go straight to our heart and our mind.   And then there is the irresistible element of good quality humor, which we love.
    • Of course this is a communication method that can be used for good or for evil.  The National Socialist Party of Germany - AKA Nazis - used cartoons to incite racial hatred and violence.
    • On the other side of the pond American cartoonists availed themselves of cartoons to inspire patriotism and the need to fight tyranny and genocide in Europe.
    • Leftist ideologues desperate to persuade the increasingly skeptical public about global warming and climate change were the instigators of this study.
    • A cartoon can become a medium for flawed or misleading scientific messages such as many of those advocated by the left.  Leftists defend wind farms in spite of the fact that they kill millions of birds and make people who live in the vicinity very sick.
    • The same environmentalists have remained completely silent at the scourge of nuclear power plants, although nuclear waste and nuclear meltdowns are more dangerous to life on the planet than anything climate change may do in the next thousand years.
    • In the end, all is fair in love and war.  It is up to us to be skeptical of what the media are selling.

    The left wants to learn more about mind manipulation through cartoons

    SCIENCE DAILY - If you're creating a message to educate, inform, or persuade, don't underestimate the power of a well-executed cartoon. A new study suggests if you're trying to convince the public to change their stance on a topic, you may be more successful if you use a cartoon rather than a photograph.   Source:  University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES).

    "Photographs were shown to be more credible, but cartoons were more likely to change behavior," says U of I agricultural communications professor Lulu Rodriguez who led the study.  "    Participants in the study said the content was better in the cartoon brochures (even though the text was identical), but the credibility was lower than the brochures using photographs.

    A cartoon grabs people's attention long enough to deliver the message. That's what you need in today's message-heavy atmosphere. Why not use a tool that has proven ability to cut through the others and inform people in a way that actually works?"   "It may be because of the more light-hearted approach of cartoons," Rodriquez says.

    When you’re in trouble, call the police. It’s something we’re all taught since childhood, but it seems even animals know to seek out the boys in blue when danger approaches.

    Officer James Givens was on patrol in a parking lot when a distressed goose approached him and wouldn’t leave him alone.

    “This goose came up and started pecking on the side of the car,” Givens told The Dodo.

    “I threw some food out for her, but she didn’t take it. She just kept pecking and quacking.” The goose kept looking at Givens so he decided to follow her.

    “She led me about 100 yards away to this grassy area near a creek. That’s when I saw one of her babies all tangled up in some string from a balloon. His little feet were kicking,” said Givens. “She led me straight to him.”
    goose-asks-help-police-4
    Givens’s colleague officer Cecilia Charron, from the Cincinnati Police Department, volunteered to help with the trapped gosling and untangled the baby.

    “The mother goose just watched, like she knew,” said Givens. Once free, the gosling was reunited with his mother.
    The string was tied to a Mother’s Day balloon among some of the litter near Mill Creek.

    Givens shot video on his cellphone. He and Specialist Cecilia Charron called the SPCA, but no one was immediately available to come out. So Charron took matters into her own hands.

    The expression "You look like SH-T this morning" may be a compliment to the survival instinct of caterpillars, as it significantly improves their chances of making it to the moth stage.
  • Caterpillars of Japanese moths contort their black and white bodies at rest
  • These postures make them look like bird droppings on a branch or leaf
  • Researchers found that birds actively avoid caterpillars that do this
  • Scientists found the disguise can increase triple their chances of survival
  • Although this might look like a bird dropping dangling delicately from a leaf, it is actually the caterpillar of a moth called Apochima juglansiaria. Its black and white colouring makes it stand out but researchers found that by bending its body while resting on the leaf, birds tend to be tricked into thinking it is a dropping

    Smile for the camera! Bird called the Tawny frogmouth grins for his close up from his perch.

  • Bizarre-looking bird was spotted in Queensland on Australia's east coast
  • Nocturnal animal was perched on a branch next to two fellow frogmouths
  • The amateur photographer was amazed by creature's startled-looking smile
  • Birds often camoflauged in golden shower trees, known as Cassia Fistula

  • Smile for the camera! A Tawny frogmouth beams as its picture is taken in Queensland, eastern Australia

    It may not have the sweetest-sounding name - but apparently this Tawny frogmouth still has plenty to smile about.

    Ravens have to live with this behavior all the time. When the top-dog birds see others building new relationships, they attack these birds or put themselves in the middle. They may as well be spreading rumors or defacing each other’s lockers.

    Wild ravens living in Austria were the ones to reveal this behavior to scientists. The ravens, a group of about 300 birds in the Austrian Alps, have discovered that a local zoo is a convenient source of food.

    So the wild birds hang around the captive animals year-round (they especially like the wild boar enclosure) and steal their provisions. Because of this, they’re used to seeing humans nearby.
