Making scientific predictions is a risky business.  Just a few days ago meteorologists announced the greatest snowstorm ever for NYC.    The city came to a stop, all transportation was banned, people raided supermarkets, and got ready for it.

Then nothing much happened.  At least in NYC.  The storm was heavy in the northern Atlantic states but it fell short of a major disaster.

So science can be wrong.  Even when all the signs are added up together to forecast disaster, nature has a way doing the unpredictable.
volcano, growth, supervolcanoes
Yellowstone illustration by National Park Service  - LIVE SCIENCE

Anyway, here is a report about a reputable geologist stating that in the case of the Yellowstone supervolcano nothing can be predicted beyond a two-week time frame.

The number of earthquakes at Yellowstone has ramped up, along with the appearance of other disturbing geological signs, and a major eruption could happen during our lifetime - or even next month.  All the signs are there, we just don't know when the overdue eruption will take place.

Whether the government is suppressing alarming news or not, we can't tell for sure.  There could be many reasons behind it.  One of them is that since there is no certainty one way or the other, government and business don't want panic and a drop in real estate prices in the area most likely to be affected.

Whether predictions for ANY disaster turn out to be accurate or not, always be prepared.

You need food, water, medicine, and other necessities for at least three months, not only for your family but for your pets, in case you need to hunker down at home.

You also need an evacuation plan and some cash.  With our dependence on computers there may come a time when electronic access to funds is not available (an EMP event would fry the grid).

Check the web to get an idea of what you need.  Search using words such as preparedness, emergency, and prepper.  I have provided you with 50 links to some of the best prepper sites, and one exclusively for pets.  Never again should families be forced to abandon their pets, as was the case with the Katrina disaster.

Yellowstone Geologist predicts
volcano eruption within two weeks

As of January 29, 2015, Hank Hessler, a park geologist stationed at Yellowstone National Park since 2002, publicly announced and put only a 2 week time-frame for the supervolcano located under the park to erupt.  (Meaning that things appear safe for the next two weeks, but that science can predict beyond that - blogger.)
steam
Yellowstone National Park

There were more than 1,900 documented earthquakes throughout the park in 2014 alone as swarm activity continues to increase.

On March 4, 2014, Intellihub came across information, by an unnamed source, who reported that the White House had ordered the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to suppress earthquake swarm data within the region to hide what may be coming from the general public.

And this is where it gets scary as Yellowstone and a 1000 mile swath surrounding the park’s supervolcano may be on the brink of an extinction level event (ELE).

eruption
In fact reports suggest that ancient Helium4 gas has breached the surface layers of Yellowstone’s crust and is now escaping into the earth’s atmosphere. Coupled with the recent and abrupt ground level rise in the park we may be looking at a recipe for disaster.

After all, Michio Kaku, a famous theoretical physicist, pointed out in a January 2011 newscast which aired on CNN, “When it blows [Yellowstone] it could destroy the United States as we know it. […] That’s what is making us nervous”

Shockingly, later in the newscast, Kaku went on to explain how a 1000-mile ring of the U.S. would likely be destroyed if the supervolcano actually went. And to make matters worse, geologists all conclude that the park is long overdue for an eruption.

Dormant: The last volcanic eruption at Yellowstone was 70,000 years ago

In fact, the last Yellowstone eruption was thought to have happened around 630,000 years ago, meaning we are about 30,000 years overdue, literally putting us in the hot seat, front row.

Kaku also pointed out that, “Every single burp, murmur, of this gigantic supervolcano, including the rise above sea level, has to be watched very carefully”.

So basically if you do the math for the disaster zone radius, the first 100-miles emanating out from ground zero would be completely wiped out. After that, ninety percent devastation would span out another 500 plus miles from ground zero, making a 1000-mile diameter ring that will essentially be fully decimated from the blast.

Additionally this would essentially put what’s left of the United States into a State of Emergency and full-on martial law would be declared under National Security Presidential Directive (NSPD) 51.

And it gets even worse.

YELLOWSTONE ROADS MELTING - BECAUSE OF HOT SPOT CREATED BY EXTREME HEAT FROM SURROUNDING THERMAL AREAS

Melting road in Yellowstone National Park

Extreme heat from surrounding thermal areas has created a hot spot in Yellowstone National Park, melting a portion of a road and causing temporary closures in the park during the peak summer tourist season.

The more than 3-mile-long Firehole Lake Drive, an offshoot of the park’s Grand Loop Road located between the Old Faithful geyser and Madison Junction, is closed because melting asphalt has turned it into a “soupy mess,” said park spokesman Dan Hottle.

YELLOWSTONE OLD FAITHFUL GEYSER STREAMING WEBCAM

Old Faithful, named by members of the 1870 Washburn Expedition, was once called “Eternity’s Timepiece” because of the regularity of its eruptions. Despite the myth, this geyser has never erupted at exact hourly intervals, nor is it the largest or most regular geyser in Yellowstone National Park. It does, however, erupt more frequently than any other of the large geysers.

This webcam also showcases the Upper Geyser Basin, one of the most unique and dynamic places on earth. With about 300 active geysers, this area has the largest concentration of geysers in the world.

Be sure to visit our webcam page for more live views of Yellowstone National Park.

YELLOWSTONE SUPERVOLCANO - RUMOURS THAT THE UNITED STATES IS PREPARING FOR MASSIVE ERUPTION and maybe looking for countries that could host millions of American refugees

Illustration Extinction Protocol website

May 2014 WYOMING - If the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts then millions of U.S. citizens could end up in Brazil, Australia, or Argentina. That’s according to the South African news website Praag, which said that the African National Congress was offered $10 billion a year for 10 years if it would build temporary housing for Americans in case of an eruption.

The potential eruption of the supervolcano, one of the biggest in the world, has been a hot topic ever since videos of animals allegedly fleeing the area before an earthquake were posted online. Although the veracity of the claims haven’t been backed up, dozens of bloggers and others have been trying to figure out what, if anything, is going on.

One of the latest theories is that the U.S. Geological Service and its partners, which keep an eye on the caldera, are hiding data from the public. The Praag article says that the South African government fears that placing so many Americans in South Africa could dramatically change the country.

This map from the U.S. Geological Service shows the range of the volcanic ash that was deposited after the three huge eruptions over the last 2.1 million years.

South Africa will not be part of the plan, because there is a risk that millions of white Americans could be sent to South Africa in an emergency situation and that this would pose a risk to black national culture identity,” Dr. Siph Matwetwe, spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs, is quoted as saying. “We have our own challenges, even if there is enough housing and infrastructure available, it will destabilize the country and may even bring back apartheid.”
USGS Map of the area
The gigantic volcano in Yellowstone has erupted three times over the last two million years, covering a huge area of surrounding land. Maps from educational institutions and government officials project that up to 17 states could be fully or partially impacted if the volcano erupted again. The far south of Canada could also get hit, as well as the far north of Mexico.
Scientists aren’t sure when it will erupt next, although many have sought to assure the public that it probably won’t for a while. In reality, the volcano could erupt at any time, though officials would in theory be able to detect an impending eruption and alert Americans to the threat. –

Documentary Supervolcano - Yellowstone Fury
Supervolcano: Yellowstone's Fury examines the effect a cataclysmic eruption would have on the world and what could possibly be done to prepare for such a disaster.  An eruption on this scale would be the largest natural disaster in recorded history.  It could trigger a volcanic winter, kill millions of people and make most of North America uninhabitable.  New York University Earth Scientist Michael Rampino warns that, "An eruption like Yellowstone could trigger the end of civilization as we know it."

 YELLOWSTONE IN THE NEWS

Study: Yellowstone magma much bigger than thought (Update)

Dec 16, 2013 by Matt Volz for PhysOrg
The hot molten rock beneath Yellowstone National Park is 2 ½ times larger than previously estimated, meaning the park's supervolcano has the potential to erupt with a force about 2,000 times the size of Mount St. Helens, according to a new study.

By measuring seismic waves from earthquakes, scientists were able to map the magma chamber underneath the Yellowstone caldera as 55 miles (88.5 kilometers) long, lead author Jamie Farrell of the University of Utah said Monday.  The chamber is 18 miles (29 kilometers) wide and runs at depths from 3 to 9 miles (5 to 14 1/2 kilometers) below the earth, he added.
That means there is enough volcanic material below the surface to match the largest of the supervolcano's three eruptions over the last 2.1 million years, Farrell said.

The largest blast—the volcano's first—was 2,000 times the size of the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington state. A similar one would spew large amounts of volcanic material in the atmosphere, where it would circle the earth, he said.  "It would be a global event," Farrell said. "There would be a lot of destruction and a lot of impacts around the globe."

The last Yellowstone eruption happened 640,000 years ago, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. For years, observers tracking earthquake swarms under Yellowstone have warned the caldera is overdue to erupt.  Farrell dismissed that notion, saying there isn't enough data to estimate the timing of the next eruption.  "We do believe there will be another eruption, we just don't know when," he said.

There are enough instruments monitoring the seismic activity of Yellowstone that scientists would likely know well ahead of time if there was unusual activity happening and magma was moving to the surface, Farrell said.

The USGS' Yellowstone Volcano Observatory listed the park's volcano alert level as "normal" for December.

Yellowstone attracts millions of visitors with its geothermal features of geysers, hot springs and bubbling mud pots. The park just opened its gates on Sunday for its winter season.

Park officials did not immediately return a call for comment.

A large earthquake at Yellowstone is much more likely than a volcano eruption, Farrell said.  The 7.5-magnitude Hebgen Lake earthquake killed 28 people there in 1959.  Farrell presented his findings last week to the American Geophysical Union. He said he is submitting it to a scholarly journal for peer review and publication.

Brigham Young University geology professor Eric Christiansen said the study by Farrell and University of Utah Professor Bob Smith is very important to understanding the evolution of large volcanos such as Yellowstone's.

"It helps us understand the active system," Christiansen said. "It's not at the point where we need to worry about an imminent eruption, but every piece of information we have will prepare us for that eventuality."

IS YELLOWSTONE SUPERVOLCANO ACTING UP? USGS SAYS THERE IS NOTHING UNUSUAL OR ALARMING

A Brief FAQ About Recent News Reports

February 28, 2014

Recent weeks have seen a flurry of news, real and imagined, about the Yellowstone volcanic system. We present here a brief FAQ about several topics that have appeared in recent news reports.

Has earthquake activity at Yellowstone increased dramatically over the last month?

No. Earthquake activity is normal. When earthquakes occur, they appear on the University of Utah's
Yellowstone Earthquake Map, or on the YVO monitoring page.

Also see our February 5, 2014 Information Statement about the misinterpretation of noise from a broken seismometer.

Is the recent episode of ground deformation worrisome?

No. Current rates of ground deformation are well within historical norms. Please see our February 18, 2014
Information Statement, for more information about ground deformation at Yellowstone

Do helium emissions at Yellowstone signal an impending eruption?

No. YVO Scientist-in-Charge Jacob Lowenstern and colleagues recently published research on helium (He) emissions at Yellowstone in the journal Nature.

The new research looked at apparent changes in the helium output of the Yellowstone area during its two-million-year volcanic history, compared with the previous two billion years of comparative stability.

The research has nothing to do with current activity at Yellowstone, and has no implications about volcanic hazards. For a humorous and informative take on the new research, watch this video, or read this news article.

And if the threat from Yellowstone volcano is really increasing -  would they tell us?

Imagine what an announcement like that would do to real estate values in the surrounding area and to the countless other aspects of our lives that would be affected by simply confirming unusual increased activity.

As a sign of government and media lack of transparency, observe how they are hiding the extent of the Fukushima radioactive contamination of oceans, land and air that has already reached North America.

WHY DON'T NATURAL DISASTERS DOCUMENTARIES TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT THREATS TO NUCLEAR FACILITIES?

By Tracy W.

Yesterday I watched two environmental apocalypse documentaries back to back on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).  Both fall under the "Not-If-But-When" category.

One was about the eventual eruption of a volcano in the Canary Island of La Palma, which will precipitate a mega tsunami on the North American east coast, Europe, Africa, and other areas.

The other was about the eventual eruption of the Yellowstone super volcano that will destroy populations and land over a large area of the United States, while affecting climate and agriculture world wide.

Both documentaries explained how life and civilization would be affected by both disasters but - being documentaries for not only informational but for entertainment purposes - they only glossed over a major consequence resulting from those disasters.

What the documentaries did not mention: the resulting multiple nuclear meldowns

Aside from the immediate loss of life resulting from a tsunami and a volcanic eruption, the most important consequence would be the unleashing of radioactivity over the whole planet as the many nuclear plants in North America and Europe would melt down in a much worse manner than our current nightmare in Fukushima.

We can't even handle one disaster in Japan - How could we cope with multiple ones?
Today is the anniversary of the Fukushima disaster and so far the news keeps getting worse.  That nuclear power plant is basically out of control - only that Japan does not want to admit it.

In these three years there has been no success in even mitigating the nuclear poisoning of air, land and ocean caused by the disaster precipitated by an earthquake and tsunami.  The situation gets worse by the day.  That was a single NPP.  Imagine if disaster wrecked dozens of NPPs.

A conspiracy of silence
But the CBC documentaries made absolutely no mention of that.  We can't hold the CBC responsible for everything in those films, but at the very least the presenter could have mentioned it.  She did not.

There is a conspiracy of silence about the negative aspects of the nuclear power industry - while falsifying its possible benefits.

It is not a clean energy - far from it.  Its waste lasts for millions of years and there is no viable way to store it or recycle it.  Governments are scrambling to find a way to hide it out of sight.  So far all storage areas leak or present too high a risk of contaminating the environment.

In an expression of either cynicism or contempt for humanity, the United States government recently announced the use of taxpayer money to create even more NPPs.  We can't blame the government alone for this insane decision.

We are all responsible
Because of our silence, we are all to blame.  And among the top participants in this conspiracy of silence are green politicians, the media, scientists, and almost the entire ecology movement.  They all divert our attention with the tiring controversy over whether there is global warming or not, or climate change, as they now call it.

The climate is by definition always changing.  It's part of our Earth history.  It has done so from the beginning in slow and in abrupt ways.  We have had global droughts, a snowball Earth when the whole planet was covered with ice, greenhouse conditions, and everything in between.  So the argument over climate change is ridiculous.  Therefore one has to wonder what's behind it.  And the best answer is that it's all to divert attention away from the expansion of nuclear power all over the planet.

Nuclear power plants offer monetary and military benefits to a few.   The uranium extraction industry benefits, the construction and maintenance of the plants employ workers and fill the pockets of entrepreneurs and top managers.  And there is yet another side to this nightmare:  nuclear power plants can be used to harvest weapons-grade plutonium.  That's why so many countries are interested in getting their own nuclear reactors for "peaceful purposes".

We don't even need a cataclysmic disaster to worry about  - it's bad enough as it is.
The mere presence of those reactors represents a potential disaster.  We are all only one "Oops" away from the killing of millions.  Even at the best of times nuclear plants contaminate the ecosystem, including humans living nearby, in spite of repeated government and industry reassurances that it's all "within safety limits".

And then there is the problem of nuclear waste.  How can anyone justify the creation of more nuclear power plants when nobody has any idea of how to safely store or dispose of nuclear waste.  Why would we want to leave that waste for future generations is another question that needs to be answered.

Time to confront the conspirators
Why doesn't the CBC tell the audience the truth?  Or other media?  Or scientists and ecologists bleating about CO2, global warming and climate change?

We need to confront them and their deliberate or unwitting participation in this sinister coverup of the horrors of nuclear power plants.

Influential scientists, ecologists and political leaders make statements or write articles mentioning the dangers or nuclear power plants. But all that is mere lip service to assuage their conscience.  So far - even with Fukushima's daily reminder - there has been no effective, organized effort to raise awareness among the population and to advocate an end to nuclear power plants.  None.  Zilch.  Even the US president, who is thought to have been elected by a majority of forward-looking voters, is a leading advocate for the construction of more nuclear power plants, while - with his Iran policies - enabling the unleashing of a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.

Documentary Mega-Tsunami
Mega-Tsunami is the story of the scientific model of a volcanic collapse of La Palma, projected into the near future. Scientists predict that the giant tsunami could spread throughout the Atlantic Basin, devastating the coastlines of West Africa and Europe. They would then head north to Britain and then across the Atlantic Ocean to North America. In one scenario, in which North Americans would have just three to four hours warning, scientists predict that such a wave could result in roughly four and a half million casualties.
