RADIATION SPIKE 500% HIGHER THAN ELSEWHERE IN THE U.S.A. FOUND AT CALIFORNIA BEACH

(NaturalNews) High levels of radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster reached Pacific shores just days after the catastrophe occurred, according to a recent study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology. But the worst contamination of all, at least as far as iodine-131 is concerned, was found at Southern California's Corona Del Mar Beach.

Tests conducted on samples of Macrocystis pyrifera, also known as Giant kelp, revealed the presence of radioactive iodine-131 at levels 500 percent higher in Southern California than in any other area of the country tested.

According to the figures, samples of Giant kelp pulled from the Santa Cruz area revealed 2.0 becquerels per gram dry weight (Bq/gdwt) of radioactive iodine-131, which can also be written as 2,000 becquerels per kilogram (Bq/kg) of radiation. At Corona Del Mar, however, levels of radioactive iodine-131 were discovered at 2.5 Bq/gdwt, or 2,500 Bq/kg.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s established maximum contaminant level (MCL) for radioactive iodine-131 in milk is a mere 170 Bq/kg. This is the same maximum level established by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for radioactive iodine-131 in food. (http://fukushimafaq.wikispaces.com/Radiation+Allowable+Levels)

An amateur video of a Geiger counter showing what appear to be high radiation levels at a Coastside beach has drawn the attention of local, state and federal public health officials. Since being posted last week, the short video has galvanized public concerns that radioactive material could be landing on the local coastline after traveling from Japan as a result of the 2011 meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi reactors.

Government officials say they are looking into the video shot on Dec. 23 and performing their own sampling of the beaches, but they have found no indication so far that radiation levels were hazardous.

“It’s not something that we feel is an immediate public health concern,” said Dean Peterson, county environmental health director. “We’re not even close to the point of saying that any of this is from Fukushima.”

Although the radiation levels were clearly higher than is typical, Peterson emphasized that it was still not unsafe for humans. A person would need to be exposed to 100 microREMs of radiation for 50,000 hours before it surpassed safety guidelines by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, he explained.

Peterson admitted he was “befuddled” as to why radiation levels were higher than normal, but he was skeptical that the Fukushima meltdown could be the cause. He noted that many innocuous items could spike the radiation levels in an area, including red-painted disposable eating utensils.

JAPAN'S FUKUSHIMA - RADIATION IN FOOD AND ENVIRONMENT BEHIND OFFICIAL REASSURANCES FOR VISITORS

If you are a visitor to Japan, here are some Facts You Should Know About Fukushima

- In a residential area park in Tokyo, 230 km from Fukushima, the soil was found to have a radiation level of 92,335 Becquerels per square meter.

This is a dangerous level, comparable to what is found around Chernobyl ④ zone (the site of a nuclear catastrophe in 1986).

One reason this level of pollution is found in the capital is that between Tokyo and Fukushima there are no mountains high enough to block radioactive clouds.

In the capital people who understand the danger absolutely avoid eating food produced in eastern Japan.

- If you go to the big central fish market near Tokyo and measure the radiation in the air, it registers at about 0.05 micro Sieverts – a little higher than normal level.

But if you measure the radiation near the place where the instrument that measures the radiation of the fish is located, the level is two or three times greater (2013 measurement).

- Vegetables and fish from around the Tokyo area, even if they are irradiated, are not thrown away.

This is because the level established by the Japanese Government for permissible radiation in food – which if exceeded the food must not be sold – is the same as the permissible level of radiation in low-level radioactive wastes.

Which is to say, in Japan today, as the entire country has been contaminated, we have no choice but to put irradiated garbage on the dinner table.

- The distribution of irradiated food is also a problem. Food from near Fukushima will be sent to another prefecture, and then sent on, relabeled as produced in the second prefecture.

In particular, food distributed by the major food companies, and food served in expensive restaurants, is almost never tested for radiation.

- In Japan, the only radiation from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Reactors that is being measured is the radioactive cesium.

However large amounts of strontium 90 and tritium are spreading all over Japan. Strontium and tritium’s radiation consists of beta rays, and are very difficult to measure.

However both are extremely dangerous: strontium can cause leukemia, and tritium can cause chromosome disorder.

Even if Fukushima was ultimately caused by the 2011 earthquake and ensuing tsunami, accidents such as this beg the question: can nuclear energy ever be truly safe? There are three reasons to think that nuclear accidents are common, and could increase – and it’s not because of the technology. Let’s have a look at the evidence.

First, people are fallible, even at nuclear reactors. Operator error is still a very common factor in incidents and accidents.

Second, big accidents almost always have very small beginnings. Nuclear power plants are so complex that relatively simple things — shirt tails, fuses, light bulbs, mice, cats, and candles — can disrupt the entire system.

And finally, many failures are those of organisations more than technology. Given the right event, all these factors can lead to system-wide failure.

FUKUSHIMA ECOCIDE - WE ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE NOW

The big news right now is Syria, where a chemical attack on several hundred people has prompted the United States and British governments into getting ready to attack Syrian government facilities. They want to act and they want to do it now. To teach the Syrian government a lesson - they say - "for poisoning their own people". (Would poisoning other people be OK?)

In the meantime the government of Japan and TEPCO, the company responsible for the Fukushima nuclear power plant, have been poisoning the people of Japan, their drinking water, their food, their air - everything.

But that's not all.

CAN A COUNTRY GET AWAY WITH A SLOW-MOTION NUCLEAR ATTACK ON THE WHOLE PLANET?

Japan and TEPCO have been dumping countless gallons of highly radioactive water into the Pacific, poisoning an ocean that belongs to all of us - people and other living things.

Radioactive air particles have been reaching the US and Canada's west coast since the start, two and a half years ago.

If you're not allowed to dump your house trash on your neighbor's yard, how come our governments are so patient with Japan's ongoing major contamination of the rest of the planet?

FUKUSHIMA HAS BEEN OUT OF CONTROL FROM THE START

And it gets more out of control by the day. Yet, you don't hear a peep from the international community about intervening to protect us from this SLOW-MOTION NUCLEAR ATTACK on the whole planet by TEPCO and the government of Japan - with the silent complicity of OUR governments.

No nuclear accident of this magnitude can be considered a local event subject to local laws.

THERE IS AN URGENT NEED TO ORGANIZE TO OFFER SOLUTIONS AND TO DEMAND INTERNATIONAL INTERVENTION IN FUKUSHIMA

Scientists and nuclear experts need to form a permanent emergency think tank to offer their best options for the containment and mitigation of the damage.

They should look at this as a learning experience because nuclear reactors all over the world are at risk.

It is time for scientists to speak out with one voice in demanding international intervention and that all necessary money and efforts be allocated to mitigate the damage.

Environmental activists must also do more than just report and condemn, and must coordinate their efforts to demand intervention and financial assistance by the world community.

Celebrities intent on doing something good for their fellow human beings could also be called upon to publicize the situation and demand action by our governments.

No effort should be spared. This is a desperate situation.

Since it's obvious that Japan and TEPCO cannot cope at this point, it is up to us to save ourselves. We are all responsible now. The international community must take charge.

Let's demand an international intervention to finance and operate the necessary remediation of the site.
