Origin Energy said the methane bubbles in the river are not caused by CSG activity.
Politician sets a river on FIRE as he tries to show how methane from nearby coal seam gas mining is seeping into the water
  • A Greens MP lit the a river on fire to show the effects of a coal seam gas
  • Jeremy Buckingham recorded the fire at the Condamine River in QLD
  • Methane gas was first noted in the river in 2012
  • Locals and MP Buckingham are calling on the government to stop fracking
  • The energy company involved says methane originates naturally from ancient geological faults, and not from fracking.
  • But researcher with the gas company agrees that gas bubbling in the river has intensified lately
  • Locals are concerned about contamination of the water and dropping levels in ground water.
The flames were burning for a least an hour after being and only subsided when a local paddled water onto the flamesFootage shows huge flames erupting from methane gas bubbling to the surface of the Condamine River, a result of ongoing coal seam gas mining in the region, some locals say.

Large bubbles of the gas gurgle along the surface of the river before Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham waves a kitchen lighter over the side of a tinny boat.  Without warning the river explodes in flames, forcing Buckingham to retreat to the opposite side of the boat.

LEGENDARY RIVER OF BOILING WATER FOUND IN THE AMAZON FOREST - It boils because of fault-fed hot springs - Animals who fall into it are boiled alive

Ruzo heard about the river when his grandfather told him a story about how Spanish conquistadors killed the last Inca emperor. The story goes that after the murder, the Spanish conquistador headed into the Amazon rainforest in search of gold~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A legendary river that BOILS its victims alive is discovered deep in the heart of the Amazon
  • The river in Mayantuyacu was found by Andrés Ruzo after his granddad recalled a legendary tale
  • Academic experts told him that it couldn't exist because the Amazon basin is far from volcanic activity
  • Ruzo has since published a book that reveals how fault-fed hot springs cause the river to boil

  • A mysterious, four-mile long river, deep in the heart of the Amazon, is so hot that it boils.
    As a PhD student in geophysics at Southern Methodist University, Ruzo wanted to find the river for himself. 'I began asking that question. Could the boiling river exist?, Ruzo said in Ted Talk. 'I asked colleagues from universities, the government, oil, gas and mining companies, and the answer was a unanimous no'

    The river has long been a legend in Peru, but when geoscientist Andrés Ruzo's heard about it, he thought such a phenomenon couldn't possibly exist.

    INDONESIA'S FIRES CALLED A CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY - ORANGUTANS AND OTHER ANIMALS ARE THREATENED BY FOREST FIRES deliberately set by villagers to clear land - Much of Southeast Asia under a poisonous haze that affects people's health

    While the US president and other leftist leaders blame the West for climate change (they don't call it global warming anymore), countries in Asia are perpetrating ecological crimes against humanity.
    More than 1.7 million hectares (4.2 million acres) of land has been burned and six provinces severely affected by the haze, according to Indonesia's forestry ministry
    More than 1.7 million hectares (4.2 million acres) of land has been burned and six provinces severely affected by the haze, according to Indonesia's forestry ministry

    Fires deliberately set by villagers to clear land are raging across Indonesia, creating thick smog that's believed to be the caused of 500,000 respiratory infections.  The government has been in readiness to evacuate victims from haze-affected provinces, while pollution caused by the fires has killed many and caused respiratory illnesses in half a million.

    The conditions are so extreme that Sutopo Puro Nugroho, spokesperson for the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recently called the persistent haze a "crime against humanity," adding that 43 million people have been inhaling toxic fumes from the smoke for months.

    Innocent animals are being victimized
    A few days ago I posted an article on Indonesia deliberately setting forests on fire to clear land, and then attacking defenseless orangutans who try to flee to safety.   It was the heartbreaking story of a starving mother orangutan with a baby reaching a village only to be stoned by villagers.

    Nick of time: International Animal Rescue's photo shows a baby orangutan holding onto its malnourished mother while being rescued in Borneo's West Kalimantan province. The pair had escaped a forest fire before being set upon by villagers

    An endangered Borneo orangutan and its baby escaped from raging fires in Indonesia that destroyed their forest habitat - only to be attacked by angry villagers.

    The malnourished mother and youngster, called Gito, were found distressed and clinging to one another as locals hurled rocks at them and tried to tie them up before they were saved by International Animal Rescue (IAC).  Read more here

    Indonesia's forest fires threaten a third of endangered orangutans.  Fires have spread beyond plantations deep into primary forests and national parks, the last strongholds of the endangered apes.

    But not much is being reported about Indonesia's ongoing practice of setting fire to the forests, with the resulting destruction of trees, animals' habitat and animals themselves, and the poisoning of the air with smoke that make people ill, not only in Indonesia but in many other parts of Southeast Asia.

    GEOLOGIST'S LETTER TO THE EDITOR PREDICTED THE COLORADO EPA TOXIC MINING SPILL ONE WEEK BEFORE THE DISASTER - The letter outlined the EPA deliberate plan to declare the area a Superfund Site, preventing any further mining development

    The waste, which had been held behind rocks near the entrance to the mine, was originally thought to be only one million gallons, but officials have now admitted that it is three times as large
    It's not that mining is always a good idea - considering its lethal effects on the environment.  But the letter and this coincidental set of circumstances may raise suspicions in some readers.

    Letter to Editor PREDICTED COLORADO EPA SPILL One Week Before Catastrophe => So EPA Could Secure Control of Area
    Yellow waste from the Gold King Mine in Colorado spilled out into local rivers when a cleanup crew was trying to plug an entrance to a mine. Above, kayakers in the polluted river near Durango right after the spill last week
    Yellow waste from the Gold King Mine in Colorado spilled out into local rivers when a cleanup crew was trying to plug an entrance to a mine. Above, kayakers in the polluted river near Durango right after the spill last week
  • Letter to the editor to a local paper and authored by a retired geologist one week before EPA mine spill detailed verbatim how EPA officials would foul up the Animas River on purpose in order to secure superfund money.
  • If the Gold King mine was declared a superfund site it would essentially kill future development for the mining industry in the area. The Obama EPA is vehemently opposed to mining and development.
  • Officials admit that waste spill from Colorado mine was actually THREE TIMES larger than they thought... and that the contaminated water turning rivers orange was laced with arsenic
  • Waste gushed out from Gold King Mine, near Durango, while cleanup crews were trying to secure an entrance there
  • The acidity of the river increased 100-fold with iron, zinc, lead and 300 times the normal level of arsenic present
  • Creek near mine leads to Animas River, which flows into New Mexico and joins Colorado River in Utah
  • Drinking water was said to be safe, but now residents along the rivers told to test well water before using it
  • Durango and La Plata County declare emergencies as residents told to avoid all recreational contact with the water
  • UPDATE - Interview with the geologist who predicted the EPA spill

  • The Gateway Pundit reports:  Last Wednesday, a small EPA-supervised work crew inspecting the Gold King mine accidentally knocked a hole in a waste pit, releasing at millions of gallons of acidic liquid laden with toxic heavy metals. (ABC)

    This letter to editor, posted below, was published in The Silverton Standard and The Miner local newspaper, authored by a retired geologist, one week before EPA mine spill.

    The letter detailed verbatim, how EPA officials would foul up the Animas River on purpose in order to secure superfund money.

    If the Gold King mine was declared a superfund site it would essentially kill future development for the mining industry in the area. The Obama EPA is vehemently opposed to mining and development.

    The EPA pushed for nearly 25 years, to apply its Superfund program to the Gold King mine. If a leak occurred the EPA would then receive superfund status. That is exactly what happened.

    The EPA today admitted they misjudged the pressure in the gold mine before the spill – just as this editorial predicted.

    The letter was included in their print edition on July 30, 2015. The spill occurred one week later.

    Environmental factors are blamed for the sharp increase in cases of autism in children.  According to the Autism Science Foundation, in 2014 1 in 68 children were diagnosed with autism, 30% more than in 2012, when it was 1 in 88.

    Harvard University study shows environmental pollution as one cause for the dramatic rise in autism.

    Statistics also show that humans are getting less intelligent.  IQ has declined 14 points since the Victorian era.

    Stop polluting my world.  Please.

  • Researchers at University of Copenhagen studied polar bear brain tissue
  • They found perfluoroalkyl pollutants accumulated in the animals' brains
  • Higher levels were associated with lower levels of key neurotransmitters

    THE MYSTERIOUS SLIME TAKING OVER RIVERS ALL OVER THE WORLD - It is a type of algae also known as DIDYMO and GREEN SNOT - It spreads through human activity in rivers and streams

Unauthorized duplication of this blog's material is prohibited.   Excerpts and links may be used, provided that full credit and link is given to Otters and Science News Blogspot.  Link to this post:  http://ottersandsciencenews.blogspot.ca/2015/02/the-mysterious-slime-taking-over-rivers.html - Thank you for visiting my blog.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    It began with a few small strange patches of slime, clinging to the rocks of the Heber River in Canada.
    stalked  Didymosphenia geminata frustule
    Close-up photograph of a stalked
    Didymosphenia geminata frustule
    Within a year, the patches had become thick, blooming mats. Within a few years the mats had grown into a giant brownish-yellow snot.
    And within a few decades this snot had spread around the world, clogging up rivers as far away as South America, Europe and Australasia.
    This snot, which is still flourishing today, is caused by a microscopic alga, a diatom that goes by its scientific name Didymosphenia geminata.
    It has become so notorious it has its own moniker, Didymo. People have been blamed for the sudden, global explosion of this tiny organism, unwittingly carrying the algae from river to river on fishing gear, boats and kayaks.
    The huge snots it forms have wreaked havoc in waterways, forcing governments and environmental organisations to initiate huge and costly clean-up operations.
    A strange story
    Didymosphenia mats
     Didymosphenia mats forming in
     the Stamp River, Vancouver Island
    But underlying the snots’ strange appearance is an even stranger story. About Didymo itself, about what it is, and how it behaves.
    Scientists are now discovering that the sudden appearance of Didymo may not have been so sudden after all.
    Its blooms aren’t really blooms – instead they are more of an elixir-induced metamorphosis. And Didymo seems to ignore the usual rules followed by invasive species.
    It even appears likely that this little diatom may not even be a significant problem itself; instead the brownish-yellow snot it forms may be a symptom of greater changes underway in freshwater systems around the world.
    NUCLEAR EXPLOSION IN CLOSED RUSSIAN CITY in Siberia - Authorities say there is no cause for concern
    The Siberian Times reports:
    • A small explosion at nuclear facility in a Siberian ‘closed city’ is being downplayed by the authorities, despite panic spreading among the population.
    • Formerly called Tomsk-7 and located on the Tom River, Seversk was established in 1949 to produce and process materials for the Soviet nuclear weapons programme.
    • It was a secret city and did not appear on any maps until 1992 when then Russian President Boris Yeltsin said that these communities could revert back to their original historical names.
    • Despite also removing the official secret status, it remains a closed city to non-residents today and there are six checkpoints at which visitors must show necessary entry documents.
    Operators of the Siberian Chemical Industrial Complex say a container housing depleted uranium lost pressure and ignited, seriously injuring a nearby worker.
    Officials are reassuring the public there has been no radiation leak into the surrounding area in Seversk, Tomsk region, with the situation being monitored using special equipment.
    But concerned local residents have called news channels and taken to social media sites to express their anxiety over the emergency at the sprawling site. Some fear being able to open their windows.
    The city, which was not even marked on maps during Soviet times and is still closed off to visitors, is no stranger to major incidents. In 1993 an accident at the Tomsk-7 Reprocessing Complex released a cloud of radioactive gas into the air, in what became one of the world’s worst nuclear disasters.
    3 BILLION GALLONS OF FRACKING WASTE WATER WERE PUMPED INTO CLEAN CALIFORNIA AQUIFERS - "Errors were made" state admits
     by Tyler Durden, Zero Hedge
    BarnettShaleDrilling-9323.jpg
    State regulators favoring oil companies for reasons only they know.
    Oil companies blaming the error on a "paperwork issue"
    Dear California readers: if you drank tapwater this morning (or at any point in the past few weeks/months), you may be in luck as you no longer need to buy oil to lubricate your engine: just use your blood, and think of the cost-savings. That's the good news.
    Also, the bad news, because as the California’s Department of Conservation’s Chief Deputy Director, Jason Marshall, told NBC Bay Area, California state officials allowed oil and gas companies to pump up to 3 billion gallons (call it 70 million barrels) of oil fracking-contaminated waste water into formerly clean aquifiers - aquifiers which at least on paper are supposed to be off-limits to that kind of activity, and are protected by the government's EPA - an agency which, it appears, was richly compensated by the same oil and gas companies to look elsewhere.
    And the scariest words of admission one can ever hear from a government apparatchik: "In multiple different places of the permitting process an error could have been made."
    ANTI-DEPRESANTS LEACHING INTO WATER SUPPLIES MAKE WILDLIFE SICK AND EVEN KILLS THEM - Otters with liver damage, starlings dying - Birth control pill ingredients causing severe hormonal disorders in fish
    Danger: Two commonly used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are causing severe liver damage to otters
    Are happy pills destroying our wildlife? Starlings dying. Otters with liver damage. Cuttlefish driven crazy. How anti-depressants leaching into water supplies are wreaking havoc.
  • Starlings lose interest in food and sex after being exposed to Prozac
  • And crayfish become more aggressive when exposed to the 'happy pills'
  • As many as one in six people in the UK take anti-depressants
  • While anti-inflammatory drugs are causing severe liver damage in otters
  • They are reckless, feckless, sexually useless and easy meat for predators. They are even at risk of liver damage.
    No, not a new generation of drink and drug-addled youths. This is the wildlife of Britain, creatures whose brains and bodies are being sent haywire by the torrents of antidepressants, contraceptive pills and painkillers that we flush with our urine into the waterways every year.
    The victims include starlings, otters, cuttlefish and crayfish. But scientists fear these animals represent only a few of the UK species being threatened by our pill-popping habits.
    DANGEROUS PATHOGENS AND INDUSTRIAL WASTE GET INTO YOUR FOOD VIA SEWAGE SLUDGE USED AS FARM FERTILIZER - Partial treatment does not destroy dangerous pathogens and heavy metals.
    It is estimated that approximately half of treated sewage sludge – about seven million dry tons per year – is applied to farm fields as fertilizer.   Also known as "biosolids," it is often provided to farmers for free.   While it may be an environmentally sound example of recycling, in many cases it’s merely relocating pathogens rather than disposing of them.
    The Real Dirt on Sewage Sludge
    By Wendy PriesnitzNatural Life's editor and author of twelve books.
    This article won an Outstanding Media Contribution Award from the Recycling Council of Ontario.
    Hold your nose! Waste from households and industries treated at a sewage plant may be spread on a farmer's field near you. Unfortunately, it may contain heavy metals and other nasty surprises that could end up on your dinner plate.
    sewage sludge renamed as biosolids for fertilizer is dangerous
    Photo US Fish and Wildlife Service
    The safe disposal of hazardous waste has been a challenge for both industry and governments for decades. Under increasing assault by environmental groups for dumping waste into landfills, oceans, rivers and lakes, or burning it in incinerators, corporations and governments seem to have agreed upon a new solution.
    They rename the waste as fertilizer or dust suppressant and spread it on farmers’ fields and country roads. The code word for this practice is “beneficial use”. While it may be an environmentally sound example of recycling, in many cases it’s merely relocating pathogens rather than disposing of them.
    Although many different industries are “recycling” their toxic waste in this manner, one of the most controversial substances is sewage sludge, which is widely used as a soil amendment by farmers in both the United States and Canada.
    Sewage Sludge By Any Other Name
    Sludge is the mud-like material that remains after treatment of the wastes that flow into local sewage treatment plants. In the U.S., it is estimated that approximately half of treated sewage sludge – about seven million dry tons per year – is applied to farm fields as fertilizer. In many cases, it is provided to farmers for free.
    If human wastes were the only thing entering the sewage treatment plants, then sewage sludge would be a relatively safe, nutrient-rich fertilizer that could be safely used in this manner. However, sewage treatment plants also inevitably receive industrial and household toxic wastes.
    In a November, 1990 edition of the United States Federal Register, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had this to say of sewage sludge:
    “Typically, these constituents may include volatiles, organic solids, nutrients, disease-causing pathogenic organisms (bacteria, viruses, etc.), heavy metals and inorganic ions, and toxic organic chemicals from industrial wastes, household chemicals and pesticides.”
    In fact, there are thousands of substances that can be found in typical sewage sludge, including any of the 100,000 or so chemicals produced and used in industrialized nations, many of which illegally end up in the sewers. Anything that is dumped into a sewer – and that is removed from water by the treatment process – becomes sludge.
    THE BIG EXTINCTION - HALF OF THE WORLD'S WILD ANIMALS HAVE DISAPPEARED IN THE LAST 40 YEARS due to human destruction of habitat, poaching, and other practices - Overpopulation has turned humans into a parasitic outbreak that is destroying life on Earth, say scientists
    Endangered: There are only around 3,200 tigers left in the wild - the predators' numbers have declined by a huge 97 per cent in the last 100 years
    Murdered to make medicine for the Chinese
    Mankind's need for land and resources, combined with hunting and poaching, are causing our wild animals to die out
  • Wildlife populations around the globe have declined by 52 per cent on average since 1970, a new report has found
  • The likes of forest elephants, African lions and tigers are under threat, as well as British harbour seals and birds
  • Lion numbers dropped 90 per cent in 40 years, tigers by 97 per cent in 100 years and elephants 60 per cent since 2002
  • The authors compiled data on 10,380 animal populations, including 3,038 different species, as an index to judge how global wildlife is faring as a whole.  It shows that British animals have not escaped the global decline. The audit, which is published every two years, found that 90 per cent of corn buntings, a bird once often seen perched on fences, have disappeared from our countryside.
    Worldwide problem: Fewer than 100,000 forest elephants now remain, as their numbers have dropped by 60 per cent in just 12 years
    Massacred to harvest their ivory for trinkets for the Asian market.
    Elephants will be extinct in the wild in one or two decades.
    BOOK BITS: "SPILLOVER, Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic" -- Environment destruction is unleashing infection outbreaks -- HUMANS TOO ARE AN OUTBREAK: overpopulation has turned us into a threat to all life on planet Earth
    Mass demonstrations took place today in many parts of the world to raise awareness about climate change, and to push for environmental policies.
    President Barack Obama:  Climate change is the global threat of our time.
    And environmentalists everywhere agree with him.
    However, they all remain silent about the real cause of our planet ecological degradation:  Human overpopulation.
    People who care about the environment are chasing after policies that will reduce carbon emissions, slow down the destruction of our forests, and reduce our consumption of natural resources overall.
    But how can we honestly address any of those problems without even mentioning our reproductive rate, which has been out of control for a long time?
    Spillover-coverDavid Quammen's book Spillover, Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic is mostly about the science of identifying and tracing the origin and path of diseases when they pass from one species to another.  That's called Spillover
    Zoonosis is when a pathogen passes from an animal to a human.
    This is a fascinating subject, and the 520 pages of this highly praised book leave you wanting to learn even more.
    Breaking the politically-correct silence regarding human overpopulation.
    What I'd like to call attention to is two short sections in this book that break the spell of silence on the subject of human overpopulation, and the immense damage excessive population is doing to the planet.
    Author David Quammen tells of how major zoonotic diseases have appeared rather suddenly in the 20th and 21st century.  Why is that?
    David Quammen
    He tells us how these disease outbreaks that are coming one after another are all connected.
    And they are not simply happening to us, he says.  They are the unintended results of things we are doing.
    They represent the convergence of two forms of crisis on our planet, he says.  The first crisis is ecological, the second is medical.  As the two intersect, we see a pattern of weird and terrible new diseases, emerging from unexpected sources.
    How do such diseases leap from nonhuman animals into people, and why do they seem to be leaping more frequently in recent years?
    The ugly truth:  We humans have indirectly caused these outbreaks.
