See stomach-churning  photos of Kirill Oreshkin and his friends at the top of buildings, cranes, and construction sites – standing or even dangling from the top.  The trend of rooftopping, or skywalking, has been documented in the last few years, and seems to be quite popular in Russia and Ukraine. It sees daredevils climb to the top of structures to take a unique, vertigo-inducing selfie.

Whenever I see young people doing stunts I think of their parents, and how much time, effort and love they invested in making sure their little ones grew up to be healthy and mature adults.  Now their offspring put their lives at risk just for the heck of it.  Not once, but repeatedly.

JAPANESE PARK WHERE YOU CAN SWIM WITH DOLPHINS AND EAT DOLPHIN MEAT

Attraction planned by officials in Taiji, a town famous for killing dolphins

Made famous in Oscar-winning dolphin slaughter documentary 'The Cove'

Visitors will be able to watch the mammals which are kept in sea nets

Meanwhile, they can eat meat of dolphins which were slaughtered locally

A water park where visitors will be to swim with wild dolphins before sitting down to eat the meat of the mammal is being planned in Japan.

 

The controversial tourist trap has been announced by town of Taiji in the south-east of the country which is already known for its mass dolphin hunts which turn the shoreline blood red.

 

The fishing town was made famous when an Oscar-winning documentary called 'The Cove' revealed how the animals are rounded up in the sea before being stabbed to death for their meat.

Japan regularly draws criticism for its annual whale hunt in the Antarctic, with Australia bringing the issue to the International Court of Justice this year.  Tokyo defends the practice as internationally legal 'scientific research'.

SHOULD PEDESTRIANS WEAR HELMETS? A SMALL SAMPLE MAJORITY THINKS SO.

SCARY!  Although this was a small sample with no scientific value and just for fun, it suggests that you could make people support anything - just anything - if worded the right way, and probably invoking the right leader too.

 

 

Should the government enforce the mandatory use of helmets while walking?

 

14 out of 20 people asked that question at the University of Texas supported the draconian measure, emphasizing once again how the majority of the general public will accept almost any nanny state measure no matter how ludicrous.

 

The petition was entitled “Compelled Helmet Use for Misfortunate Public’ (CHUMP), and called for the City of Austin to enforce mandatory helmet usage for all citizens in addition to the creation of special walking lanes where people could walk obliviously while texting on their cellphones.

 

Most of the individuals who signed the petition had it explained to them very clearly. Some signed straight away, while others took a little convincing but happily put pen to paper.

From crippling cyber-attacks by terrorists using the internet to cause havoc, to the release of engineered diseases and killer computers, they warn the future is far from rosy.

 

But the work being done by the Cambridge Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) should one day help the world sleep a little easier at night.

 

Once the threats have been identified, the group intend to devise ways of 'ensuring our own species has a long-term future'.

 

Although nuclear annihilation and a giant asteroid obliterating the planet remain distinct, if unlikely possibilities, Lord Rees now believes 'the main threats to sustained human existence now come from people, not from nature.'

SPAIN'S SKYSCRAPER IS BUILT - BUT FORGOT TO FIT ELEVATORS

Construction firm builds 47-storey skyscraper in Spain, but forgets to fit a lift

Giant towers were supposed to be a symbol of Spain's bright new future

Lift exists for first 20 floors - but developers doubled scale of building

Now there is no more space for more lifts and motor equipment

Architects have resigned after latest setback in beleaguered project

It was due to open in 2009, but now joins a series of white elephants that have been caused by the country's deep recession. 

 

Not only did construction workers go for four months without pay in 2010, but they were also forced to walk up and down the half-constructed towers for months as a service lift was not built until the first 23 storeys had been completed.

 

The lift that was eventually installed collapsed in July 2011, injuring 13 workers Ambulances reportedly struggled to reach them, because the area surrounding the construction site had not been cleared for vehicle access in an alleged bid to save money.

FUKUSHIMA'S ONGOING ECOCIDE OF PACIFIC OCEAN LIFE

The Fukushima disaster - the beginning of marine ecocide on a planetary scale?  It has already contaminated the Pacific Ocean, the biggest body of water on the planet.

 

I've  avoided writing about the Fukushima disaster because it is so overwhelming from so many points of view that it is difficult to find the words.  Some generations had to live through wars and witness the genocide of millions.  But never anything like this, a case of ecocide on a global scale. 

 

Russia and other countries have been dumping nuclear waste in the Baltic, the British have done in the Channel, and the Mafia uses the Mediterranean for covert dumping of toxic waste.  But people still consider them limited localized events.  They shouldn't, but they do. 

 

However, the case of Fukushima is different.  The never ending (and there is really no end in sight) radioactive poisoning of the Pacific Ocean can severely damage, mutate, and even destroy much of the marine life on Earth.  There is only one ocean on the planet. 

 

Japanese people have already suffered the effects of radiation in the aftermath of this disaster.  The radioactive plume reached the American west coast early on, and now continues to spread all over the planet. 

 

The United States and the European Union are busy with comparatively minor issues, and they have irresponsibly turned their eyes away from this ongoing disaster that is much more urgent than the issues that absorb their governments at this time.  They should have been at the forefront from the very start of the Fukushima disaster demanding immediate mitigation of the damage.  They have the technology to help. Why haven't they done so?  Why haven't they told the Japanese government that this is not a contained Japanese problem, but it is affecting all of us - our air, our food, our health.

 

In the meantime Japan - in one of the most bizarre acts ever - ordered the suspension of imports of wheat from the US out of fear that it may contain GMOs.  GMOs should be the least of their worries when their children are breathing and eating tiny pieces of radioactive fuel rods in their environment.

FAROES FISHERMEN TURN SEA RED WITH WHALE BLOOD EACH YEAR

A tradition?  A sport?  A primitive and gory spectacle?

Faroe Island fishermen murder hundreds of pilot whales every year.  They say it's tradition.

 

The Faroe Islands, located between Norway and Island, are a sovereign country but within the  Denmark's realm.  Their population is only 50,000.

 

Haunting images of local residents slashing whales, turning the water red with blood, have fueled protests from environmental activists who say the hunt is cruel.

Warned by their own Faroes Chief Medical officer:  Whale meat is not fit for human consumption.

On 26 November 2008, the Chief Medical Officer in the Faroes, Dr Høgni Debes Joensen, together with Dr Pál Weihe of the Department of Public and Occupational Health, issued a joint press statement with a recommendation that the meat and blubber of pilot whales was no longer fit for human consumption because of the  high levels of mercury and other toxins that accumulate in the meat and organs of the whales and a comparatively high incidence of Parkinson’s disease, diabetes and other serious health issues in the Faroes linked to these contaminants.

FAMILY FINDS RARE OCTOPUS - THEY KILL IT AND EAT IT

American family catch extremely rare six-tentacled octopus during Greek vacation. So they kill it and serve it with a slice of lemon.

 

So far only two of this type of octopus have been ever seen.
