  • These stunning shots may look like alien landscapes but they were actually taken in the deserts of south-western USA.
  • British photographer David Clapp travelled to Arizona, Utah, Nevada and New Mexico to capture landscapes for a photographic series on 'otherworldly' locations across the world.
  • And as these images reveal, it can be a remote and barren land.
An infra-red image taken at dusk of strange clay formations in Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness in Farmington, New Mexico, is just one of the many bizarre landscapes photographed by David Clapp

Another Earth: Stunning photos capture Australia's other-worldly 'Ice Cream Dunes' where the sand is so pale it looks like snow
  • Jordan Cantelo from Perth found the sand dunes outside of a coastal town of Lancelin in Western Australia, where they run for 50 miles
  • Nicknamed the 'Ice Cream Dunes' they can reach up to 98ft in height and run for almost 50 miles along the coast
  • The sand is so pale that it looks like snow giving the impression the images are of an arctic tundra

Want a flake in that? The rippling surrounds have been nicknamed 'Ice Cream Dunes' and in some shots look good enough to eat

PORTUGAL VILLAGE BUILT IN AND AROUND GIGANTIC 200-TONNE BOULDERS

Architecture completely adapted to geology.  But why did they choose to build there in the first place?

'I like that boulder. That is a nice boulder': Villagers in Monsanto, Portugal have made their homes around ancient boulders

  • Mountaintop village of Monsanto, in eastern Portugal, sits 2,486 above sea level
  • Locals have adapted homes around the enormous boulders, rather than attempting to move them
  • Some of the granite stone houses date back to 16th century

  • Inspiration for Hobbiton? The lush green land with homes built into the landscape looks like something out of Lord of the Rings

MAGICAL IMAGES INSIDE THE WORLD'S BIGGEST CAVE - This hidden world has its own river and rainforest

Hang Son Doong in Vietnam was created 2-5 million years ago by river water eroding away the limestone underneath the mountain where the limestone was weak, the ceiling collapsed creating huge skylights.

THE OTHERWORLDLY LOOK OF AN ABANDONED MINE IN BRITAIN

It cost Nasa $2.5 billion (£1.5 billion) to land their Curiosity rover on Mars.  But, with tongue firmly in cheek, perhaps they could have fooled us all by sending a rover to the abandoned Wheal Maid mine in Cornwall instead.

Photographer Mike Thomas’ incredible photos show how, in a secluded part of the UK, there is a landscape that looks as alien as anything any rover has seen on the red planet.

The mine itself was first opened in 1782.  Although it was mostly used to mine copper, there were a number of by-products that are still present today.  These include black tin, arsenic, pyrite and zinc ore, all of which combine to produce the fantastic colours you can see in the images.

AWESOME AND SURREAL CRYSTAL CAVES IN ICELAND - LOOK LIKE FROZEN OCEAN WAVES

Inside the amazing crystal ice caves: Giant waves appear to be frozen in time but are actually moving very slowly as part of a huge glacier

The  stunning clear blue ice caves which stretch as far as the eye can see are one of Iceland's national treasures.  Although the caves look like giant waves, which seem frozen in time, water actually moves down the huge Vatnajokull Glacier at a snail-like speed.

Some glaciers do not move, others shift at a speed of up to 0.3 miles a year. On average glaciers move just millimetres over a 12 month period.

With a surface area of 5,033 miles, it spans eight per cent of the country and is the largest glacier in Europe. At the glacier's thickest point, the width of the ice is 3281 feet (1000 metres).

The scene was captured by Rob Lott, from Wiltshire. The 49-year-old photographer travelled to the area last month and described the moment he pictured the setting as 'one of the most surreal experiences of my life'.  Mr Lott said: 'It is best described as like walking under a huge ocean wave - yet being able to stay dry and breathe.'

The glacier caves are created by geothermal springs which run under the ice and drop to over 1,000 feet (330m) below ground.  Tourists from across the world come to see the scene but visits stop from March because of the risk of the roof melting and collapsing.

BRITISH STORMS UNCOVER MAGICAL 5,000 YEAR OLD FOREST WHERE LEGEND SAYS AN ANCIENT PRIESTESS CAUSED TREES TO BE FLOODED

Beach washed away reveals ancient oaks and pines

    • The ancient forest was covered in peat before eventually being swallowed by the sea
    • Legends say trees and nearby township were flooded after a priestess neglected a magical well
    • Conditions inside the peat, devoid of oxygen and slightly alkaline, have meant the stumps survived
    • They were uncovered by the latest set of storms which washed away the peat layer.
Rising from the beach in a surreal seascape, the remains of these ancient trees have been revealed by the storms.
Thought to date back to the Bronze Age, the shin-high stumps became visible for the first time when the peat which once covered them was washed away in torrential rain and waves pounding the shore.  Now they stud the beach near the village of Borth, Ceredigion, Mid Wales – an area already rich in archaeology, opposite the alleged site of Wales’s own take on the lost city of Atlantis.

Folklore has it that Cantre’r Gwaelod, or the Sunken Hundred, a once-fertile land and township, was lost beneath the waves in a mythical age.  The land is said to have extended 20 miles west of the present Cardigan Bay, but disaster struck and Cantre’r Gwaelod was lost to floods when Mererid, the priestess of a fairy well, apparently neglected her duties and allowed the well to overflow.

Archaeologists knew the 5,000-year-old forest existed on the beach at Borth and stumps were sometimes visible along parts of it at low tide.
