The mesentery was long-believed to be made up of separate structures, but a new study has shown that it is one continuous organ. Researchers hope that the reclassification will aid better understanding and treatment of abdominal and digestive disease.

Researchers from University Hospital Limerick in Ireland used complex microscopy to show that the mesentery was one continuous organ.

Professor J Calvin Coffey, who first discovered the organ, said: 'In the paper, which has been peer reviewed and assessed, we are now saying we have an organ in the body which hasn't been acknowledged as such to date. The anatomic description that had been laid down over 100 years of anatomy was incorrect. This organ is far from fragmented and complex. It is simply one continuous structure.'

The finding has led to Gray's Anatomy – one of the most widely-used series of medical textbooks in the world – being updated to include the new organ.

A single-celled organism called Monocercomonoides lacks mitochondria,

Mitochondria are believed to be essential for eukaryotic cells by generating power for cells

Mitochondria use oxygen and sugar to produce packets of chemical energy.

But monocercomonoides uses a chemical process involving sulphur.

Researchers say that rather than evolving without mitochondria, the creatures lost them at some point in their past

Biologists have discovered a strange single-celled creature which lacks the usual cellular 'power stations needed' to produce energy.

It was thought all complex cells, including animals, plants and fungi, contained the tiny power-producing organs called mitochondria.

But a team in the Czech Republic has discovered a microscopic creature that contains no trace of them at all, making them a biological oddity.

The creature, a type of single-celled organism called Monocercomonoides, is at odds with the idea that mitochondria are essential components of eukaryotic cells.

MAD SCIENCE - MINIATURE HUMAN BRAIN GROWN IN LAB

Pea-sized brains? Incapable of thought? I thought those existed already. Particularly among those promoting nuclear power energy.

More seriously, the implications on the ethical level are considerable. But not in our society where values, when they exist at all, are subject to relativistic and utilitarian interpretation.

Miniature "human brains" have been grown in a lab in a feat scientists hope will transform the understanding of neurological disorders.

The pea-sized structures reached the same level of development as in a nine-week-old foetus, but are incapable of thought.

Scientists at Institute of Molecular Biotechnology of the Austrian Academy of Sciences have now reproduced some of the earliest stages of the organ's development in the laboratory.

They used either embryonic stem cells or adult skin cells to produce the part of an embryo that develops into the brain and spinal cord - the neuroectoderm.

The "mini-brains" have survived for nearly a year, but did not grow any larger. There is no blood supply, just brain tissue, so nutrients and oxygen cannot penetrate into the middle of the brain-like structure.

The clue to our Martian origin is an oxidized form of the element molybdenum, which may have been crucial to the origin of life, likely available on Mars long ago, but unavailable on Earth.

It’s yet another piece of evidence which makes it more likely life came to Earth on a Martian meteorite, rather than starting on this planet.

Organic compounds are the building blocks of life, but they need a little help to make things happen. Simply adding energy such as heat or light turns a soup of organic molecules into a tarlike substance. That's where oxidized molybdenum comes in. Inserting it or boron, another element, into the mix would help organics make the leap to life.

MONARCH BUTTERFLIES REMEMBER A VANISHED MOUNTAIN

During their migration south, monarch butterflies fly over Lake Superior and at one point they veer east and then south again. Why do they do this?

Scientists believe that in the distant past a mountain used to block their path. The old flight map is still embedded in their genes, and they follow it, although the mountain was eroded away a long time ago.

Monarch butterflies are some of the toughest insects in the world. They migrate from southern Canada to Central Mexico. The journey outlasts their individual lifetimes, so they lay eggs along the route. No one generation makes the whole trip.

And for a little geology, I'd like to recommend Ghost Mountains and Vanished Oceans by John Wilson. I really enjoyed this book about ancient geological changes in what is now Canada and the United States.
