DAILY MAIL Residents of Duluth Harbor, Minnesota, were witness to a spectacular phenomenon Sunday, as a wall of 'steam', hundreds of feet high, rose from Lake Superior. Created by warmer lake waters evaporating in the -18 degree air, the churning cliff of fog was stunning but harmless.

STRANGE AND AWE-INSPIRING CLOUD OVER WINDMILLS, AS SUPERCHARGED STORM PASSES OVER THE NETHERLANDS

The images were taken over the windmills of Kinderdijk, Netherlands by photographer Jonas Piontek, who stayed awake all night waiting for the storm to arrive. The storm arrived at sunrise and created this strange orange and purple scene. The same storm produced over 100,000 lightning strikes over the English Channel.

OMINOUS FOG BANK CAME ASHORE IN NEW JERSEY LOOKING JUST LIKE A TSUNAMI - Seen off the coast of Sea Girt

It looks like a scene from a disaster movie - a wall of destruction roaring towards and unprepared beach, with nothing but diminutive lifeguard towers in its way.

But this tsunami lookalike is actually harmless fog, caused by a rare combination of warm and cold air over the New Jersey shoreline.

The intimidating images, captured Sunday afternoon in Sea Girt, a town of less than 2,000, shows the ominous weather formation hovering just off the shore.

FRIGHTENING UFO-SHAPED SUPERCELL CLOUDS OVER ROSWELL, NEW MEXICO - NEAR AREA 51

In the alien invasion movie Independence Day, the spaceships which obliterate Earth's great cities emerge from vast storm clouds just like these.

So it's fitting, then, that these portentous swirling supercells appeared over Roswell, New Mexico, near the U.S. military's secret Area 51 base, where it is widely believed a UFO crashed in 1947.

Jody Miller, from California, tracks down extreme weather conditions like these, risking life and limb to photograph what are incredible examples of the power of nature.

LIGHTNING STORM CREATES AMAZING MUSHROOM-SHAPED CLOUD THAT LOOKS LIKE A NUCLEAR BOMB EXPLOSION

Lightning storm creates terrifying nuclear bomb-style mushroom cloud in the skies above Italian island of Sardinia.

Residents of the normally-sunny island of Sardinia could have been forgiven for running for the hills when this terrifying mushroom cloud appeared in the skies during an intense thunderstorm.

But while it may look like the aftermath of a nuclear explosion the awesome cloud was a purely natural phenomenon - a giant storm cell lit up from the inside by a series of lightning bolts. The stunning set of photographs was taken by 27-year-old photographer Stefano Garau who captured the incredible moment from the balcony of his house after noticing the storm moving in fast.

Striking footage shows a structure being lifted in the air by one of the twisters and then placed back to the ground

Many believe the structure was a Pilger home that was found turned around 180 degrees after the twisters

Corey Savage miraculously survived in the basement of that home along with his 4-year-old daughter and toddler son

GIANT FOG BANK MAKES LAKE MICHIGAN DISAPPEAR FOR A COUPLE OF FISHERMEN

NORTHERN MICHIGAN -- Spencer and Andrew Ballard didn't catch fish but instead caught an eyeful on Lake Michigan on Wednesday. The father-son pair from Frankfort saw an enormous bank of fog roll over them in what Spencer Ballard, 59, said was a beautiful, "once-in-a-lifetime event." And they took a video.

But the actual experience was more impressive than the video. "We couldn't see anything and the wind was crazy -- it wasn't like anything I've seen before," said Andrew Ballard, 25. "There were cool lulls where we were in a clearing with rainbows all around us."

The Met Office has forecast a ten out of ten level of air pollution for London for tomorrow and Wednesday, with warnings that the dust will this week cause one of the worst smogs of the year.
