  • There is no such thing as privacy anymore.  It's clear that we must conduct our lives as if we are being constantly watched.
  • From personal items such as cars and cellphones, to security cameras located just about anywhere - to say nothing of our online connections.
  • That's the price we pay for the marvels of our modern technological world - whether we like it or not.
  • These data bases in themselves are nothing compared to the potential harm in manipulating and falsifying their content in order to blackmail a victim for political or monetary reasons.
  • What if some entity conspired to create false electronic evidence against a top government official in order to blackmail him and control his policies?   This may already been happening, considering the vast technological powers of government intelligence agencies.

LISTENING TO PLANTS 'SPEAK' - Device turns plants' voltage signals into sound - It's nothing like music or even R2D2 - It's more like an unnerving malfunctioning police siren

PhytlSignsQuite frankly, the sound of plant chatter could drive you CRAZY.  Just listen to it once.  But plant scientists are going gaga over their botanic babies' ability to speak, or so they say.

Reporter:  My peace lily starts to behave oddly around mid-morning. It suddenly becomes more animated, with the speaker emitting excited whoops and wobbles. It makes me jump, and I wonder what’s going on in there.

Scientist:  “Having thousands of plant lovers observing their plants and recording their signals will mean we can go much faster in understanding plants”.   (There is one born every minute ....)

By Penny Sarchet, New Scientist
I’m concentrating at my computer when my peace lily lets out a wail. It’s a wavering electric howl that finishes as abruptly as it began. But what does it mean?

Nigel Wallbridge doesn’t know, but he wants to find out. He’s a co-founder of Vivent, the company whose device is giving my peace lily an electronic voice. His hope is that this new way of tracking plant activity will help us to understand and manage them better.

The device, called PhytlSigns, measures voltage in plants using two electrodes, one inserted into the soil and the other attached to a leaf or stem. When the speaker squeals, it means the voltage is changing: the higher the wail, the faster the change.

YOUR GRANDCHILDREN MAY NEVER SEE YOUR CHILDHOOD DIGITAL PHOTOS - Storage media obsolescence and damage are two of many threats to your digitally-stored photos longevity

daily life©http://ottersandsciencenews.blogspot.ca/. Unauthorized duplication of this blog's material is prohibited.   Excerpts and links may be used, provided that full credit and link is given to Otters and Science News Blogspot.  Link to this post:  http://ottersandsciencenews.blogspot.ca/2015/01/your-grandchildren-may-never-see-your.html - Thank you for visiting my blog.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Families used to store photos in a box.  Those treasures got passed on from generation to generation.
Today people store their photos digitally.  And that's a problem.  Digital photos may last a few decades, but not long enough for your grandchildren to see your own childhood pictures.
Threats to your digital photos:  magnets, heat and other environmental conditions. -  And technical obsolescence.
Your typical hard drive uses magnets to write information. With older hard drives, that can be a problem.  Just like a credit card you don't want to put it next to a magnet, because what you have on the magstripe will be erased.
Newborns under 14 days are the easiest to photograph but animated toddlers take heartwarming pictures too
Heat, a spilled cup of coffee and other environmental factors can degrade the information on a hard drive.
Newer hard drives are less susceptible to those factors, according to Ethan Miller, the Symantec presidential chair in storage and security at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
In fact, the data on them should be fine for decades. The actual hard drive, however, will probably break before then.
Tracy Raver"A hard drive is a physical device," Miller told NBC News. "Things like the lubricant and bearings will degrade over time."
Take your hard drive for a spin
Like a car, it's a good idea to take stored hard drives out for a spin every so often. Stored unused in a closet or attic, the mechanical parts in a hard drive can break down over the course of a year or two. At most, hard drives are built to last around five to seven years, Miller said.
Another option is saving documents on a CD or Blu-ray Disc, preferably in a cool, dry area. (Anyone who has left a favorite CD on their dashboard knows why). But those break down over time as well.
Tracy Raver
CDs and DVDs won't fare any better
Burning a CD or DVD involves heating up a layer of dye with a laser. As it does with photographs and clothing, dye on a DVD fades, causing those cherished photos to degrade.
"There are plenty of CDs and DVDs that were burned 10 to 15 years ago that are already bad," Miller said.
The tech, it is a-changin'
THE CLOAKING DEVICE IS ALMOST HERE - SCIENTISTS BUILD INVISIBLE MATERIAL USING LIGHT
Scientists at the University of Cambridge have developed an 'invisible' metamaterial. They say their technique can be scaled up to cloak large objects. This image depicts an efficient route to manufacturing nanomaterials with light through plasmon-induced laser-threading of gold nanoparticle strings
Scientists at the University of Cambridge develop 'invisible' metamaterial
  • They say their technique can be scaled up to cloak large objects
  • It involves stringing together gold nanoparticles as a metamaterial with light
  • The metamaterial can be used to alter interaction with light and make it reflect the 'wrong' way, making the material appear different or invisible
  • These strings are then connected in layers and make a true cloaking device
  • Illustration by Ventsislav Valev - It depicts an efficient route to manufacturing nanomaterials with light through plasmon-induced laser-threading of gold nanoparticle strings
    What is a metamaterial?
    According to the Institute of Physics, metamaterials can bend electromagnetic radiation such as light around an object to give the appearance that it isn’t there.
    To date some researchers have used such properties of metamaterials to create devices that can bend certain forms of radiation such as near-infrared radiation.  So far, however, producing the same effect with visible light has proved more of a challenge
    POCKET MOLECULAR SENSOR - USE SMARTPHONE TO IDENTIFY THE MOLECULAR STRUCTURE OF ANY SUBSTANCE - A STAR TREK INVENTION BY ISRAELI COMPANY -
    SciO in action - Consumer Physics
    Have you ever wondered what is really in the food we eat, or the air we breathe?   What about the difference between two different types of fabrics or brands of aluminum foil?
    An Israeli company has dared to explore the mystery of modern surroundings - and put the tools to measure the molecular structure of any object in the hands of every smartphone user worldwide.
    Meet SCiO, a tiny molecular sensor which syncs with any smartphone to instantly scan and spit back useful information about any physical object.
    The project is the brainchild of a Kickstarter campaign by Tel Aviv-based Consumer Physics, which has raised over $1.6 million in financial support in a matter of weeks.
    How does it work? The device includes an optical sensor, called a spectrometer, that collects the light reflected from a scan of the object and sends data, via Bluetooth and the smartphone app, to a cloud server. Within seconds, an analysis is delivered back to the user with relevant information.
    The promotional video showcases the many practical uses the device could have for the everyday user, including determining a meal's nutritional value, whether or not a food is ripe, and whether or not someone is dehydrated.  Each is determined through various apps offered in the umbrella app for the device, with options for more apps to be added after SCiO is launched. SCiO will begin shipping in December, according to the product's campaign page.
    ISRAEL DEVELOPS PERSONAL ANTI-RADIATION BELT
    An Israeli company called Stemrad has developed a body belt that protects people from the worst effects of gamma radiation. Called the Stemrad 360 Gamma, the belt could be a lifesaver for the emergency services in a nuclear accident.
    Oren Milstein, the co-founder of Stemrad, says it’s partially made out of lead and is designed to first and foremost protect the pelvic area, where most of the body’s renewable bone marrow is made, Reuters reports.
    At just over 15 kilos, the belt would be wearable for most people. A full body suit to protect all the body’s vital organs such as the liver and thyroid would weigh about 200 kilos, so most people wouldn’t be able to wear it.   The belt can protect the wearer for doses of up to 1,000 rads – a high level of radiation poisoning that can cause serious illness and even death.
    SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA - LED STREET LIGHTS UNNERVE LONDON RESIDENTS
    A multi-million pound project to replace street lights with LED lamps has left residents in a London borough feeling like they're 'living on a football pitch'.
    Hounslow Council started installing the ultra-bright lights to improve the area's roads last year.   But homeowners in Park Road, Chiswick, and the surrounding areas have complained their evenings are ruined by the dazzling light pouring through their windows.  They say the lamps are causing them sleepless nights, and have now resorted to methods used during the Blitz to keep the light out.
    GOOGLE ALLOWING STRANGERS TO SEND E-MAILS TO YOUR G-MAIL ADDRESS
    Users of Google's web-based email service Gmail will be bombarded with messages from total strangers following a system update which allows people to send them emails without needing their address, it is feared.
    The change, announced on yesterday, is designed to integrate Gmail with Google+, the firm's two-and-a-half-year old social network that has 540 million active users.  As well as seeing their social network contacts added to their list of email contacts, the update means Google+ users will be able to email people on the social network directly even if they don't have their address.  Currently anyone signing up for a Gmail account is automatically given a Google+ account too.
    Google said the new feature will make it easier for people who use both services to communicate with their friends.  Some privacy advocates said Google should have made the new feature 'opt-in,' meaning that users should explicitly agree to receive messages from other Google+ users, rather than being required to manually change the setting.  Marc Rotenberg, the executive director of non-profit Electronic Privacy Information Center, called the new feature 'troubling'.
    GOOGLE CAN NOW USE YOUR FACE AND NAME IN GOOGLE ADS
    BREIBART - Google has officially updated their terms of service to allow the company to use your name and image on their ads that populate the internet.
    YOU CAN OPT OUT OF THIS HERE.   The new terms of service read:
    If you have a Google Account, we may display your Profile name, Profile photo, and actions you take on Google or on third-party applications connected to your Google Account (such as +1’s, reviews you write and comments you post) in our Services, including displaying in ads and other commercial contexts. We will respect the choices you make to limit sharing or visibility settings in your Google Account. For example, you can choose your settings so your name and photo do not appear in an ad.
    The new "shared endorsements" are ruffling some privacy feathers. "We think it's a problem," says Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center. "It's a commercial endorsement without consent and that is not permissible in most states in the U.S."
    Facebook tried something similar and was forced to pay a $20M settlement, when they were sued in a class action suit. Facebook had used "endorsements" in the ads run on the social network, but they did not provide a way for users to opt out.
    LEVITATION POSSIBLE BY USING SOUND WAVES
    Scientists prove it is possible to levitate
    and move objects in mid air using only sound
    THE TELEGRAPH - Imagine how much easier life would be if it was possible to levitate objects. Maglev trains, for example, use powerful magnets to repel the carriages and remove the friction of the train on the tracks.
    But magnets are just one way of achieving this – and they require the object to have a repelling magnetic force. Now scientists in Japan have shown that a similar effect can be achieved with sound.
    In this video they show that it is not only possible to levitate objects in mid-air using sound waves, but also to move them around. The results can be quite artistic – look about 1 minute in to see just what is possible.
    They then levitate match heads, drops of water, screws and nuts.
    The researchers at the University of Tokyo say they hope to refine the technique so it can be used to manipulate delicate electronic components when assembling hardware.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Researchers develop way to levitate objects
     in 3D space by using sound.

    Could hoverboards (like the one used by Marty McFly in a Back to the Future sequel) be closer than we think?

    HOW DO THE OBJECTS FLY?

    DAILY MAIL - A machine uses speakers that produce sound at high frequencies inaudible to the human ear to generate sound waves that intersect.

    They create a 'moveable ultrasonic focal point' or cross-over of high frequency noise made up of standing waves.

    The waves, which remain in a constant position, provide a suspending force so that the focal point or cross-over can support a small floating object trapped in the standing waves.

    Particles, a screw, 3mm piece of wood, water droplets and a soap bubble have been manipulated in mid air using acoustic levitation.

    VIDEO GAMES - CREATING GENERATIONS OF PSYCHOPATHS

    UPDATE December 2014

    Read the latest article on this subject here:

    http://ottersandsciencenews.blogspot.ca/2014/12/how-violent-and-depraved-video-games.html

    ****************************************

    December 2013:

    By Tanith Carey  - Daily Mail

    Chilling truth about the video games your children got for Christmas: How titles like Pay Day 2, Grand Theft Auto and Mortal Kombat corrupt children as young as five

  • Scenes include women tied to train tracks and a man's kneecaps drilled
  • One five-year-old was bought Grand Theft Auto to bond with his father
  • Another child spent two days in his bedroom playing 11-plus reward game
  • Study found violent games can make 12 to 14 year olds more aggressive
  • 13-year-old boy in Glasgow slashed a rival's throat before quoting a game

  • A generation ago, entertainment during the Christmas period revolved around families playing board games before sitting down to watch the Morecambe And Wise Christmas Show and a Bond film.

    But this year, the launch of two super-powerful games consoles — the Sony PS4 and Microsoft Xbox One — meant that, more than ever, video games like these were among the most popular presents received.

    And despite such stomach-churning content and 18 ratings, the uncomfortable truth is that in hundreds of thousands of homes the person ripping the parcel open was a child.

    But would most parents buy these games if they knew the depravity of their content?

    It seems many do not realise the levels of sex and violence portrayed in such games, and the damage they can do to the under-developed minds of children.

    This week I reviewed some of these games — and the hours I spent doing so were among the most horrible and eye-opening of my life.

    Of course I’d heard they were unpleasant. But I was not prepared for the extreme realism — the latest high-definition games played on the new consoles are almost impossible to tell apart from film — or the fact that players take such an active role in murdering, maiming and torturing others.

    As an adult, I found the gratuitousness and lingering attention to every detail of death disturbing. As a mother and a parenting author, I found imagining this through the eyes of a child terrifying.

    Previous generations still had the blessing of enjoying their childhood.

    These days aside from mind-warping entertaining, there is also the problem with the sexualisation of small children through explicit "sex education" in schools, which erases all concepts of right and wrong by telling children that anything goes as long as they avoid pregnancy and STDs.  Schools are denigrating traditional values and imposing the educators' own moral relativism.

    THE DOG TRANSLATOR - DO YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOUR POOCH IS THINKING?

    The headset that can read your DOG'S MIND: Gadget claims to analyse brain waves to transform inner barks into human speech.

  • No More Woof is a headset for dogs that lets them 'talk' to owners
  • It uses brain-scanning technology and translates thought patterns
  • The prototype includes phrases like 'I'm hungry' and 'I'm tired'

  • It has been developed by the Nordic Society for Invention and Discovery (NCID), a small Scandinavian research lab that has previously developed concepts like the iRock (a rocking chair that charges your iPad), the Fly Lamp (a hovering lamp that follows you around) and Nebula 12 (an indoor cloud generator).

    Potential dog phrases already identified by the developers include: 'This is splendid!', 'Leave me alone', 'I am so very weary', 'Who are you?' and 'Erm, why are you guys leaving?'

    The technology used in No More Woof is a combination of the latest technologies in three different tech-areas, Electroencephalography (EEG) sensoring, micro-computing and special brain-computer interface software.

    Part of the pleasure of developing a relationship with a pet is learning how to communicate with each other - you with words, he with gestures, sounds, and face expressions.  Whoever needs a translator simply has failed to establish such a relationship.  Sad.

    YOUR COMPUTER COULD BE CRACKED BY A SMARTPHONE AS IT LISTENS TO IT RUNNING ENCRYPTION SOFTWARE

    The hum made by your computer's microprocessor could be used by an eavesdropper to track your digital encryption keys, new research claims.

    Researchers at Tel Aviv University in Israel have shown that merely listening to the quiet vibrations made by a computer can reveal what operations it is running.

    Those sounds can be analysed so precisely, they claim, they can even reveal the details of encryption keys used for secure web browsing, credit card transactions and encrypted email.

    Moreover, they say, the keys can be cracked within an hour using little more than a smartphone placed next to the targeted machine.

    And the same technique, the study claims, can also analyse the fluctuations in electrical current flowing through the machine and measured by merely touching it for the same result.

    The Tel Aviv team just yesterday published a paper outlining how the hack could be accomplished through a technique they have dubbed 'low-bandwidth acoustic cryptanalysis'.

    WI-FI IS KILLING YOUR PLANTS - WHAT IS IT DOING TO YOU?

    NATURAL NEWS - Studies continue to show that the radiation generated by wireless routers is negatively affecting our health.  In fact, the British activist website Stop Smart Meters recently published a list of 34 scientific studies demonstrating the adverse biological effects of Wi-Fi exposure, including studies linking it to headaches, reduced sperm count and oxidative stress.

    The latest research into the dangers of Wi-Fi, though, comes from a surprisingly humble source: Five ninth grade female students from Denmark, whose science experiment revealed that wireless radiation is equally as devastating to plants.

    Undeniable results

    The experiment began when the five students realized that they had difficulty concentrating in school if they slept near their mobile phones the previous night. Intrigued by this phenomenon, the students endeavored to study the effects of cellphone radiation on humans.

    Unfortunately, their school prevented them from pursuing this experiment due to a lack of resources, so the students decided to test the effects of Wi-Fi radiation (comparable in strength to cellphone radiation) on a plant instead.

    The girls placed six trays of Lepidium sativum seeds (a garden cress grown commercially throughout Europe) in a room without radiation, and an equal amount in a room next to two Wi-Fi routers. Over a 12-day period, they observed, measured, weighed and photographed the results.

    Even before the 12th day arrived, however, the end results were obvious: The cress seeds placed near the routers either hadn't grown or were completely dead, while the seeds placed in the radiation-free room had blossomed into healthy plants.

    The experiment earned the five students top honors in a regional science competition. Moreover, according to a teacher at their school, Kim Horsevad, a professor of neuroscience at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden was so impressed with the experiment that he is interested in repeating it in a controlled scientific environment.

    WI-FI PUTS CHILDREN, FETUSES AND FERTILITY AT RISK

    By Dr Joseph Mercola

    It may take some sort of catastrophe to get people’s attention,” said Frank Clegg, former president of Microsoft Canada and founder of Canadians 4 Safe Technology, referring to the increasing saturation of Wi-Fi technologies on the public at large, and especially, children.

    Leading experts from top universities recently convened at a program organized by ElectromagneticHealth.org in Connecticut to discuss the reality that such a catastrophe is already brewing and, as the panel warned, is now already negatively impacting children, fetuses and fertility.

    The majority of parents are not connecting the dots by linking symptoms in their children to the radiation.

    During the discussion “Cell Phones & Wi-Fi – Are Children, Fetuses and Fertility at Risk?,” a wide range of scientific evidence was presented that RF/MW electromagnetic radiation has indisputable biological and health effects, including at non-thermal levels, with chronic exposures generally associated with greater harm.

    This is the kind of radiation emitted among others by cellphones, baby monitors, smart meters, cordless phones, cellphone towers, and Bluetooth earpieces.

    Because children are still developing, they have rapid cellular replication and growth rates that make them especially vulnerable to DNA damage.

    They also have a longer lifetime exposure to this new pervasive radiation than any previous generation.

    Radiation from cell phones and Wi-Fi has already been shown to cause diminished reaction time in children, decreased motor function, increased distraction, hyperactivity and inability to focus on complex and long-term tasks.

    There have been actual experiments with mammals showing Wi-Fi damage to a developing fetus.

    Experts warn that radiation from Wi-Fi and cell towers can exert a disorganizing effect on the ability to learn and remember, and can also be destabilizing to immune and metabolic function. This will make it harder for some children to learn, particularly those who are already having problems in the first place.
