The gigantic 'crack in the Earth' in Wyoming: Landslide in the Big Horn Mountains causes canyon-like gash - and it could get even bigger
Gaping: A gigantic opening was spotted in the Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming this month. SNS Outfitter & Guides said 'Everyone here is calling it "the gash". It's a really incredible sight'
  • The opening is thought to be 750 yards long and about 50 yards wide
  • Experts believe it is a slow-moving landslide
  • Believed it could be caused by a spring underneath the area
  • Crack may get larger 'as long as there's room for it to move'
  • There have been several other cases of the Earth splitting open in massive gashes in recent years
  • Wyoming is home to the Devil's Tower (of perhaps volcanic origin), and the Yellowstone supervolcano

TERRIFYING SINKHOLE APPEARS OVERNIGHT IN ENGLAND - The Pennines hole is 100ft wide and growing

Mr Hensby believes the hole could have been caused by either an iron ore mine or a lead mine, both of which operated in the area in the 19th centuryA 100ft-wide sinkhole that is so deep the bottom cannot be seen at one end has appeared overnight just yards from a farmer's house in County Durham.

John Hensby, 71, says his partner Sam Hillyard, 39, first discovered the hole on Thursday morning, adding that it has been growing ever since.  And Mr Hensby now fears that heavy rain forecast for the coming days could be about to make the situation even worse.

While lead mining started in the Pennines around 2,000 years ago, commercial operations didn't start until the mid-1800s and continued until the early 1900s, starting up again for a few years during the First World War.  Around this time the landscape was littered with chimneys and huge waterwheels that were used to sort useful ore from soil and other scrap, though only a few remain today.  The mines also produced zinc ore, iron ores, and fluorite also known as fluorspar, though the areas is less well-known for these.

ENORMOUS CRACK IN THE GROUND APPEARS IN NORTHERN MEXICO - Cause uncertain

Incredible footage has emerged showing a 26ft (8m) deep crack in the in the farmland of northwest Mexico, which stretches for over a kilometre.

The crevice which appeared last week, has disconnected Highway 26 between Hermosillo and the coast, Sky News reported.

Drivers, including farm workers, have been forced to navigate around the colossal trench.  The video showcasing the crack that in some parts is 16ft (5m) wide, was shot using a camera attached to a drone device.

Geological investigators are now assessing what caused the crack, according to El Imparcial newspaper.  The civil protection unit believes the fissure may have been caused by an earthquake which hit last Sunday. But another investigation by geologists at the University of Sonora found that farmers in the area had built up a levee stream to contain rainwater which had begun to leak.  Experts believe that this may have caused an underground stream to develop, which soften the earth above it until it collapsed.

DUNES AREA IN INDIANA THAT SWALLOWED A BOY NOW CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC - Number of sinkholes increasing - Reason unknown.

    Indiana Dunes - Wikipedia photo
NPR - Massive sand dunes make up the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Tucked between coal plants and steel mills, the dunes are as high as 200 feet, stretching along the southernmost tip of Lake Michigan.

These dunes were formed some 14,000 years ago, and most are now covered in forest, says Park Ranger Bruce Rowe, who has worked at the lakeshore for 30 years.

"Most of the dunes at Indiana Dunes, people don't recognize as dunes, because they're hiding under an oak forest," Rowe says.   But one dune, Mount Baldy, is different. It's a big pile of sand with not a blade of beach grass to speak of, just a couple scruffy trees struggling to survive.  Rowe says that's partly because of the dune's popularity. About 200,000 people visit the park each year, almost all to get their feet on Mount Baldy.

SINKHOLES NOW OPENING UP ALL OVER BRITAIN - EXTREMELY WET WEATHER TO BLAME?

Terrifying sinkholes are appearing at five times their normal rate, and further bad weather could mean we haven't seen the last of them
    • Sinkholes seen in Kent, South-East London and Hemel Hempstead
    • One in High Wycombe engulfed a car as it was parked in the driveway
    • Expert believes sinkholes are appearing five times their normal rate
    • Forecast heavy rain could mean more holes appear around the country
Strictly speaking not all the big holes that have been appearing are sinkholes. Technically, a sinkhole is a hole that opens up when the surface layers collapse into a naturally made cavity. When the surface layers collapse into a cavity made by man  — and at least two of the recent holes are in areas where mining has been carried out in the past — then it should be called a dene or crown hole.

But given that both types are caused by a collapse into an underground cavity and the end result — a large, potentially dangerous hole in the ground at the surface — is the same, for the sake of simplicity, let us call them all sinkholes.

Certainly, anyone suffering the tragedy of having their house fall into one won’t be worrying about the difference. Fatalities caused by sinkholes in this country are thankfully very rare.
