STUDY - EVEN A SINGLE TREE CAN CHANGE THE WEATHER IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

  • Years ago I visited Venice, Italy, for the first time and was deeply disappointed.  I had hoped to find a city of magical beauty, but all I saw, when not gazing at the canals, was dilapidated buildings that had once been impressive, narrow claustrophobic alleys, and NOT A SINGLE TREE OR PLANT IN SIGHT.   To find them you must make a trek far from the city centre.  The land is awfully expensive and sidewalks are narrow.  No space to spare for trees. 
  • Being from Vancouver Island I'm used to seeing greenery everywhere, even in winter. 
  • We have a real need to be around plants and trees.  They do much more than produce our much needed oxygen.  They also help us mentally and spiritually by beautifying our surroundings.
  • We like to blame carbon emissions for climate change, but a more likely culprit is the massive deforestation occurring all over the world.  If one single tree can influence neighborhood climate, just imagine what the demise of millions of trees can do.

SCIENCE DAILY - Even a single urban tree can help moderate wind speeds and keep pedestrians comfortable as they walk down the street, according to a new University of British Columbia study that also found losing a single tree can increase wind pressure on nearby buildings and drive up heating costs.

There are countless examples of life-enabling collaboration between bacteria and their animal or plant hosts.  We humans, for example, benefit from bacteria living in our guts to help us digest food.  And 90% of our cells are bacterial.  We look human because our cells are bigger, that's all.    Here is another surprising example of important collaboration between bacteria and other living things:

How Bacteria Help Pitcher Plants Trap Prey
  • Pity the insect that tumbles into a pitcher plant’s trap. The slippery walls and waiting pool of water ensure it won’t clamber back out. There’s nothing left to do but wait to be digested.
  • The California pitcher plant (Darlingtonia californica) is also called the cobra lily for its curled-over shape that hides its exit from its victims.
  • Unlike other pitcher plants, it doesn’t fill its trap from above with rainwater but from below, drawing water up with its roots. But like others, it seems to use bacteria living in that well to help digest its prey.  
  • The bacteria perform another role too: making the liquid even harder for an insect to escape than ordinary water.

Considering all the exotic diseases now being spread by mosquitos it is more important than ever to protect yourself from their bites.  Catnip may be the answer to keeping you safe.   You can plant this herb in your garden or balcony, rub your skin with it, and keep pesky mosquitos away.  This page also includes instructions on how to prepare a home-made lotion.

Researchers report that nepetalactone, the essential oil in catnip that gives the plant its characteristic odor, is about ten times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than DEET — the compound used in most commercial insect repellents.
 
The finding was reported by the  American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society, by the same Iowa State University research group that discovered that catnip also repels cockroaches.

A new study has revealed for the first time that plants can learn about their environment and make links between events in the same way we do.
  • Do plants learn like humans? Smart seedlings can be taught to adapt to their environment
  • Previously it had been thought the ability to learn was exclusive to animals
  • But experiments with pea seedlings suggest that plants can learn too
  • Seedlings were able to learn and choose the best growth direction for survival by correctly predicting the occurrence of light once it was removed

  • We tend to think of intelligence and consciousness in terms of people and brains.  To this day there are scientists who scoff at the idea that monkeys, dogs and farm animals, just to name a few, have anything that could be defined as real intelligence.  They ascribe their smarts and clear acts of empathy to simply 'instincts'.   
  • Scientists, industry, and governments have a vested interest for underestimating animal intelligence, and so they pretend to justify the horrible treatment animals receive in science labs, farms, abattoirs and in other places where they are tortured for our benefit.  In their view animal suffering does not count because they are of lower intelligence.   
  • Some scientists have gone as far as to say that some animals, such as lobsters who are cooked alive, or fish who die of suffocation, feel no pain.  Research scientists says the same thing about a variety of animals they use in their experiments.   
  • Doctors and advocates of abortion affirm that unborn babies feel no pain, so that it is perfectly ethical to tear them to pieces during abortion procedures.  They make a living that way.   
  • There are degrees of consciousness and degrees of intelligence.  It does not all start and end with humans.  We are just one type of organism in nature's endless process of creating and transforming life.   
  • We all started as star dust, as romantics like to remind us. In other words, as inanimate material.  And then something sparked what we call consciousness in some tiny microscopic creature, and complex life took off.

  • We continue to be surprised by new revelations about the life of plants and trees.  Far from just being mindless life forms, they have extraordinary abilities to communicate with their environment, to form alliances with other plants and trees, and with animals as well, and to successfully fight off a variety of threats.  When you look at the overall picture, it is obvious that they have intelligence, although in a form that is adapted to their needs.

  • They evidently can transmit, receive, and interpret information.

  • It sounds incredible, but when you discover how trees talk to each other, feel pain, nurture each other, even care for their close relatives and organise themselves into communities, it's hard to be sceptical.
  • Forests are super-organisms, much like ant colonies.
  • Research shows trees can distinguish the roots of their own species from other plants, and even pick out their own relations from other trees.
  • Some are so tightly connected at the roots that they even die together, like a devoted married couple.
  • Diseased or hungry individuals can be identified, supported and nourished until they recover.
  • Trees can also send warnings using chemical signals and electrical impulses through the fungal networks that stretch under the soil between sets of roots — networks known as the 'wood wide web'.

  • For example, elms and pines call on parasitic wasps that lay their eggs inside leaf-eating caterpillars, condemning them to slow, painful deaths. Trees are prepared to wait for revenge.
  • The main reason humans cannot perceive how clever and complex they are is because we exist in such short time scales by comparison.  Some trees live for thousands of years. 
  • But the main reason is just plain human arrogance.  We can't conceive that other life forms are capable of thinking and of helping their friends.

If that's true — and my experience as a forester convinces me it is — then they must be able to store and transmit information. 
 
And scientists are beginning to ask: is it possible that trees possess intelligence, and memories, and emotions? So, to cut to the quick, do trees have brains?
 
It sounds incredible, but when you discover how trees talk to each other, feel pain, nurture each other, even care for their close relatives and organise themselves into communities, it's hard to be sceptical.

I didn't always feel this way. In fact, when I began as a civil servant with the German forestry commission in the Eighties, I knew next to nothing about the hidden life of trees.
 
It was my job to look at hundreds of spruces, beeches, oaks and pines every day, to assess their readiness for the lumber mill and their market value.
 
About 20 years ago, while organising survival training and log cabin breaks for tourists, I began to rediscover the love of nature I'd had as a six-year-old.
 
Next, I noticed that visitors were enchanted by crooked, gnarled trees — ones that I would have dismissed because of their low commercial value.
 
I began to pay attention to more than just the quality of the trunks. I noticed bizarre roots, strangely intertwined branches, mossy cushions on bark . . . all kinds of wonders. Including, unbelievably, evidence of tree friendships.

PhytlSignsQuite frankly, the sound of plant chatter could drive you CRAZY.  Just listen to it once.  But plant scientists are going gaga over their botanic babies' ability to speak, or so they say.
 
Reporter:  My peace lily starts to behave oddly around mid-morning. It suddenly becomes more animated, with the speaker emitting excited whoops and wobbles. It makes me jump, and I wonder what’s going on in there.
 
Scientist:  “Having thousands of plant lovers observing their plants and recording their signals will mean we can go much faster in understanding plants”.   (There is one born every minute ....)

I’m concentrating at my computer when my peace lily lets out a wail. It’s a wavering electric howl that finishes as abruptly as it began. But what does it mean?

Nigel Wallbridge doesn’t know, but he wants to find out. He’s a co-founder of Vivent, the company whose device is giving my peace lily an electronic voice. His hope is that this new way of tracking plant activity will help us to understand and manage them better.

The device, called PhytlSigns, measures voltage in plants using two electrodes, one inserted into the soil and the other attached to a leaf or stem. When the speaker squeals, it means the voltage is changing: the higher the wail, the faster the change.

  • Molecular plant scientist Anthony Trewavas' work is making scientists reassess their outmoded definitions of intelligence. 
  • Scientists who find signs of intelligence in plants have met with stiff resistance from the scientific establishment.
  • They can influence research by denying funding for research on items they disagree with.
  • Most scientists seem fixated on defining intelligence according to human standards.
  • But animals have their own ways of expressing intelligence and even using tools that are completely different to those of humans.  They use other organs too, such as their beaks, high sense of smell, and such.
  • Climbing and carnivorous plants demonstrate qualities that are similar to animal intelligence.
  • Plant intelligence needs to be assessed in terms of how they use what they have in order to solve problems.  If they don't have hands, they use tendrils, for example.
  • A scientist defines intelligence as the ability to solve problems, and plants are good at that.
  • Plant intelligence does not need a brain.  It relies on a network.
  • A now discredited book The Secret Life of Plants (1973) did considerable damage to advanced plant research.  Its claims could not be duplicated, leading to much ridicule. 
  • Reaction to that book elicited self-censorship among plant researchers and set back studies exploring the possible similarities between neurobiology and plant biology for decades.
  • But scientists kept finding evidence that plants may be intelligent and capable of cognition, communication, information processing, computation, learning, and memory.

  • So in 2006 a group of scientists published a denunciation of self-censorship in this particular field of plant research, and the field of Plant Neurobiology was born.
  • The authors pointed out that electrical and chemical signalling systems have been identified in plants which are equivalent to those found in the nervous systems of animals.
  • Plants are able to sense and respond to light, water, gravity, temperature, soil structure, nutrients, toxins, microbes, herbivores, and chemical signals from other plants.  This could not be done without an informational processing system.
  • The scientific establishment struck back, not by denying the facts but by disagreeing in their interpretation.
  • Unable to move, plants have developed unique resources.
  • A key characteristic is its modularity.  Plants can lose up to 90% of their body without being killed. 
  • Their state of being rooted to the ground, and still overcome all kinds of challenges, is called the sessile life style - and it is a highly developed one.
  • Plants have evolved between 15 and 20 senses, some of them analogous to our own five senses.

  • The tips of plant roots, in addition to sensing gravity, moisture, light, pressure, and hardness, can also sense volume, nitrogen, phosphorus, salt, various toxins, microbes, and chemical signals from neighboring plants.
  • Roots can tell whether nearby roots are self or other and, if other, kin or stranger. 
  • They perceive competitors and grow away from them.
  • If competitors are planted together in a pot, they get along and share resources.
  • Plants have their own language and are great biochemists. 
  • Unable to run away, they deploy a complex molecular vocabulary to signal distress, deter or poison enemies, and recruit animals to perform various services for them.
  • They can get useful insects hooked on their drugs.
  • They use chemical warfare to deal with enemies.
  • They form alliances with insects that work as bodyguards, and have chemical ways of summoning them for help.

  • Plants also exhibit signs of memory, some better than bees memories.
  • That sense we get when we think about what might govern a plant—that there is no wizard behind the curtain pulling the levers—may apply equally well to our brains.
  • The hypothesis that intelligent behavior in plants may be an emergent property of cells exchanging signals in a network might sound far-fetched, yet the way that intelligence emerges from a network of neurons may not be very different. 
  • The definition of memory is another thorny issue.  Plants have memories. 
  • Immune cells “remember” their experience of pathogens, and call on that memory in subsequent encounters.

    In plants, it has long been known that experiences such as stress can affect their genes.
  • This so-called “epigenetic” effect can persist and sometimes be passed down to offspring. 
  • The same happens to animals and humans.
  • Plants live in a different time scale.  Time-lapse photography is perhaps the best tool we have to bridge the chasm between the time scale at which plants live and our own.
  • Another troublesome concept that needs to be reassessed is that of consciousness. 
  • If we define the term simply as the state of being awake and aware of one’s environment, then plants may qualify as conscious beings.
  • Plants can be rendered unconscious by the same anesthetics that put animals out
  • What’s more, when plants are injured or stressed, they produce a chemical—ethylene—that works as an anesthetic on animals.  We can deduct that plants are capable of feeling pain.
  • But it is ok to eat them.  Plants evolved to be eaten.

No one likes a mouthful of sand. Even that single speck of grit that crunches in your molars after a day at the beach is maddening. It turns out non-human animals aren’t fans of eating sand either. That’s why certain plants use sticky hairs to coat themselves in layers of grit. For keeping hungry animals away, it works like a charm.

In the History Channel documentary series Life After People (for sale on DVD) there is a segment showing how in a world without people the Kudzu plant would rapidly take over large parts of the southern US destroying the native foliage and completely covering empty buildings and abandoned cars.

  • Pueraria lobate (also known as kudzu), is the world's most aggressive and invasive plant species
  • Kudzu mounts other plants and engulfs areas with darkness, killing all other greenery in its path.
  • Vines can grow as much as 2 feet (61cm) a day in summer months. Attaching to a tree, pole, fence or building, kudzu can grow up to 80 feet (24m) high.
  • Feature Shoot reports that the plant is originally from China but was given as a gift to the Americas from Japan at the Japanese pavilion in the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.
  • Horticulturists became fascinated by the beautiful plant and began growing it in their gardens near roads and railway tracks.
  • Kudzu contributes to the production of ozone.  It produces isoprene and nitric oxide, which, when combined with nitrogen in the air, form ozone, an air pollutant that causes significant health problems for humans and hinders the growth of many kinds of other plants, including crops.
  • Its spread is currently limited to vegetative expansion by runners and rhizomes and by vines that root at the nodes to form new plants.
  • Kudzu also spreads through seeds, which are contained in pods that mature in the fall.

    In a small corner of western Poland, near the town of Gryfino, a strange and eerie woodland exists. This bizarre collection of curved trees, named the “Crooked Forest,” is shrouded in mystery and despite the numerous different theories that have been proposed over the years, no one truly knows what caused the trees to adopt this shape.

    While the US president and other leftist leaders blame the West for climate change (they don't call it global warming anymore), countries in Asia are perpetrating ecological crimes against humanity.
    More than 1.7 million hectares (4.2 million acres) of land has been burned and six provinces severely affected by the haze, according to Indonesia's forestry ministry

    Fires deliberately set by villagers to clear land are raging across Indonesia, creating thick smog that's believed to be the caused of 500,000 respiratory infections.  The government has been in readiness to evacuate victims from haze-affected provinces, while pollution caused by the fires has killed many and caused respiratory illnesses in half a million.
     
    The conditions are so extreme that Sutopo Puro Nugroho, spokesperson for the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recently called the persistent haze a "crime against humanity," adding that 43 million people have been inhaling toxic fumes from the smoke for months.
     
    Innocent animals are being victimized
    A few days ago I posted an article on Indonesia deliberately setting forests on fire to clear land, and then attacking defenseless orangutans who try to flee to safety.   It was the heartbreaking story of a starving mother orangutan with a baby reaching a village only to be stoned by villagers.

    An endangered Borneo orangutan and its baby escaped from raging fires in Indonesia that destroyed their forest habitat - only to be attacked by angry villagers.  
     
    The malnourished mother and youngster, called Gito, were found distressed and clinging to one another as locals hurled rocks at them and tried to tie them up before they were saved by International Animal Rescue (IAC).  Read more here
     
    Indonesia's forest fires threaten a third of endangered orangutans.  Fires have spread beyond plantations deep into primary forests and national parks, the last strongholds of the endangered apes.
     
    But not much is being reported about Indonesia's ongoing practice of setting fire to the forests, with the resulting destruction of trees, animals' habitat and animals themselves, and the poisoning of the air with smoke that make people ill, not only in Indonesia but in many other parts of Southeast Asia.

    Many apes have fled their forest homes which have been engulfed by fires lit to clear land, only to be attacked by villagers, who regard them as pests.
