  • Easy Now! Cat Gently Pets Feathered Friend
    Cat petting a feathered friend
Humans, in an effort to convince ourselves that we are better than other animals, have always tried to come up with reasons why we belong in a separate and superior category.
  • We are capable of speech and animals are not, we said, until Koko the gorilla learned sign language.  Alex the parrot too learned to communicate using human speech correctly.
  • Polar bear petting a dog
We are capable of higher mental functions and animals are not, we said, until dolphins proved they are almost as intelligent as humans.  They just lack opposable thumbs.
  • Cat and dog owners can affirm with certainty that their pets can process complex ideas, think for themselves, and help humans in many situations.
  • We are capable of compassion and empathy in a way animals are not, we claimed.   But animals prove again and again that they can establish loving friendships with animals of other species, care for them and protect them.
  • We usually call a brutal person an "animal".   But this is so wrong and so unfair.  Humans are definitely worse than animals when it comes to cruelty against other species and against our own.  Humans engage in mass murder, sadism, and depravity, while animals do not.
In the following video you will see how a cat gently pets a bird - a housemate and friend obviously - with such tenderness.

Shayne said: 'Normally this would never happen and this is something I have never seen before as long as I have been around polar bears'

Winter waltz: Photographer captures young polar bears dancing in the snow and even sharing a KISS as they show affection to one another
  • Two polar bear cubs, aged one and three years old, looked to be dancing hand-in-hand and then shared a kiss
  • The cubs were passing time while their mothers were hunting. After a few minutes she returned with food
  • Photographer Shayne McGuire caught the images in Alaska and said their movements mirrored each other
  • When food is scarce, usually in the summer, larger polar bears have been known to kill and eat their own kind

A surprising moment of affectionate friendship in the life of a ruthless predator.  Polar bears have a reputation as one the fiercest predator species in the Arctic, but that didn’t stop this bear from sharing a touching moment with a dog in northern Manitoba on Saturday.

David De Meulles, a tour guide for North Star Tours in Churchill, Man., uploaded a short video of the rare encounter to YouTube on Wednesday. The incredible clip shows a large polar bear lift its huge paw over a dog calmly lying down on some rocks near the icy water.

  • A mother polar bear delighted crowds at Russia's Novosibirsk Zoo, as she played with her newborn cub Shila.
  • Although polar bears can be fearsome, mother bear Gerda could not have seemed more gentle as she let the newborn clamber all over her as they rolled in the snow.
  • The enchanting moment was captured by photographer Kirill Kukhmar, as Gerda showed off her new baby to onlookers.
Play fighting: Although polar bears can be highly dangerous, mother Gerda could not have been more gentle with her tiny newborn cub

That's a bear-back ride! Cute polar bear cub clings on for dear life as he hitches a lift on his mum's back
  • Photographer Daisy Gilardini waited for 117 hours to capture the images in Wapusk National Park, Canada
  • She had to contend with winds of 70km/h outside the den
  • The cub was on one of its first trips outside the den, and the pair were presumably foraging for food

  • Who are you looking at! Photographer Daisy Gilardini spent nearly two weeks waiting in front of a polar bear den and had to contend with winds gusting to 60-70km/h.
The four-month-old baby bear must have had some tired paws as it opted for a ride instead of walking during what was one of its first trips out of the den.

Babies' first snow: Over-excited polar bear cubs caught on camera playfighting with each other and climbing all over mom

Wildlife photographer Andy Skillen spent two days tracking the bears at the Wapusk National Park, Manitoba, Canada.

He found a mother bear introducing two newborn cubs to the joys of playing in the snow.  The bears were emerging from the time when the pregnant bear hides in a hole to give birth and care for the newborns.  After fasting for a long time the mother was anxious to hunt.  But it was not so easy with two cubs in tow.

Drowsy: According to Mr Skillen, the polar bears had recently resurfaced after spending the winter in hibernation

Cosy: The two young cubs use their mother as a form of protection from the worst of the elements
