Cat petting a feathered friend

Humans, in an effort to convince ourselves that we are better than other animals, have always tried to come up with reasons why we belong in a separate and superior category.
We are capable of speech and animals are not, we said, until Koko the gorilla learned sign language. Alex the parrot too learned to communicate using human speech correctly.

We are capable of higher mental functions and animals are not, we said, until dolphins proved they are almost as intelligent as humans. They just lack opposable thumbs.
Cat and dog owners can affirm with certainty that their pets can process complex ideas, think for themselves, and help humans in many situations.
We are capable of compassion and empathy in a way animals are not, we claimed. But animals prove again and again that they can establish loving friendships with animals of other species, care for them and protect them.
We usually call a brutal person an "animal". But this is so wrong and so unfair. Humans are definitely worse than animals when it comes to cruelty against other species and against our own. Humans engage in mass murder, sadism, and depravity, while animals do not.

I personally don't like Halloween, but I could not resist these cute pictures of dogs all dressed up in costumes. At the All Dogs Matter Halloween Dog Walk in London pooches of all breeds donned their best spooky looks. The annual charity is a hit with dog owners and dog lovers in general. ....... Not sure what the dogs think about the whole undignified affair.

Within hours of the massacre 17 therapy dogs and their handlers were getting ready for their trip to Las Vegas. The group was coordinated by Lutheran Churches Charities, LCC. There were deployed to help victims of the Las Vegas shooting in a therapeutic capacity. The lovable mutts have been visiting survivors such as the ones in Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.

Tim Hetzner, founder of the K-9 Comfort Dog Ministries told ABC news, "the great thing about the dogs, they're unconditional, confidential and safe." He also told ABC that the dogs themselves are sensitive to people's emotional needs. "Dogs have an incredible sense of when somebody is hurting," he said, "they'll just come and lay themselves into somebody's lap."

Detroit, MI – Nikita Smith filed a lawsuit against the Detroit Police Department after they killed her three dogs during a raid of her home in search of pot last year. On Wednesday, a judge absurdly ruled the dogs were considered “contraband,” noting that Smith had no legal basis to sue the police department for shooting and killing her dogs, due to the canines not having been properly licensed.

Subsequently, the federal civil rights lawsuit filed by Smith after a raid of her home by the Detroit police was dismissed by U.S. District Court Judge George Caram Steeh.

The search warrant for Smith’s residence came after police received a tip that marijuana was being sold out of the home. The raid, which killed her three dogs, netted a total of 25 grams of marijuana – not even an ounce.

Most dogs and cats act as therapy animals. Other than dogs with jobs, the rest of them are companions, and therefore they play a key role in our mental health. They are children's best friends, and sometimes they are the elderly's reason for getting up in the morning.
These wonderful creatures deserve better than being the target of the global warming pseudo-science, which has been proven fraudulent time and again.
Earth's climate has been changing, sometimes abruptly and dramatically, for the past 4.5 BILLION years. This is part of the normal evolution of the planet, and the causes are as varied as the sun's weather, and Earth's geology itself.

ACCORDING TO CLIMATE CHANGE SCIENTISTS: Think before you give Lucky and Tiger another mouthful! They may look cute and affectionate, your dog and your cat, but at heart, they are ravening planet-destroying creatures whose insatiable appetite for meat and deadly feces threatens to kill us all with deadly global warming.

Those are the conclusions of a study from UCLA’s Institute of the Environment and Sustainability on the Environmental impacts of food consumption by dogs and cats. According to the study, by geography professor Gregory S. Okin, the 163 million cats and dogs in the U.S. alone eat so much meat that if they were a country they would be the fifth largest meat consumer after Russia, Brazil, the U.S., and China. Also, they produce 5.1 million tons of feces — the same as is produced by 90 million human Americans.

Indeed, 25 to 30 percent of the environmental impact of meat consumption in the United States is created by cats and dogs. Their carbon footprint — about 64 million tons of carbon dioxide each year — allegedly has the same “climate impact as a year’s worth of driving from 13.6 million cars.” The report’s author insists that he isn’t literally suggesting that America should have a mass pet cull:

“I like dogs and cats, and I’m definitely not recommending that people get rid of their pets or put them on a vegetarian diet, which would be unhealthy.”

Hmm. It’s the half of him that’s not joking that I think should worry us.

Cats modulate their vocalizations to express themselves.
OK, pets don't have an extensive vocabulary, but half a dozen words in 'cattish' or 'doggish' help pets get what they want, be it a specific food or treat or other needs.
Talk to your cat or dog as you would talk to a toddler. Make sentences very short and clear, and repeat them daily. You will see how he will quickly learn their meaning, and how to respond to you or to make requests of his own.

Time Magazine - Researchers in Hungary have investigated and recorded the brain activity of dogs, confirming that they not only understand the words we speak, but also how we say them.

In another study 40 volunteers listened to different growls recorded from 18 dogs. Overall, participants correctly classified 63 per cent of the growl samples.

Women were better than men at recognising when a dog was being playful or threatening, or feeling fear, scientists discovered.

Will Gibb says he didn't realize it was a cougar that had caught his beloved pet husky by the neck until after he pummelled the wild animal in the head.

"I wasn't really analyzing it too much at the time," Gibb said. "All that was going through my mind is that I had to protect my dog.

"It was just very instinctual. My dogs are like my children."

The Red Deer man was meeting a friend for coffee at the Whitecourt Tim Hortons on Dec. 26, when he let his two dogs Sasha and Mongo out into the parking lot for a short run.

Within seconds, he said he heard Sasha, the female of the pair, start yelping. A cougar had emerged from the woods nearby and pounced, he said.

"She (Sasha) was crying out in pain and distress so I went running," said Gibb, a 31-year-old technician. "And I saw something wrapped around her so I ran up and punched it in the side of the head.

"At that point I realized it was a cougar."

* Even after they were rescued, they remained snuggled together in car boot on the way to the vets.

A collection of more than 120 photographs has been released showing different breeds in mid air. They were dropped from a small height by their owners as the images were taken by Julia Christe. In some cases a wind machine was used to make pictures of long-haired dogs dramatic.

Julia began her Flying Dogs project as a student in Berlin in 2006 and was then commissioned to do a series of similar photos for an advertising campaign for a veterinary product
