Opportunistic post-war Europeans - without being particularly contrite about their crimes and complicity during World War II - used the horrors of that conflict to push their own agenda. Thus you have seen an implementation of liberal and leftist social polities, and the weakening of whatever moral values were still left after the 20th century upheavals.
A strange type of liberal oppressiveness was instituted where dissenters are shunned and coerced to conform to the liberal agenda. Any questioning of that doctrine is immediately slapped with the accusation of "intolerance". The "tolerant left" became frighteningly intolerant.
Patriotism was thrown out the window and the European Union took on the role of benevolent dictator, with unelected bureaucracy smothering the will of the people in the name of "the good of the many," as interpreted by the same unelected EU functionaries. Good bye, democracy. Good bye individualism. Good bye national cultures.

One, that the number of people in need runs in the billions: It includes most of Africa, Asia, Latin America. Two, that no matter how much we try to deceive ourselves in this regard, we are essentially tribal beings.

We like to be with our own and distrust those who are different. This is a fact of life for people of all races, colors, nationalities, religions, and cultures. And when you have a mix, you have conflict. Ask the Syrians, ask the Irish, ask South African blacks (who mistreat other African immigrants), ask anyone.
Some people will firmly reject this notion. You will notice that they are generally people who are comfortable, somewhat shielded from reality.
And as soon as there is economic distress in a society, these resentments immediately flare up.

BRITISH LABOUR'S DECEIT
Britain has the most outrageous case of leftist deceit of the electorate. The Labour party deliberately lied to the voters about their immigration policies. They completely misrepresented it, and they got away with it.
A Labour insider exposed his party immigration policy as one intended to demographically and culturally change the country in such a profound manner, that it would result in a pool of voters to keep Labour in power indefinitely. (See article below.)

The political arrogance of liberally-minded politicians has now produced a rise in support for the far right National Front of Marie Le Pen, which is the only one, it seems, willing to listen to the people.
