SUSPECT ARRESTED IN ARSON OF MANCHESTER DOG HOME HAD PLAYED AT BEING GOOD SAMARITAN DURING THE FIRE - sticking around to enjoy the thrill of the tragedy

At least one other youth has been interviewed as a potential witness to the alleged arson attack as police consider action to protect families of suspects

A boy suspected of torching of Manchester Dogs’ Home was at the scene of the fire when police arrived - and directed officers to the seat of the blaze.

Officers believe he may have been playing at being a Good Samaritan and getting a thrill out of watching firefighters arrive at the scene as the tragedy unfolded.

The youngster had vanished by the time an officer emerged from the burning building in Harpurhey but is believed he returned about 40 minutes later.

The youth is one of a handful police suspect may have played a role in the fire. A 15-year-old boy was arrested and video-interviewed on suspicion of arson before being released on bail while enquiries continue. He is due to return to a police station on Monday.

It is understood he had to be restrained by police officers when he struggled with police in the cells while he was in custody. At least one other youth has been video-interviewed as a potential witness to the fire and more could follow. Meanwhile police have serious concerns about possible vigilante attacks against the family of the boy who has been arrested and others as emotions run high.

At least 43 dogs and possibly as many as 60 died in Thursday night’s blaze. It is understood police forensic experts have encountered horrific scenes inside the kennels, with evidence that many of the dogs had tried in vain to escape the fire and fumes. Senior officers have instigated a ‘safeguarding plan’ for the families of the suspect and other boys who are being questioned about the fire. It could lead to those families being moved out of Harpurhey.

Owner reunites with her adopted dog she was due to pick up at the burned facility

'I thought Leo was dead': The moment Dawn discovered her two-year-old bichon frisé had been saved from dogs' home fire.

This is the moment a mother-of-four broke down in tears as she was reunited with the dog she thought had died in a devastating fire at a city kennels.

Dawn Bradbury, 29, was convinced her two-year-old bichon frisé, Leo, had been killed at the Manchester Dogs' Home blaze which claimed the lives of more than 60 animals.

Overwhelmed staff have warned people to stay away after animal lovers trying to donate food and blankets brought the M6 to a standstill around Warrington earlier today.

Ms Bradbury was due to collect her pet on Friday after he was found wandering the streets by a local dog warden earlier in the week. But a fire broke out on Thursday night, believed to have been started by an arsonist. She raced to the scene fearing the worst after being told that Leo was being kept in adoption row.

'I have been awake all night and haven't slept. I spent all night down at the dogs' home to try and locate him, it was horrendous,' she told The Telegraph.

'I have four kids here and they are all screaming and crying for him. The kids were all over him when we got him back. We are absolutely delighted. I stayed there most of the night just praying that he would be ok and pestering the wardens and police for news.

'Eventually I had to go home because I was convinced he had died. I found out he was in Block Five which is where the fire was. It is a miracle and we have been crying tears of joy all day. There were two other Bichon Frises who could have been Leo and I have promised to adopt them both. I could not leave therm there after all that has happened.'

Firefighters said the 150 dogs rescued from the blaze at 7pm on Thursday had been moved to a sister site, Cheshire Dogs' Home.
