Given Imaging (Yoqneam, Israel) has received FDA clearance for the latest PillCam SB 3 gastrointestinal imaging technology.
The new generation PillCam capsule endoscopy now features a variable frame rate, automatically recognizing the speed at which it’s moving and adjusting the camera to shoot between 2 and 6 frames a second.
Additionally, new optics promises to improve imaging and should help physicians identify lesions and other morphological irregularities.
Given is claiming that the new technologies improve the resolution over previous models of the PillCam by 30%. The SB 3 also comes with new software for video compression and presentation, allowing for faster and more intuitive review of what the camera captured.
The whole thing is 11 mm x 26 mm and weighs in at less than four grams.
According to Given Imaging, the PillCam SB 3 is indicated “to detect and monitor small bowel abnormalities associated with Crohn’s disease, obscure gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding and iron deficiency anemia.”
