Waiting for his fur to regrow and to be tortured again |
The horrific truth of the angora fur industry is revealed in shocking images from a Chinese workshop.
The rabbits are tied up and stretched out before workers rip out the fur by hand, leaving the rabbits bleeding in their cages.
In a video recorded by PETA in China, where 90 per cent of the world's angora fur is sourced, the animals can be heard screaming in pain.
The animals are kept for two to five years, with their fur being yanked out every two-three months, according to PETA Asia.
When the fur has been plucked, the animals are thrown into tiny cages to recover and regrow their skin in complete solitude.

NOTE
The caption on one of the pictures says:
Torture: The Chinese fur traders use the plucking technique as it results in better quality fur and more money
The "better quality fur" is the reason why dogs, cats and other animals are skinned while still alive.

The film is horrible, BUT...please be aware of the following:
ReplyDelete--It is possible to harvest Angora wool humanely, both with and without restraint of the animal.
--Properly done (NOT shown on the PETA video), the rabbit is tied for restraint with care and is not harmed by doing so (see YouTube under Angora Rabbit Shearing in NZ).
--Not all Angora fiber comes from China.
--As a long-time rabbit professional, the odds are good that the breed of Angora shown is not compatible with the method of harvest; different breeds have different molt patterns, with German Angora requiring shearing every three months as it does not molt, and French, Satin, and most English Angoras molting on various schedules according to their bloodline. Good breeders and producers know this and work with their rabbits accordingly.
--This film is a hideous representation of a very limited sample of Chinese production, most likely shot in one or two barns at most.
--No producer who wants 'better quality wool' would ever harvest in this manner, as ripping the wool out when it is not ready results in abrupt and continued decline in the number of follicles and the quality of the wool which grows in.
--Bear in mind that the UK news article states that the feet of these animals are cruelly cut by wire, but that in no part of the video are wire floors seen--they're all on slatted floors, which are better support for the feet but much harder to keep clean.
--Wire floors, by the way, are considered ideal for most rabbits if of the correct diameter wire and supported properly. Angoras moreso than most are best served by wire floors, as they have the most foot padding and it does the best job of keeping the coat clean and dry.
--Rabbit breeders producing Angora are some of the most dedicated people I've ever met, grooming their rabbits constantly (it's a never-ending task in most barns) and ensuring that they are healthy and well-kept.
Please don't let PETA alone guide your impression of Angora; it's misleading and considerably inaccurate to think that all Angora is produced in this manner, even in China.
