Le Pen:  The French want to regain control of their own country. They want to determine the course of their own economy and their immigration policies. They want their own laws to take precedence over those of the European Union. The French have understood that the EU does not live up to the utopia they were sold. It has distanced itself significantly from a democratic mode of operation.

ISRAELI ARABS FIND ISRAEL A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE - THE FALSE CHARGE OF APARTHEID

Druze is a faction of Islam

JERUSALEM—An annual survey of Arabs in Israel directed by a Haifa University sociologist shows they are self-identifying as Israeli Arabs rather than as Palestinians in greater numbers and increasingly believe Israel is a good place to live.

 

According to the Israeli news website, Nana 10, a research team headed by Prof. Sammy Smooha found that 52.8 percent of the 700 Arabs polled in 2013 accepted Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish-majority state compared to 47.4 percent the year before. One of the major reasons for the breakdown in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority has been the Authority’s refusal to accept Israel’s demand that the Palestinians acknowledge Israel as a Jewish state.

 

The poll also found that 63.5 percent of Arabs in the country considered Israel “a good place to live.” This compares to 58.5 percent in 2012.

 

There was a substantial rise in the percentage of those who identified themselves as “Israeli Arabs” rather than as Palestinians, according to the poll results: from 32.5 percent in 2012 to 42.5 percent last year.

 

The violence afflicting neighboring countries as a result of the Arab Spring may have played a role in the increasingly positive attitude among Israeli Arabs towards Israel, which has remained remarkably stable among the turmoil. 

 



ISRAELI SUPREME COURT JUSTICE - ARAB

Smooha has conducted an annual poll monitoring Arab-Jewish relations in Israel since 2003. The results sometimes show a wide disparity between general Arab opinion and that of the Arab political leadership in the country.

 

The latter, Smooha notes, adamantly opposes government proposals that Arab youths, who are exempt from military service, perform instead national service such as working in hospitals. National service is an option for Jewish youths who do not serve in the army for physical or conscientious reasons. While more than 70 percent of Arab youths and parents polled favored such a program, Smooha said, the political leadership feared a blurring of Arab identity and acceleration of the Israelization process among Arab youths.

 

The results of the Haifa University poll among Israeli Arabs echo the results of American-sponsored poll in 2011, carried out by the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion in Bethlehem, which found that 35 percent of East Jerusalem Arabs, given the option of living in a Palestinian state or Israel, would choose Israel. Only 30 percent said they would prefer Palestine.

 

The remainder said they did not know or declined to answer. Those who preferred Israeli citizenship cited pragmatic matters such as better job opportunities, health care, welfare, unemployment payments, and overall stability.

Wealth flowed during the 1880s and 90s, but only to the upper echelons of society. A vast gulf opened between rich and poor, earning this era the nickname "the Gilded Age." One immigrant photographer captured what it was like for New York's poor during this time, and his images remain arresting today.

 

The Danish-born carpenter Jacob Riis (1849-1914) migrated to the US in 1870. He started his career as a journalist in 1873 as a police reporter, only three years after he arrived in New York. Later he became the city editor of the New York Tribune.

 

When flash photography was born in 1887, he and three photographer friends began to photograph the slums of New York City and three years later he published How the Other Half Lives: Studies Among the Tenements of New York with more than a hundred photographs.

 

Later he wrote some other books, but none of those could approach the success of How the Other Half Lives.

Astonishing photographs show the apocalyptic scene of an 80mph dust storm which killed five people and injured 30 more.  The storm struck yesterday in Iran's capital Tehran, blacking out the sun in a swirling cloud for several minutes and tearing down trees.  

 

It also caused a chain-reaction crash involving 20 vehicles on a highway south of the capital - and international flights were cancelled.  Air traffic controllers diverted several flights and heavy winds also engulfed parts of central Iran, but no casualties were reported there. 

 

Children and the elderly, as well as those with heart problems, were told to remain indoors - but some 50,000 homes suffered power cuts.  The storm hit at 5.30pm local time (2pm BST), and the temperature fell from 33C (91F) to 23C (73F) as it blew through from the desert.  While sandstorms are common in many parts of the Middle East, 'haboob' storms like yesterday's are unusual in Tehran.

MONKEY BELLA ESCAPES ZOO ENCLOSURE TO LOOK FOR HER BELOVED BOYFRIEND MALINO - Not even an electric fence could keep this besotted macaque away from her love - She managed to short the power and get through.

Bella, a female Sulawesi crested black macaque, was upset Malino had been moved to a separate enclosure at Durrell Wildlife Park in Jersey, UK, the Western Daily Press reported.  This prompted her to hatch a scheme to escape with some of her fellow monkeys.

 

After managing to get away on several occasions officials at the zoo set up an electric fence, but this proved to be no match for the wily macaque.  Bella was able to break through the barrier using a wet blade of grass to short the power.

 

A second electric fence was also erected but the monkey used the same method to get past it.  ‘These monkeys are extremely intelligent and Bella had learned this either by trial and error or by watching another monkey do it,’ said the Wildlife Park’s spokesman Rick Jones.

Sadly Bella was not reunited with Malino but staff hoped she would turn her attention to a new dominant male, Kato, when he was brought in.

BRITISH MUSLIM BEHEADS SWAN - Wave of beheaded swans in Britain

June 2014 - "Hasan Fidan, 46, was arrested after angler Bob Morris handed the photo in to police, showing Fidan at a beauty spot in Hildenborough, Kent.

 

Police are believed to have found the swan, chopped into pieces and jammed into Fidan's freezer, when they traced him to his home in Tonbridge.

 British police look for killers of several beheaded swans

 

April 2014 - Police are searching for the person who cut the heads off three swans and left them lying opposite a pub.  The severed heads of the three birds were found by anglers close to Mount Farm Lake near Milton Keynes, Bucks.

 

Steven Cooper, the club's fisheries officer and secretary, discovered the first head lying on the lakeside.  He said anglers had noticed swans had been "disappearing" from the waterway in recent months.  He said: "I've been a member of the club for 10 years, but have never known anything like this. I was out one afternoon and the head was just lying there by the waterside opposite The Inn On The Lake pub.

 

"Anyone could have come across it - a runner, someone walking their dogs, a small child. It was horrible. We have found three heads, and one of them had the body close by it. It doesn't look like it was done by an animal, it was a sharp blade that took the heads off.

THE WORM-EATING PLANT - Plant uses underground leaves to trap and digest roundworms

Scientists have unraveled the mystery behind why Philcoxia—a spiny, purple-flowered plant located in Brazil—grows its leaves underground. The plant, now known to be carnivorous, survives by absorbing and eating tiny worms that it traps on its spiny leaves.

 

Philcoxia thrives in sand patches located on the Campos Rupestres savanna in Brazil’s central highlands. Until now, scientists have been puzzled as to how Philcoxia was able to survive in such a nutrient-poor environment with only a taproot for taking water and no root system to absorb nutrients.

 

Plant ecologist Rafael Oliveira of the University of Campinas in São Paulo, Brazil, and colleagues were aware that Philcoxia’s leaves were able to photosynthesize despite being covered by soil, but they got their first hints about how it absorbs nutrients when analyzing its one-millimeter-wide leaves under an electron microscope.  Upon inspection, they found that Philcoxia’s leaves have structures resembling the sticky glands seen in other carnivorous plant species. In addition, tiny round worms called nematodes were seen on the leaves.

VOLCANOES BLUE FIRE - VOLCANOES ERUPT IN STUNNING BRIGHT BLUE LIGHT

It may look like a scene from another planet or some high-tech Hollywood special effects – but this volcano venting bright blue flames is a real, rarely-seen phenomenon of nature.  Photographer Olivier Grunewald captured it in the stunning picture above of the Kawah Ijen volcano in Indonesia, first published in National Geographic.

The glowing, electric-blue flames are caused by combustion of sulfuric gases. The gases vent from cracks in the volcano with high pressure and temperatures reaching up to 600 degrees Celsius (1,112 degrees Fahrenheit). Once they come in contact with the air, the gases ignite, sending flames shooting as much as 16 feet high.  The gases can also condense into liquid sulfur "which continues to burn as it flows down the slopes," said Grunewald, "giving the feeling of lava flowing."

He photographed a similar, spectacular display of color and fire on the Dallol volcano in the Danakil depression, Ethiopia (on the right).  In that case, the heat of the magma ignited sulfur dust in the soil, sparking blue flames. "It is very rare to see that," said Grunewald. "The powder of sulfur could burn for a few days."  Grunewald wore a gas mask while taking pictures to protect himself from the toxic fumes. 

 

Blue volcanic fire has been documented through history. Grunewald says it was described in antiquity on the south slope of Mount Vesuvius in Italy -- the volcano that destroyed Pompeii -- as well as on the island of Vulcano, off the coast of Sicily.

WORLD WAR I - THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE OF 1914 RECREATED - When Germans and British soldiers played football together in France

From the trenches to the beach: The poignant moment that two warring countries united over an impromptu football match is recreated in Teesside to commemorate the Great War. 

The football match spontaneously broke out in No Man's Land in Flanders, France on Christmas Day 1914

It signalled a truce along the Western Front, as British and German soldier lay down their weapons for one day only

After that, the war continued for four years, claiming more than ten millions lives

Now that historic game has been recreated on Saltburn beach, Teesside, to commemorate the Great War 

The two teams dressed up in vintage army uniforms and played the game, which ended up with a 5-2 win to the 'British' side.   There was also a field of 8,000 poppies laid to create a temporary 'war cemetery' in tribute to the fallen. A Tiger Moth plane also flew overhead, scattering 40,000 poppy petals onto the crowds below.

The 1914 game was one of many unofficial ceasefires that took place along the Western Front around Christmas 1914 during that war.   The truce began after a German messenger walked across No Man's Land on Christmas Eve to broker the temporary ceasefire.

EGYPTIANS INSULTED BY THE SIGHT OF ISRAELI WOMEN SOLDIERS

A few days ago, Reuters published a photo essay  of IDF women going through their final training mission before they are officially inducted into the Karakal battalion guarding the Egyptian border.

This didn't sit well with Egypt. Al Masry al-Youm reproduces every single Reuters photo, but writes: 

 

Dr Ahmad Fuad Anwar, an expert on Israeli affairs, professor of Hebrew studies and Zionist thought at Alexandria University, said in response to a question by Al Masry al Youm about the purpose of such images and their publication, especially with the strong cooperation within the Israeli army: "Such a photo series is provocative propaganda ...to serve the Israeli army."

Fouad adds that [for Israel] to allow the Reuters photographer to enter the training mission of Caracal and accompany them during the whole day are [it accomplished] several goals, the first of which may be to tarnish the image of the Egyptian side, especially with the facts of several incidents of [Egyptian] live fire on African infiltrators which killed them.

 He pointed out that the Egyptian side deals with infiltrators using three methods, namely: hotels, prisons, and deportation, and this depends on the way the infiltrator engages with the troops, and while the Israelis are delivering a message to the world that they are recruiting women to deal with the intruders as they are always considered civilians.

Fouad called on the Egyptian side to officially complain to the famous Reuters agency about such images in the Western media, as well as to request the Israeli side to refrain from provocations by releasing such images, and Fouad added that religious Israeli soldiers refuse to work near the women's camps, and he wondered "Should the Egyptian side object to the presence a of battalion on the common border that is two-thirds women?"

D-Day on June 6, 1944, marked the start of the European invasion during the Second World War.  Thousands of allied troops landed on French beaches initiating efforts to liberate Europe from Nazi occupation.  In total 75,215 British and Canadian troops and 57,500 US troops were landed by sea on D-Day

BEAR POWER NAP - Bear climbs up electricity pylon and falls asleep, after being chased up there by dogs - Climbed down all by himself

The black bear nodded off after escaping a pack of dogs by clambering up the pole near Shellbrook in Saskatchewan, Canada. 

 

Clearly tired after the ordeal he curled up on top the pole and slowly drifted off.   The moment was captured as SaskPower energy crews arrived on scene and began trying to figure out how to get the bear down without causing a power outage.  Thankfully theanimal woke up and made its own way down after catching a few winks.
