Public appearance at the Genoa Aquarium was one of the baby's first, and proud mum didn't take her eyes off him

Manatees are endangered and the baby is the only newborn in the country, and only 10 zoos in Europe house them

In the wild, manatees are found off America's east coast, in the River Amazon and off the west coast of Africa

Although they are protected by laws, most manatee deaths are caused by loss of habitat and collisions with boats

Calves are born underwater, and the mother must help her vulnerable calf to the surface so it can take its first breath.

But infants can typically swim by themselves after only an hour.

The baby manatee will be dependent on its mum for up to two years, during which time she will nurse it.

The beautiful creatures spend almost all of their time eating, resting and travelling, and have to eat around 10-15 per cent of their body weight in vegetation every day.

But if mum is anything to go by, baby is going to need to eat a lot of vegetation to give him the energy for all that growing.
