Research has also found that Orcas, or killer whales – around 26ft in length and weighing more than six tonnes – carefully butcher the prey underwater, cooperating as they skin and dissect the seals.

The get-away paid off for the seal, as the whales carried on searching for around 20 minutes before deciding to give up the unsuccessful mission.

The drama took place in Desolation Sound, British Columbia, Canada
