A MOMENT OF BEAUTY - PHOTOGRAPHS OF BALLET DANCERS IN REAL WORLD SETTINGS

Claire Unabia: This is the first photograph Dane Shitagi took for the Ballerina Project, back in 1994 in Manoa Falls, HonoluluWe are being swamped with so many images and words of violence and horror that we need to take a break for beauty.

Here is an article I posted months ago that will bring associations of calm and creativity.

It's perfectly OK to retreat into our inner world when the one outside is just too deranged to tolerate.  That's one reason why there are so many pictures of animals on this blog.  Animals' goodness and innocence keep us sane.

BALLET DANCERS IN MAGICAL POSES IN REAL WORLD SETTINGS

March 10, 2014
Classical ballet is in my opinion the most beautiful art form ever.  So here is a series of pictures of ballerinas posing in real world settings.

The effect is just as magical.  See more pictures.

Helen Ruiz: The ballerina looks at one with the ocean in this twilight image taken in South Beach, Miami

Stephanie Williams: A cubic sculpture makes the perfect frame for the dancer's elegant pose in Brooklyn Bridge Park with the bridge and city skyline rising in the background

Isabella Boylston: Wearing a one-piece with a picture of a ferocious-looking shark on the front, the dancer gracefully prances along Big Beach in Maui

BALLET IS GOOD FOR YOU
Whether you enjoy watching it or practice it yourself.

Ballet - even if you only practice it in the privacy of your home - is excellent for your body and spirit.  There are videos that can coach you on how to strengthen your body for ballet workouts and dance.  However, dancing in your own way in your room while listening to ballet music, or just listening to the music itself can do wonders for your spirit.

The New York City Ballet Workout is probably one of the best training videos available.  There is Part 1 and Part 2.  The videos are also available for purchase on Amazon.

Two of my favorite ballets:
Sylvia - Darcey Bussell
"Sylvia", with Darcey Bussell and Roberto Bolle.

The Nutcracker (1977) Poster

And "The Nutcracker" with the incomparable Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gelsey Kirkland - probably the best performance of this ballet ever.

You can watch it in sections on YouTube starting  here:
