Last year there were 135 incidents of manhole fires, up from just 32 in 2010. That number could rise further this year, with 113 already recorded. In February this year, 50 homes were evacuated in Islington, north London after an electrical fault sent flames ripping through a busy shopping street.

In April last year, a pavement exploded near Victoria Station, narrowly missing pedestrians. And, earlier this month, a number of homes in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire were left without power after residents heard a loud bang and saw flames appearing from a manhole cover.
