A dog stands guard over the body of his dead friend lying by the side of the road in a heart-breaking display of devotion.

Video footage captured by a passer-by shows the dead animal lying close to the kerb having apparently been hit by a passing vehicle.

His caring friend nuzzles up against him at first as if he is trying to wake him up before crouching over the body while keeping a close eye on the traffic going by.

The video, which was posted on LiveLeak yesterday, has already been viewed over 15,000 times. It is believed to have been shot in Sutton, Dublin, however this has not been confirmed
