CHOCOLATE SMELL BOOSTS SALE OF ROMANCE BOOKS IN BOOKSTORES

The scent obviously had an effect on women readers.  So how do you boost the sale of books for male shoppers?  The smell of wood  in a carpentry shop?  Or pizza?  Or the smell of a car motor?  Or that of a new car? 

A previous article I cite below says the smell of fresh bread, that of mown grass or fish and chips could do the trick.
 
Belgium scientists flooded a bookshop with chocolate aroma and found that customers were almost six times more likely to buy a romance novel.  The aroma did not have a big effect on the purchase of other types of books, but it made most customers to linger and browse some more, rising the number of sales of all books during the experiment.  The government-funded study said "The presence of a chocolate scent as a positive influence on general approach behaviour and a negative impact on goal-directed behavior in the store."

Men prefer the smell of frying bacon to that of babies. 
(Of course!)

In a 2009 poll, the whiff of a newborn was only ranked at number 18 in the poll while bacon was seventh and petrol was 12th. 
 
Top of the list was freshly-baked bread followed by clean sheets and freshly mown grass. Fish and chips, roast dinner and fresh coffee also made the list as did fresh air after rainfall. Women picked bread, grass and clean sheets followed by fresh flowers and vanilla as their favourites.
