THE MYSTERIOUS FOREST FLOOR IN CANADA THAT BOUNCES

A HOAX?  MAYBE NOT

The phenomenon, which is thought to be natural, enables people to bounce upon a patch of earth, but scientists are struggling to explain why the ground is behaving as it is.

A pair of hikers came across the unusual spot close to a river in a forest in St Jerome, Quebec in Canada.

Some experts believe the cause of the springy ground is a build-up of roots, while others think it could be a dense patch of peat moss.

An expert from Kew Gardens told Mail Online: 'I have heard that some forestry workers falling from trees in temperate old growth forests have survived thanks to the deep layer of organic matter made of part decomposed leaves, fungal mycelium, other fibrous debris, which can absorb the impact of their fall.'

The creator of the video told io9 the vegetation around the site is still alive and the earth strong enough to hold ‘many people'.

Emeritus Professor Andrew Schofield, from the University of Cambridge’s Geotechnical and Environmental Research Group, told Mail Online that the bouncy ground could possibly be explained by ‘a couple of fallen young trees spanning an hollow, and branches and leaves on top making a platform.‘It could be not a patch of ground at all - it could be natural and not a deliberate hoax.’

Another possibility to explain the phenomenon is soil liquefaction, where the ground sucks up a large quantity of water and becomes like an incredible vicious liquid as it is so waterlogged. But some experts think the conditions do not look like liquefaction, which usually appears like a patch of earth without foliage.

A DOG-OPERATED WASHING MACHINE FOR THE DISABLED

  • The ‘Woof to Wash’ enables specially trained dogs to unlock the machine with a bespoke footpad and start it with a simple WOOF.
  • A doggy footpad and a microphone system have been added which recognise a dog’s bark
  • This means that dogs are able to unlock the machine by pressing the pad with their paw and pull a rope with their mouths to open it
  • Can then close the machine with their nose, before activating it by barking
  • Dogs were trained by the Support Dogs charity - which provides canine assistants for people with disabilities, epileptics and children with autism

OTTERS AND ORANGUTAN TRY TO SOLVE FOOD PUZZLE TOGETHER

HagenBeck Zoo keepers set the apes the food puzzle task as an 'enrichment challenge'
The animals made tools out of twigs to get their dinner from a padlocked box

Otters from a neighbouring lake in the compound marvelled at the activity

Teased with a box of food that was padlocked shut, the furry animals decided to fashion tools out of twigs in a bid to break into the banquet.

But this time, what started as a whimsical activity became the must-see event of the day for a gaggle of otters.

Flocking over to the Orangutan House from their own private lake in HagenBeck Zoo, Hamburg, they are pictured staring intently at their neighbours' relentless attempts to get dinner.

Unfortunately for the orangutans, the visitors were not much of a helping hand.

THE IRAN DEAL FIASCO - AFTER GETTING THEIR BILLIONS IRAN SAYS U.S. MISINTERPRETED THE AGREEMENT

IRAN SAYS WHITE HOUSE LYING ABOUT WORDING OF NUKE DEAL

    By Rick Moran, American Thinker

Iranian officials say that the White House is misleading the public about the details of an interim nuclear agreement reached over the weekend in Geneva.

IRANIANS GOT THEIR BILLIONS, NOW THEY CHARGE WHITE HOUSE MISINTERPRETED AGREEMENT.

    By Carl, Israel Matzav

Iran is claiming that the version of its agreement with the P 5+1 that is posted on the White House website is 'incorrect' (Hat Tip: Shy Guy).

According to a report by Kol Yisrael (radio), a spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry said that the wording of the version that appears on the White House website is a one-sided interpretation of the agreement, and that parts of what were included conflict with what the agreement actually states.

Iran is now saying that the version of the agreement that was arrived at in Geneva differs than what the US has published.

According to a report by Kol Yisrael (radio), a spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry said that the wording of the version that appears on the White House website is a one-sided interpretation of the agreement, and that parts of what were included conflict with what the agreement actually states.
Well, now that $8 billion is already out the door, why not make a claim like that?
     What could go wrong?

WHAT IS CERTAIN IS THAT IRAN GETS TO KEEP

98% OF ITS STOCKPILE OF ENRICHED URANIUM

BREIBART  -  If you don’t believe that Iran is close to assembling a nuclear bomb because of the agreement reached by this administration, think again.

The agreement allows Iran to keep half of the uranium it has already enriched to 20%, and the other half is to be diluted to 5% U-235.

As Powerline reports, “It takes about 8 days and only 2% of the total effort to go from the 20% HEU permitted to the 90% required for weapons grade and only 45 days and 10% of the cumulative effort from the 5% level of HEU.”

The reason for this is simple; most of the time required to make highly enriched uranium comes in the early stages. 90% of the effort is expended to reach the 5% level, 98% to reach the 20% level.

An American Enterprise Institute report states:The work and time required to enrich uranium from its natural concentration (0.7%) to 3.5% low-enriched uranium (LEU) is an order of magnitude greater than that required to enrich 20% LEU to weapons-grade concentrations (90% U-235). That is because centrifuges must spin more than 14,000 kg of uranium ore to produce 1,373 kg of 3.5% LEU, but only 116 kg of 20% LEU to produce 15 kg of weapons-grade uranium.

THE END OF ANTIBIOTICS - SUPERBUGS HAVE WON

    CDC official says

'We've reached the end of antibiotics'

By Rick Moran for The American Thinker

They've been predicting this for years and it looks like it's finally come to pass.

In our human hubris, we think we can outsmart or defeat Mother Nature. It's things like this that remind us how our pitiful efforts to control the natural world usually go for naught.

A high-ranking official with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has declared in an interview with PBS that the age of antibiotics has come to an end.

'For a long time, there have been newspaper stories and covers of magazines that talked about "The end of antibiotics, question mark?"' said Dr Arjun Srinivasan. 'Well, now I would say you can change the title to "The end of antibiotics, period."  The associate director of the CDC sat down with Frontline over the summer for a lengthy interview about the growing problem of antibacterial resistance.

Srinivasan, who is also featured in a Frontline report called 'Hunting the Nightmare Bacteria,'  said that both humans and livestock have been overmedicated to such a degree that bacteria are now resistant to antibiotics.   'We're in the post-antibiotic era,' he said. 'There are patients for whom we have no therapy, and we are literally in a position of having a patient in a bed who has an infection, something that five years ago even we could have treated, but now we can't.'.  Dr Srinivasan offered an example of this notion, citing the recent case of three Tampa Bay Buccaneers players who made headlines after reportedly contracting potentially deadly MRSA infections, which until recently were largely restricted to hospitals.

About 10 years ago, however, the CDC official began seeing outbreaks of different kinds of MRSA infections in schools and gyms.  'In hospitals, when you see MRSA infections, you oftentimes see that in patients who have a catheter in their blood, and that creates an opportunity for MRSA to get into their bloodstream,' he said.  'In the community, it was causing a very different type of infection. It was causing a lot of very, very serious and painful infections of the skin, which was completely different from what we would see in health care.'
I remember in the early 90's being prescribed some antibiotics and the doctor telling me to finish taking the pills even after I feel better. He said at the time that because so many people are not taking the drugs correctly, that there will come a day when most bugs are resistant to antibiotics - and we'll only have ourselves to blame.

If we have, indeed, reached the end of an era with antibiotics, even the smallest cuts could mean death. I don't think we're anywhere near that point, but that's certainly in our future unless Big Pharma can bail us out by developing drugs that can counter the resistant strains of viruses.

    When We Lose Antibiotics,

Here’s Everything Else We’ll Lose Too

If we really lost antibiotics to advancing drug resistance — and trust me, we’re not far off — here’s what we would lose. Not just the ability to treat infectious disease; that’s obvious.

But also: The ability to treat cancer, and to transplant organs, because doing those successfully relies on suppressing the immune system and willingly making ourselves vulnerable to infection. Any treatment that relies on a permanent port into the bloodstream — for instance, kidney dialysis.

Any major open-cavity surgery, on the heart, the lungs, the abdomen. Any surgery on a part of the body that already harbors a population of bacteria: the guts, the bladder, the genitals. Implantable devices: new hips, new knees, new heart valves. Cosmetic plastic surgery. Liposuction. Tattoos.

We’d lose the ability to treat people after traumatic accidents, as major as crashing your car and as minor as your kid falling out of a tree. We’d lose the safety of modern childbirth: Before the antibiotic era, 5 women died out of every 1,000 who gave birth. One out of every nine skin infections killed. Three out of every 10 people who got pneumonia died from it.

And we’d lose, as well, a good portion of our cheap modern food supply. Most of the meat we eat in the industrialized world is raised with the routine use of antibiotics, to fatten livestock and protect them from the conditions in which the animals are raised.

Without the drugs that keep livestock healthy in concentrated agriculture, we’d lose the ability to raise them that way. Either animals would sicken, or farmers would have to change their raising practices, spending more money when their margins are thin. Either way, meat — and fish and seafood, also raised with abundant antibiotics in the fish farms of Asia — would become much more expensive.

And it wouldn’t be just meat. Antibiotics are used in plant agriculture as well, especially on fruit. Right now, a drug-resistant version of the bacterial disease fire blight is attacking American apple crops. There’s currently one drug left to fight it. And when major crops are lost, the local farm economy goes too.

CONTROLLING NEURONS AND ANIMAL BEHAVIOR WITH NANOPARTICLES

Clusters of heated, magnetic nanoparticles targeted to cell membranes can remotely control ion channels, neurons and even animal behavior, according to a paper published by University at Buffalo physicists in Nature Nanotechnology.

The research could have broad application, potentially resulting in innovative treatments for disease that could remotely manipulate selected proteins or cells in specific tissues, or improved diabetes therapies that remotely stimulate pancreatic cells to release insulin.

The work also could be applied to the development of new therapies for some neurological disorders, which result from insufficient neuro-stimulation.

By developing a method that allows the use of magnetic fields to stimulate cells both in vitro and in vivo, this research will help unravel the signaling networks that control animal behavior.

Science fiction today - Reality tomorrow.
It goes without saying that in our government-controlled society, there may come a time when human behavior that does not suit those in power will also be modified with perhaps only one session in a behavior-modification booth at your local police department.

Or better still, with a magnetic nanoparticles gun authorities will perhaps be able to do collective behavior modification of an entire crowd.

THE MINDWALKER - THE WORLD'S FIRST MIND-CONTROLLED EXOSKELETON

Check out MindWalker — an exoskeleton that will soon enable paralysed and locked-in people to walk using only their mind. Ah, who are we kidding — we're ALL going to eventually want this for ourselves!

The groundbreaking device, which is currently under review by the European Commission, consists of three main elements: The exoskeleton itself, a virtual-reality user interface, and the mind-reading component. It was developed by a consortium of several major universities and companies.

Users control the MindWalker using an EEG cap that measures electrical activity at various points  across the scalp. There are a number of different ways to control the exoskeleton in this way, but the best model involves wearing a pair of glasses with flickering diodes attached to each lens.

NEW HOPE FOR ALZHEIMER'S, DEMENTIA AND BRAIN DAMAGE PATIENTS WITH ISRAELI TREATMENT

Israeli researchers have found that high levels of oxygen in a pressurised atmosphere can significantly improve chronic brain damage.

The study, carried out by Tel Aviv University and the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center in Tzrifin, showed how patients who sustained brain injuries from 20 years ago improved their cognitive and physical responses following the treatment, Xinhua reported.

Doctors worldwide treat brain injuries with physical rehabilitation, but its effects have been limited partly because the window of opportunity to repair the brain damage after the injury is short.

According to the Israeli researchers who worked on the study, the advantage of using hyperbaric oxygen - high levels of oxygen in a pressurised cabin - is that the oxygen reaches deeper into the brain tissues, reviving dormant nerve cells and reactivating blood vessels.

Researchers were also positive that the study, published recently in Public Library of Science's journal PLOS One, will help treat other diseases linked to brain injury and aging, such as dementia and Alzheimer's.

"Maybe in the future we'll be able to give anti-aging treatment that will strengthen the functioning of the brain and preserve it for the rest of one's life," Eshel Ben Jacob, professor from the Tel Aviv University's School of Physics and Astronomy and the Sagol School for Brain.

SEVEN HUGE LOOPHOLES IN IRAN AGREEMENT

The first preliminary nuclear deal the six world powers (US, Russia, China, UK, France and German) signed with Iran before dawn Sunday, Nov. 24, at the end of a four-day marathon, failed to address the most questionable aspects of Iran’s nuclear program, i.e. its clandestine military dimensions.

The accord confined itself to aspects of uranium enrichment and stockpiles. UN inspections were expanded – but not applied, for instance, to Iran’s concealed nuclear sites - or even the Parchin military base where Iran is suspected of having tested nuclear-related explosions.

    1. Parchin: This long-suspected facility remains out of UN oversight. President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry boasted after the signing that daily IAEA inspections will take place at Fordo and Natanz.

However, cameras are already fixed at both those facilities without an agreement, whereas Tehran’s consistent denial of IAEA access to Parchin is not addressed.

    2. Secret nuclear locations:  Under the heading "Possible Military Dimensions," the last IAEA report noted: "Since 2002, the Agency has become increasingly concerned about the possible existence in Iran of undisclosed nuclear related organizations, including activities related to the development of a payload for a missile.”

The watchdog has received information indicating activities "relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device." This was further corroborated by new information obtained since November 2011.

Tehran’s non-cooperation for investigating these findings is not mentioned in the Geneva interim accord, nor was it addressed in the negotiations.

    3. Dirty bombs: Iran doesn’t need a full-scale nuclear bomb or missile warhead for attacking Israel. For decades, Tehran has been working on perfecting hundreds of dirty bombs as part of its nuclear program, by adding plutonium or enriched uranium to conventional bombs.

These weapons are easy to make and easy to use. In the hands of Hizballah or other Shiite terrorist organizations in Syria or Iraq, for instance, they could be used to strike Israel without leaving a trail to Tehran.

This peril too was ignored by the six powers in Geneva.

    4. Rollback. While President Obama has presented the deal as a first step toward freezing or even rolling back “key aspects” of Iran’s nuclear program. The fact remains that, so long as Iran is permitted to enrich uranium, even though this is restricted to a low 5 percent grade, it is free to produce as much fissile material as it wants, whenever it wants. This seems more like roll forward than roll back.

    5. Enrichment. Obama and Kerry said the new deal does not recognize Iran’s right to enrich uranium. They were contradicted by the Iranian president and senior negotiator as well as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. So what is the truth? If Iran won recognition for this right, it blows the bottom out of the Non-Proliferating Treaty because, in no time, all the signatories may start enriching uranium with permission from the big powers. Neither is there any point in making Iran join the NPT’s Additional Protocol for snap inspections.

    6. Centrifuges. Iran has undertaken not to add new centrifuges to its enrichment facilities, according to President Obama, but there is nothing to stop it from keeping up their production. In the six-month interregnum for negotiating a comprehensive nuclear deal, Tehran wins time to turn out enough centrifuges to substantially expand its production of enriched uranium.

    9. A leap to breakout:  Far from being static or in freeze, as the Americans claim, Iran is free to step up centrifuge production and boost its stock of 3.5 percent enriched uranium, thereby accumulating enough material to enhance its capacity for producing enough weapons-grade uranium to break through to a nuclear bomb rapidly enough to defy detection by the IAEA or Western intelligence until it is too late.

The first loophole appeared hours after the new accord was signed:
Iran’s lead negotiator, Deputy Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, announced that his country’s enrichment rights had been recognized in the negotiations, after which Iranian President Hassan Rouhani praised the supreme leader’s guidelines for achieving world power recognition of Tehran's “nuclear rights.”

However, Secretary of State John Kerry in his first appearance after the signing denied this concession had been made. He said: “The first step, let me be clear, does not say that Iran has a right to enrich uranium."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov lined up solidly behind the Iranian version of the accord, confirming world recognition had been extended for Iran's right to peaceful nuclear energy, including the right for enrichment.

Out of step with the celebratory mood in Geneva and Washington, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu warned that the deal would not impede Iran’s capacity to gain a nuclear weapon.

He challenged President Obama’s words that the deal was a historic achievement and called it a historic mistake, which would not obligate Israel. Israel, he said stood by its right to self defense against a regime dedicated to its destruction. As prime minister, Netanyahu pledged not to allow Iran to procure a nuclear weapon.

President Obama also announced that key aspects of Iran’s nuclear program will be “rolled back” against limited sanctions relief and the release of deposits (nettng Iran $6-7 billion in revenue.)

He said that no new centrifuges would be activated for the enrichment process, work would stop at the Arak heavy water reactor and UN inspections expanded to daily visits at the Natanz and Fordo enrichment plants to ensure that uranium is not enriched above the 5 percent permitted by the accord.

The core sanctions architecture will remain in place, Obama promised, pending a comprehensive solution to be negotiated in the next six months, but no new sanctions would be imposed.

Lavrov summed up the four-day conference by saying: "Considering the whole body of circumstance, there are no losers [in the Geneva deal], all sides are winners” -   a view seriously challenged by Israel, Saudi Arabia and most other Middle East governments.

IRAN DEAL - MYTHS VERSUS FACTS

    By Ben Shapiro, Breibart

Myth: The agreement is a step forward in that it bars Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Fact: The agreement explicitly allows Iran to develop nuclear capabilities in violation of United Nations resolutions, giving Iran the leeway to lie about its use of fissile material.

“From the existing uranium enriched to 20%, retain half as working stock of 20% oxide for fabrication of fuel for the TRR. Dilute the remaining 20% UF6 to no more than 5%. No reconversion line.”

Myth: This rolls back the existing Iranian nuclear weapons program to a significant degree.

Fact: The difference between 20% enrichment and 5% enrichment is relatively minute. There is no verification mechanism to ensure that the watered-down stuff is not reconverted.

“Iran announces that it will not enrich uranium over 5% for the duration of the 6 months. Iran announces that it will not make any further advances of its activities at the Natanz Fuel Enrichment Plant (1), Fordow (2), or the Arak reactor (3), designated by the IAEA as IR-40.”

Myth: This significantly hampers Iran’s nuclear development capabilities.

Fact: Not only does the agreement’s verification provide only weak checks on facilities the west knows about, it completely ignores the Parchin facility near Tehran.

“Provision of specified information to the IAEA, including information on Iranˈs plans for nuclear facilities, a description of each building on each nuclear site, a description of the scale of operations for each location engaged in specified nuclear activities, information on uranium mines and mills, and information on source material. This information would be provided within three months of the adoption of these measures.”

Myth: This gives the west brand new information about Iranian nuclear facilities.

Fact: This gives the Iranians three months to fabricate information about their nuclear facilities.

“Daily IAEA inspector access when inspectors are not present for the purpose of Design Information Verification, Interim Inventory Verification, Physical Inventory Verification, and unannounced inspections, for the purpose of access to offline surveillance records, at Fordow and Natanz.”

    Myth: This is serious surveillance.

Fact: This is deeply unserious surveillance. Inspectors may not show up unnaounced to check out design information, physical inventory, or interim inventory. Unannounced inspections are only allowed under the agreement “for the purpose of access to offline surveillance records” at two of the nuclear reactors, but not at Arak or Parchin at all. The most important type of nuclear verification is monitored by the Iranian government, including “managed access” to centrifuge assembly, uranium mines and mills, and centrifuge rotor production workshops and storage facilities. In other words, all the important information gets filtered by the Iranian government.

The rest of the agreement constitutes goodies the west will give to Iran, including “No new nuclear-related UN Security Council sanctions,” “No new EU nuclear-related sanctions,” and suspension of US and EU sanctions on “gold and precious metals,” as well as Iranian petrochemical exports.

There are multiple other problems with the Iran deal text, including the fact that Iran is allowed to continue centrifuge production, supposedly to “replace damaged machines” – but, as mentioned, inspection of centrifuges is monitored by the Iranian government under “managed access.” So Iran’s centrifuge production can continue wholesale under the guise of replacing damaged materials no one can inspect.

It is no wonder the Iranian government is so thrilled with this deal. They gave up virtually nothing, and gained six months during which Israel is completely isolated internationally – a period during which they can speed along their path toward a nuclear weapon. And anyone who thinks President Obama is humble enough to declare this deal a failure in six months, no matter how much of a failure it is, has never seen this egotistical Commander-in-Chief in action.

    Noah Beck's Analysis

Obama’s Iran Moves Could Start World War III

Excerpt - The consequences of the deal

    1) The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) will effectively be finished. The world’s most volatile region will become even more explosive as other regional players scramble to establish their own nuclear arsenals to counter Iran’s. And rogue nations will realize that by following Iran’s deceptive playbook, they too can develop a nuclear capability.

    2)  The force of U.N. Security Council Resolutions will be further diluted, as Iran will continue flouting six of them with impunity.

    3) Iran-backed terrorist organizations — including Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Hezbollah — will grow emboldened by the nuclear umbrella of their patron.

    4) Terrorism could go nuclear, should Iran share some of its nuclear materials with the terrorist groups that it supports.

    5) U.S. influence in the Middle East will erode even more, as Obama further damages U.S. relationships and influence in the region.

    6) U.S. credibility throughout the world will plummet. If the U.S. cannot be trusted to provide strong leadership on the national security issue of greatest concern to the free world, where U.S. interests are directly at stake, what does that mean for U.S. credibility more generally?

    7) Global instability and oil prices will skyrocket. If Israel, with Saudi assistance, strikes Iran’s nuclear program, the Iranian retaliation that follows could spark World War III.

Will Iran attack Saudi oil fields or otherwise pour more fuel onto the Sunni-Shia fire in Syria?

Will Iran and Iran-backed Hezbollah (estimated to have at least 45,000 missiles) launch a massive attack killing thousands of Israeli civilians?

Will some of the Syrian chemical weapons held by Bashar al-Assad (another Iranian ally) end up hitting Israel? How would Israel respond? Is this how Armageddon happens?

    8) U.S. interests will be attacked. Obama may think that his policy of appeasement will shield the U.S. from Iranian reprisals, but the opposite is true. When the U.S. appears so weak and ready to abandon allies (as with Egypt, Israel, and Saudi Arabia), Iran has less fear of attacking the U.S. and more reasons to do so, as a way to exacerbate U.S. tensions with Israel.

Will attacking U.S. interests be yet another Obama “red line” that gets crossed with impunity? If so, then whatever is left of U.S. deterrence and credibility will have been destroyed. If not, then the U.S. will get sucked into another Mideast war but on terms dictated by the adversary, and without any first-strike advantage.

The catastrophic consequences outlined above would all directly result from Obama’s disastrously weak — but still reversible — policies on the Iranian nuclear threat.

THE IRAN AGREEMENT - NOW THE ALARMING DETAILS ARE SURFACING

    The devil's in the details:
Iran can keep building plutonium reactor after all

     By Carl of Israel Matzav

Remember how we were promised that Iran couldn't make progress on the plutonium reactor in Arak during the next six months? Well, not quite

Sunday's agreement to curb Iran's nuclear program contains an apparent gap that could allow Tehran to build components off-site to install later in a nuclear reactor where it has promised to halt work, experts said.
They said any impact of the omission is likely to be small if Iran follows other undertakings in the interim accord, which is designed to restrain Tehran's nuclear program for six months in return for limited sanctions relief.
But the gap, which one diplomat described as a potential "loophole", could provide a test of Iran's intentions, and demonstrates how difficult it will be to reach a final deal to resolve Iran's nuclear standoff with the West once and for all.
    ...
In the deal, Iran agreed that it will "not make any further advances of its activities" at Arak, language that also covers its two big uranium enrichment plants, Fordow and Natanz.
Footnotes hammered out in the final hours of the talks set out a range of activities that would be forbidden at the reactor. For the half year covered by the agreement, Iran is barred from starting the reactor up, bringing fuel or heavy water to it, testing or producing more fuel for it, or installing any remaining components.
But no language explicitly prevents it from making components elsewhere, which could then be installed later.
Former chief UN nuclear inspector Olli Heinonen, now at Harvard university, said the measures were good, but could have been better: "I would have also included the manufacturing of key components," he told Reuters in an e-mail.
And I'm sure that Iran has only the best of intentions.... /sarc.

Oh, and by the way, the agreement only covers the Iranian nuclear facilities that the West has discovered. If Iran has any secret facilities, they're not covered by this agreement either.

    What could go wrong?

HOLLYWOOD ANIMALS SACRIFICED TO ENTERTAIN YOU - WHILE HUMANE SOCIETY LOOKS ON

A detailed investigation by The Hollywood Reporter reveals the hypocrisy of the Humane Society whose disclaimer on almost every Hollywood film - "No animals were harmed in the production of this film" - is shown to be empty of meaning.

Regarding the near drowning of a tiger during the filming of The Life of Pi, an American Humane Society representative wrote:

"I think this goes without saying but DON'T MENTION IT TO ANYONE, ESPECIALLY THE OFFICE!" Johnson continued in the email, obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. "I have downplayed the f-- out of it."

A year later, during the filming of another blockbuster, Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, 27 animals reportedly perished, including sheep and goats that died from dehydration and exhaustion or from drowning in water-filled gullies, during a hiatus in filming at an unmonitored New Zealand farm where they were being housed and trained.

A trainer, John Smythe, tells THR that AHA's management, which assigned a representative to the production, resisted investigating when he brought the issue to its attention in August 2012.

In the bad old days, horses were routinely sacrificed as stunt riders would deliberately force the animal to fall during battles. Broken legs were common. Sometimes, they would use ropes strung along the ground to deliberately trip horses causing more serious injuries.

That was supposed to have been stopped by the AHA. But was it?

A Husky dog was punched repeatedly in its diaphragm on Disney's 2006 Antarctic sledding movie Eight Below, starring Paul Walker, and a chipmunk was fatally squashed in Paramount's 2006 Matthew McConaughey-Sarah Jessica Parker romantic comedy Failure to Launch.

In 2003, the AHA chose not to publicly speak of the dozens of dead fish and squid that washed up on shore over four days during the filming of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Crewmembers had taken no precautions to protect marine life when they set off special-effects explosions in the ocean, according to the AHA rep on set.

And the list goes on: An elderly giraffe died on Sony's 2011 Zookeeper set and dogs suffering from bloat and cancer died during the production of New Regency's Marmaduke and The Weinstein Co.'s Our Idiot Brother, respectively (an AHA spokesman confirms the dogs had bloat and says the cancer "was not work-related").

In March, a 5-foot-long shark died after being placed in a small inflatable pool during a Kmart commercial shoot in Van Nuys.

All of these productions had AHA monitors on set.

The AHA frequently touts a 99.98 percent safety rating — meaning, almost 100 percent of the animals they monitor are not harmed. But the AHA’s internal critics insist the number is farcical, with no real statistical grounding.

They claim the aggregate overall ratio is purposefully inflated by the inclusion of high volumes of impossible-to-count insects —

“Think of days where you’re using, say, 10,000 worms, 10,000 cockroaches, 50,000 ants, 25,000 beetles,” explains one employee — while the number of injuries or deaths is undercounted because the organization doesn’t account for those that occur while an animal is in transit or at a holding facility (as opposed to specifically on set). Adds a colleague: “It’s a total B.S. number made up for PR purposes.”

ONLY HALF OF DRUGS REMOVED BY SEWAGE TREATMENT

Maybe that explains why you have not be feeling yourself for a while.

Only about half of the prescription drugs and other newly emerging contaminants in sewage are removed by treatment plants.

That’s the finding of a new report by the International Joint Commission, a consortium of officials from the United States and Canada who study the Great Lakes.

“The compounds show up in low levels – parts per billion or parts per trillion – but aquatic life and humans aren’t exposed to just one at a time, but a whole mix,” said Antonette Arvai, physical scientist at the International Joint Commission and the lead author of the study.

More than 1,400 wastewater treatment plants in the United States and Canada discharge 4.8 billion gallons of treated effluent into the Great Lakes basin every day, according to the study.

Six chemicals were detected frequently and had a low rate of removal in treated effluent: an herbicide, an anti-seizure drug, two antibiotic drugs, an antibacterial drug and an anti-inflammatory drug.

Caffeine, acetaminophen and estriol (a natural estrogen) also were frequently detected in sewage but had high removal rates.

Triclosan, an antibacterial and antifungal compound found in some soaps, toothpastes and other consumer products, has proven acutely toxic to algae and can act as a hormone disruptor in fish. Triclosan was found frequently, according to the new report and plants had “medium removal efficiency.”

    VOLCANIC GEYSER ERUPTS ON ROAD
    NEAR ROME AIRPORT
Italy has lots of active volcanoes, so Italians should be rather blase' about this rather small eruption.  Hundreds of thousands of Italians live on the slopes of volcanoes and immediately below, such as those near Vesuvius.

Motorists on Saturday were alarmed to notice hot, stinking gas spurting from a newly formed crater in the middle of a roundabout close to the perimeter fence of Rome’s Fiumicino airport -- less than 900 yards from the end of a runway

Spectators gathered around the smoking crater, which measured about six feet wide and three feet deep, before firefighters and vulcanologists arrived to seal off the roundabout to prevent inhalation of the gas, suspected to be a cocktail of carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide and methane. Tests are now underway.
While initial reports suggested the gas came from rotting organic matter trapped underground, one expert said volcanic activity was more likely.  Gas underground can remain hot for tens of thousands of years after volcanoes erupt, and every now and then it can rise to the surface from miles underground.

WEST COAST TIDAL ENERGY PROJECT THREATENS WHALES

By Shari Tarentino, board president of Orca Conservancy, for the Seattle Times

PUGET Sound killer whales retained an important protection recently when a petition to remove them from the endangered-species list failed.

Pacific Legal Foundation in Sacramento had challenged the orcas’ protection under the Endangered Species Act, and the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA) rejected the petition.
But that does not mean our orcas are now out from danger.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is finalizing a $10 million grant for an experimental tidal-energy project at the bottom of Puget Sound in Admiralty Inlet that poses a new threat to orcas that hunt for food there.

Much has been written — some positive, some negative — about the DOE providing research and development funding and financial incentives to jump-start new and innovative energy technologies that might not get off the ground otherwise.

President Obama’s plan to combat climate change has the country debating how we can generate energy in new ways and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.

On the plus side, the DOE’s programs push the boundaries of innovation and have the potential to develop technologies that can help wean America from its dependence on foreign energy.

However, this $10 million tidal-energy project could prove catastrophic.

The project could devastate elegant and innocent marine mammals — specifically, the federally protected orca pods scientists have documented traveling through and foraging in Admiralty Inlet.

These magnificent iconic symbols of the Pacific Northwest are so beloved that neighbors and tourists flock to the area just to catch a glimpse of them.

This massive pilot tidal-energy project intends to place two turbines, each 10 meters high and weighing 386 metric tons, on the inlet floor. A series of blades spin in the middle of both to generate electricity.

In 2009, OpenHydro failed with the pilot project in the Bay of Fundy on the Atlantic Coast when all 12 blades were destroyed within 20 days of installation. Tidal flows were two-and-half-times stronger than the turbine was designed to handle.

The noise and vibrations from the turbines will range between 125 and 175 decibels. Orcas react strongly to a pain threshold of 135 decibels. With the possibility of other sound pollution that could mask the turbines, it’s possible a whale could swim into the blades.

It could be argued that the turbines spin relatively slowly. But given the ocean currents, the Snohomish County Public Utility District abandoned an electronic brake to stop the turbines in the event of an emergency.

Now the plan for an emergency would be to knock a locking pin through the spinning turbines using a remote-controlled submersible vessel, which could be like thrusting a stick through the spokes of a spinning wheel.

If an orca or other endangered species are stuck in the blades, is it possible to take immediate action to prevent death or serious injury? The answer is no.

Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) staff recently recommended this project’s approval based on analysis from the DOE-funded Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Not only was this analysis limited in scope, but can we trust this lab’s impartiality given how it’s funded?

The report doesn’t consider the consequences of a baby whale becoming entangled in these turbines. Nor does it consider project noise, louder than a jackhammer, at levels legally constituting “harassment.” FERC reached its conclusion without benefit of a biological opinion from NOAA, the agency with the appropriate expertise. If we lose one orca the whole population is at risk.

The future of our planet depends on combating climate change, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of protected species, threatened by experimental projects financed with taxpayer dollars. There is simply too much risk in this project, risk that is entirely avoidable, and too much hope for success tied to unproven innovations.

Let’s take a closer look at this dangerous tidal-energy project, and consider whether it really creates a better world for us and for future generations. Let’s implore the federal government and the Snohomish County Public Utility District to move their experiment someplace where it will not do harm to federally protected species.
