The waters off British Columbia, Canada, are littered with dead starfish, and
researchers have no idea what’s causing it.
Marine biologist Jonathan Martin wrote to a researcher at the Smithsonian
Institution in Washington DC:
“[The starfish] seem to waste away, ‘deflate’ a little, and then just …
disintegrate. The arms just detach, and the central disc falls apart."

There is a possibility that Fukushima radioactive contamination of the Pacific Ocean may have something to do with this.

The article also mentions a starfish die-off on the East Coast. That part of
the world has also been under attack by one recent major oil spill and the
chemicals used to "clean up" the oil.
