Poland is one of the countries showing the most dramatic changes, sometimes being completely gobbled up by its neighbors.

And watch Russia, a giant looming over the puzzle pieces of the rest of Europe.

At one point - brief at the end of the millennium - Germany enlarges over the map, only to shrink again so quickly you can't even see the split into East and West Germany or its eventual reunification.

Most of those border changes occurred along with the loss of life of thousands, and at times millions of people.

How those borders were redrawn:

Europe was bloodied and shaken by conflict between Christian factions and nations through the centuries, and many issues remain unresolved to this day, as we have seen in Northern Ireland, Scotland, the Basque insurrection in Spain, and in other places.

Added to this mix, the European Union has brought millions of Muslims into the continent. They are not integrating well. It's a population of about 53 million people who do not like Western values and who try - peacefully and otherwise - to impose Sharia law into their new societies.
