An EMP event (electromagnetic pulse caused by a giant solar flare or an atmospheric atomic detonation) would fry the electric grid and all electronics, and the USA would turn within hours and days into a place of scarcity, savagery, and millions of casualties from violence and starvation. 
 
Our entire lives now depend on computers, and once they are permanently out of commission there can be no transportation, no distribution of food, no hospital technology, no communication systems at all, other than smoke signals....

• The noise about climate change, Trump and the Russians, gun control, the feminist #MeToo movement - all that and more - has been deafening. 
• However, the most deadly threat to all Americans and their civilization has gone ignored for decades.  It is called EMP, or electromagnetic pulse. 
• An EMP can precipitate the destruction of the entire USA and Canada, and kill most of the population by destroying the electric grid and all electronics.
• We are so dependent on this kind of technology that just one day without it would cause chaos.  A week or month without it would be catastrophic.  Rebuilding the electric grid would take months, or even years.  By then not much would be left of the USA as a civilized society.
• Nuclear power plants would go into meltdown, as they need electrical power to run their coolants.   Millions of people would be affected by the resulting radioactive contamination. (Read more further on.)
• Preparing for an EMP would be relatively inexpensive for the US government and yet, despite recurrent calls for action, Congress has done NOTHING. 

How does an EMP event strike?

• 1)  By the detonation of one or more atomic bombs in the atmosphere above the USA by a hostile state such as North Korea or Iran, or by an anonymous terrorist.   These atomic devices are not hard to obtain. 
• 2)  By a NOT-IF-BUT-WHEN giant solar flare headed in our direction.  It happened before we had electricity and high technology, and the effects were hardly noticed.    The sun emits these deadly solar flares all the time, but since 1859 none has headed straight in our direction.  In as recent as 2012 we  were almost hit.

A giant solar coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth's magnetosphere and induced one of the largest geomagnetic storms on record, September 1–2, 1859.   The associated "white light flare" in the solar photosphere was observed and recorded by astronomers. 

A solar storm of this magnitude occurring today would cause widespread damage to a technology-dependent society. The solar storm of 2012 was of similar magnitude, but it passed Earth's orbit without striking the planet.

 

• It would take years to rebuild the electric grid.  Congress so far has refused to deal with this threat and the moderate financial cost involved.   (See link to EMP related article on this page.) 
• Congress and previous presidents have been more interested in sending trillions of taxpayers' money to Afghanistan, Palestinian terrorists, and other dysfunctional and violent nations all over the world - but have neglected to prevent the collapse of the American civilization by an EMP strike.

Imagine you wake up one day without electric power. 

 None of your electronic devices works either.  You sense something is wrong, get dressed and head for your car to drive to the grocery store and stock up on essentials.  Your car, equipped as it is with electronic parts, won't start. 

You're lucky enough to live within walking distance of a grocery store.  Once you get there it's total mayhem, people are trampling over each other to grab whatever they can.  No way to call police.  You walk back home wondering what is going on. 

The days that follow are of pure savagery, with the country technically and culturally back in the Stone Age.  Bands of armed thugs loot stalled trucks containing food items, and roam cities stealing food and everything they can.  They kill whoever gets in their way. 

The sick, unable to get medical aid, would begin to die.  Non-nursing babies would starve without formula.   

Highways would be clogged with stalled vehicles.  Computers, phones, TVs, and radios would all be useless. 

Remember, there is no transportation, no distribution of food or medicine, no clean water, no working electronics, and no power to run any of the machines we count on to maintain civilization.  And no police presence.    

Along with social chaos, there is starvation.  Urban survivors not part of gangs of thugs would be reduced to eating their pets and wildlife.  Farmers would be unable to defend themselves against bands of thieves. 

Good citizens with guns would fare better than those without them, but only temporarily.  Resources would eventually dwindle to nothing.  Unless you are one of those preppers who have thought of everything and are well stocked, well armed, and well hidden and protected, your chances of survival are zilch.   And this is the prospect for 90% of people living in the USA.

Whether this EMP scenario is caused by a bomb detonated in the atmosphere by a foreign government or a fanatic, or by a giant solar flare directed at us, it does not matter.  An EMP catastrophe is not a matter of if, but of WHEN.  

Congress has been remiss in addressing this issue and providing funds to fortify the US electrical grid.  As it stands now, there are not enough spare parts in America, and they would have to be imported.  It would take many months to reconstruct the grid, but first social order would have to be restored and the mess cleaned up. 

Maybe coastal areas would start the rebirth, as they could more easily access supplies from overseas.  Maybe. 

A disturbing question is WHO would be in charge of the country's reconstruction. 

It's not inconceivable that it would be a foreign power.  China - desperate as it is for land and resources - would perhaps come to the rescue, at a high price.    

So, dear American reader, when your President and Congressmen waste their time talking about marginal issues, ask them what exactly they are doing to  prepare the nation for an EMP catastrophe. 

The Obama administration and the Democrats have said that the worst threat to the USA - besides Trump - is CLIMATE CHANGE!!!!

The Climate Change campaign has been a ruse to divert attention away from real threats such as EMPs, nuclear power plants (NPPs), and overpopulation devouring ever shrinking natural resources while polluting the planet. 

Please keep in mind that without electrical power to operate their machines, nuclear power plants go into meltdown.  After an EMP there would be a series of nuclear power plant meltdowns across the USA contaminating land and killing people.  At present a single case of loss of electrical  power in an NPP can be dealt with, but not when the country is in complete chaos.  

The Trump administration appears not to have effective preparations for a solar-caused or man-made EMP that would  destroy the American civilization and kill 90% of the US population.  

ANOTHER IMPORTANT THING TO KEEP IN MIND is that the number one priority for government authorities at all levels - before, during, and after a disaster - is to avoid panic, and this is why an EMP catastrophe is almost never mentioned.

CONGRESSIONAL REPORT:  An EMP Attack Would Cause Mass U.S. Starvation and kill 9 in 10 Americans

A new congressional report contends that a North Korean electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack on the U.S. would ultimately wipe out 90% of the population.

To date, most discussion concerning the North Korean threat has been on whether the rogue state can accurately hit U.S. cities with its ICBMs.

 

But in an EMP attack, such accuracy is not necessary because the pulse radius would be so large, says Peter Vincent Pry, who recently testified about the EMP threat before a congressional Homeland Security subcommittee.

 

His conclusions are that such an EMP attack would wreak havoc across the whole of the continental U.S.

 

Unlike a conventional ICBM which launches and then goes into a suborbital flight before re-entering Earth’s atmosphere, an EMP warhead need not re-enter Earth’s atmosphere before exploding hundreds of kilometers above its target.

 

Super-EMP weapons are designed to produce a high level of gamma rays, which generate the sort of high-frequency electromagnetic pulse that is most damaging to the broadest range of electronics, the report concludes.

 

And if the EMP device just happens to be part onboard an orbiting satellite, North Korea need only detonate the device remotely via encoded signal. Pry, Chief of Staff of the now de-funded Congressional EMP Commission, told me that at an altitude of 300 kilometers, the resulting electromagnetic pulse would affect all 48 contiguous states.

 

A warhead fused for an EMP in a satellite or ICBM could work on a timer, via GPS, or using an altimeter, says Pry, a nuclear strategist formerly with the CIA, who has a certificate in nuclear weapons design from the U.S. Air Force nuclear weapons lab. He says North Korea could even rig the warhead to detonate in the event that it was intercepted by our own missile defenses.

The consequences of such a detonation would be dire.

 

“The U.S. can sustain a population of 320 million people only because of modern technology,” said Pry. “An EMP that blacks-out the electric grid for a year would [decimate] the critical infrastructure necessary to support such a large population.”

 

In three days, the food supply in local grocery stores would be consumed and the 30-day national food supply in regional warehouses would begin to spoil, says Pry. In one year, he contends that up to 90% of the population could perish from starvation, disease and societal collapse.

 

After generating gamma-rays that interact with air molecules in Earth’s stratosphere, a so-called fast pulse EMP field of tens of kilovolts would only last a few hundred nanoseconds.

 

But in the event of such an attack, aircraft electronics would be fried, as well as electronics in air traffic control towers, and navigation systems , says Pry. “Airliners would crash killing many of the 500,000 people flying over North America at any given moment,” he said.

 

Pry says electro-mechanical systems which regulate the flow of gas through pipelines would spark; causing the gas to ignite and result in massive firestorms in cities and large forest fires.

 

There would be no water; no communications; and mass transportation would be paralyzed, says Pry. In seven days, he contends that reactors in U.S.’ nuclear power plants would essentially melt down, spreading radioactivity across most of the nation.

 

What could be done to ensure a quick restoration of the grid?

 

Some 2000 extra-high voltage (EHV) transformers make up the foundation of the U.S. grid, says Pry. But as he notes, since they each weigh hundreds of tons, they are extraordinarily hard to transport. Thus, if most are destroyed, there’s no quick fix.

 

So, how do we best protect against an EMP?

 

The U.S. should be prepared to also include limited surgical strikes to destroy North Korea’s ICBMs, says Pry. But he says the best, safest, and least provocative solution is to EMP-harden the electric grid and other critical infrastructures.

 

But not everyone agrees that North Korea poses a real EMP threat.

 

“There are legitimate concerns about EMP effects, but a non-tested system by a country with limited missile experience lowers the immediate threat,” James Clay Moltz, a professor of national security affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., told me.

 

The U.S. should work with China and South Korea on clear warnings against any such North Korean actions, says Moltz. That includes U.S. statements on the right to pre-empt or shoot down any suspected EMP weapons which, he says, would constitute nuclear attacks on the U.S.

“But predictions of mass U.S. casualties and demands for costly defenses against a [North Korean] EMP attack seem unjustified at this time,” said Moltz.

EMP attack could cause catastrophic meltdown of America's nuclear plants

 

(NaturalNews) The federal agencies regulating nuclear power are scrambling to find a solution to a potentially devastating threat: meltdown of nuclear reactors at such plants stemming from an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack on the U.S. power grid.

 

As reported by the Washington Examiner there is good news and bad news surrounding the issue:

 

The good news is that the issue and proposed fix are easy. The bad news is that there is growing concern that an EMP attack, either from a North Korean nuclear bomb or a solar storm, will occur first.

 

 

 

In particular, federal nuclear regulatory officials are focusing on the cooling pools used to store spent fuel rods that are still very radioactive and could catch fire and explode, spewing radioactive fallout into the atmosphere and across North America.

 

Federal agencies have said that an EMP attack could disable the nation's power grid for months. Most plants use diesel-powered generators for backup power to the water pumps in the cooling pools, and there is only about 17 days' worth of fuel stored at each site.

 

Some members of former President Ronald Reagan's "Star Wars" team who are now with the Foundation for Resilient Societies, a non-profit group examining the issue, saw the problem clearly following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan. Afterward, the group suggested switching from diesel generators to long-lasting solar power.

 

 

"Dangerous course"

 

"That's when the alarm bells went off," Thomas S. Popik, president of Resilient Societies said in an interview with the Washington Examiner. There were similar concerns raised after New England's Pilgrim nuclear facility was forced to shut down during a blizzard.

 

In response, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is currently considering the group's proposed fix, which is rare considering that the agency does not often entertain outside proposals.

 

"It's a national issue," said Brian Sullivan, a proponent of the fix and a retired Federal Aviation Administration investigator. "The NRC needs to change its dangerous course."

 

According to its website, the Foundation for Resilient Societies "is dedicated to cost-effective protection of technologically-advanced societies from infrequently occurring natural and man-made disasters. Our primary mission is scientific research and education."

 

"Our current area of emphasis is protection of the U.S. electric grid through the federal rulemaking process at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and its designated standard-setting organization, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation," the site continues. "We also have a pending Petition for Rulemaking at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for protection of nuclear power plants during long-term loss of offsite commercial grid power."

 

As for the concerns surrounding a man-made or natural EMP burst, they are very real. In April 2014, we reported that several experts around the world say civilians are not ready for widespread, prolonged blackouts that such events would cause.

 

Widespread devastation

In May, we reported that an EMP event that knocked out the U.S. power grid could kill up to 90 percent of the population, according to experts who testified on Capitol Hill.

 

"It strikes at my very core when I think of the men, women, and children in cities and rural towns across America with a possibility of no access to food, water, or transportation," Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., told The Washington Free Beacon. "In a matter of weeks or months at most, a worst-case scenario could bring devastation beyond imagination.

 

"The civilian grid, in my judgment, is very vulnerable," he continued. "Some of the largest transformers, the very largest ones, have an inherent resistance to all but the more intense electromagnetic pulses. But the fact is, we have enough of those mid-range transformers where a major event would be catastrophic."

 

In October, we reported that the billionaire CEO and founder of Elliott Management hedge fund, Paul Singer, issued a warning to subscribers of his financial newsletter that an EMP event would spell disaster.

Other Countries Regard an Unprovoked Nuclear Attack on the USA as a Winnable Option

Since Sept. 11, 2001, analysts have been increasingly concerned terrorists might steal, buy, build, or be given a nuclear weapon — and the War on Terrorism would become a nuclear war.

 

The Department of Homeland Security’s National Planning Scenario #1 is detonation of a 10-kiloton nuclear weapon, as powerful as the Hiroshima bomb, in a location such as New York City or Washington, D.C. 

 

Many experts warn an act of nuclear terrorism is not a question of if, but when.

 

Until the recent protracted nuclear crisis with North Korea, relatively less attention has been paid to the increasing possibility of nuclear war between nations.

 

India and Pakistan are widely regarded as the most likely candidates for a nuclear conflict between states.

 

Although North Korea, Russia, and China have all made nuclear threats against the United States recently, in the case of North Korea and Russia repeatedly, most analysts dismiss these as mere “bluster” and “nuclear sabre rattling” not to be taken seriously. One day, perhaps soon, this may well prove to be a fatal mistake for millions.

 

In the West, generations of leaders and citizens have been educated that use of nuclear weapons is "unthinkable" and the ultimate horror. Not so in Russia, China, and North Korea where their nuclear capabilities are publicly paraded, missile launches and exercises are televised as a show of strength, an important part of national pride.

 

Whereas the U.S. nuclear deterrent is kept low-profile, almost invisible, and its utility and legitimacy much debated, Russia and China run TV documentaries describing how they would win a nuclear war with the United States.

 

The "international taboo" on nuclear warfare is one-sided and far more likely to have a psychologically paralyzing effect on the U.S. and its allies than on Russia, China, North Korea, or Iran.

 

Whereas the U.S. nuclear deterrent is kept low-profile, almost invisible, and its utility and legitimacy much debated, Russia and China run TV documentaries describing how they would win a nuclear war with the United States.

 

The "international taboo" on nuclear warfare is one-sided and far more likely to have a psychologically paralyzing effect on the U.S. and its allies than on Russia, China, North Korea, or Iran.

 

 

 

An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack would be perfect for implementing Russia's strategy of "de-escalation," where a conflict with the U.S. and its allies would be won by limited nuclear use. It's their version of "shock and awe" to cow the U.S. into submission. The same kind of attack is viewed as an acceptable option by China and North Korea as well.

 

Thus, a nation hit with an EMP attack will have powerful incentives to cease hostilities, focus on repairing their critical infrastructures while there is still time and opportunity to recover, and avert national extinction. 

 

Indeed, an EMP attack or demonstration made to "de-escalate" a crisis or conflict is very likely to raise a chorus of voices in the West against nuclear escalation and send Western leaders in a panicked search for the first "off ramp."

 

Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran in their military doctrines and training regard EMP attack as part of all-out cyber warfare, not necessarily as nuclear warfare. 

 

Our proximity to a nuclear war may be suggested by the simple fact that analysts can now imagine many more possible pathways to a nuclear conflict today than was the case during the Cold War, then dominated by a more or less stable relationship between two nuclear superpowers, the U.S. and USSR.

Some analysts think the world is on the threshold of a "new nuclear age" where Cold War rules and assumptions about deterrence no longer apply and the likelihood of nuclear use is greatly increasing.

 

The first nation to use nuclear weapons today — even a rogue state like North Korea or Iran — will immediately become the most feared and most credible nuclear power in the world, a formidable force to be reckoned with, and perhaps the dominant actor in a new world order.
