The beach where nature has transformed a Russian dumping ground for old vodka bottles into a place of beauty because waves have smoothed broken glass into ‘pebbles’ . Glass originally comes from silica, or sand.

Glass Beach on Ussuri Bay, near Vladivostok, was a Soviet dump for old bottles
Over time, the jagged glass smoothed into kaleidoscopic pebbles
The area is now called Glass Beach and is protected by Russian authorities

The authorities in the Far East of Russia have declared the area a specially protected zone - called Glass Beach, sided by dazzling cliffs - as if it was an entirely natural creation.

The colourful glass shines in summer on the black volcanic sand, and in winter amid the white snow.

It is popular all year round with locals, and in summer swimmers and sunbathers come to the colourful recreation spot.

Years of erosion has broken, then rounded and polished the glass, giving the beach a distinctive quality, to the extent that people pay a small fee to come here and enjoy the sight.

Tourists are amazed by shining shore, clean water and splendid view on the Ussuri Bay. Known in Russian as Steklyashka, the beach is perhaps at its most stunning in winter when the snow highlights the vivid colours of the glass.
