Tube station used as Churchill's secret bolthole during WWII could reopen to the public after more than 80 years.

Former tube station and secret World War Two bolthole that contained underground accommodation to reopen

Mayfair's former Down Street station closed to the public in 1932 but was used by Winston Churchill as a bunker

It could accommodate up to 40 people

Transport for London is now inviting businesses to submit ideas to transform the station into a new viable business

Down Street station in London's Mayfair district has been closed to the public since May 1932 due to low passenger numbers

The outside of the station closely resembles the architecture of other tube stations opened at the time. The front entrance is now blocked

It is believed the location close to Westminster made it popular with Churchill. A disused bathtub which forms part of the living quarters still bears the inscription 'WC'

Down Street is still in regular use as part of the Tube's day-to-day operations. These more modern signs, overflow from operational stations and exactly the same as those seen elsewhere on the Piccadilly line cover the station's old, faded signs and are for the benefit of maintenance
