SOLAR POWERED PLANE COMPLETES JOURNEY

Congratulations on this first cross-country flight on a solar powered plane!

This extraordinary flight took place in segments, the last one being successfully completed today. The plane arrived in New York piloted by Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg.

The Solar Impulse runs on about the same power as a motor scooter and stores power from 12,000 solar cells built into the wings in batteries so it can fly at night. It was designed for flights up to 24 hours at a time, but the next model will allow for up to five days and five days of flying by one pilot. Meditation and hypnosis were part of the training for the pilots, as they prepared to fly on very little sleep.
