USING MATH TO PREDICT FUTURE EVENTS

 
 
Most of us find it irresistible to make predictions.  There seems to be a pattern for certain developments.  For example, the fact that revolutionaries often turn into tyrants just as bad or worse than the ones they deposed. Or that supercivilizations get lazy and flabby and are overrun by groups with less culture but more drive.
 
Peter Turchin of the University of Connecticut wants to use math to predict those patterns.  His new field is named CLIODYNAMICS after Clio, the Greek muse of history.
