Ohio County Sherriff, Dan McClelland and his partner in crime Midge - who he has worked with for the past ten years on the police forceAt around 20cm high you'd be forgiven for thinking that a chihuahua isn't much of a threat to a criminal - but Midge, the world's first police chihuahua, has proven doubters wrong - and won over the hearts of viewers.

Appearing on ITV's The Secret Life of Dogs last night, viewers gushed over the tiny crime-fighter, with one asking: 'Is there anything more inspirational?'

Partner for the past ten years to Ohio County Sherriff, Dan McClelland, Midge has earned her spot on the team after a number of high profile busts.

Dan says of his unusual choice in companion: 'It's not the most macho thing to be a police officer with a dog that might look like she might belong to Paris Hilton, but you don't have to be the biggest kid on the block to do good things.'

There's no doubt that big dogs - like the traditional German Shepherd - are more intimidating, but Midge proves why she is the perfect working partner.

Aided by her nose that is sensitive enough to detect ten different types of narcotic, she can squeeze into the tiny corners other dogs just can't reach.

While she might not be big enough to do crowd control or track the bad guy - her strength is her stature and ability to get into those tight spots.

'She's gotten numerous arrests, fines, seizures, vehicle searches, school lockers - she can do in minutes what it might take us hours or days to do,' Dan says.

In her ten years of experience, Midge has learned that when she makes a find she has to stay calm - notifying her partner with a knowing stare.

Midge is the first police dog of her kind, and Sheriff Dan was laughed at when he first suggested her for the jobHer spot on the team wasn't originally welcome, as Dan explains he was probably laughed at when he first suggested the tiny pooch as his new partner.

He said: 'I'm sure there were jokes, but Midge is a pioneer, she has helped to downsize canines nationwide.

'I personally wouldn't like to have a German Shepherd. I like to think I have something just as good but in a smaller package.'

Viewers apparently agreed, saying they were 'loving' little Midge and that the show made them 'ridiculously happy'.
