I just started to read a book I picked up about 15 years ago during a trip to Chile. "En Aquel Tiempo," by Pablo Huneeus, is about life in that country during the presidency of Salvador Allende, a government characterized by social strife and economic chaos, eventually toppled by a military coup d'état, and followed by years of dictatorial repression.
Out of curiosity I checked the author's website and his twitter account. His picture reveals a rather handsome man. I began to read some of his articles posted on his website, and then I found this comment from 2009, when comparing the bloody military dictatorship in Chile and Israel's war on Gaza:
Violencia no faltaba, pero nada como el holocausto palestino practicado por Israel semanas atrás, donde mataron a mansalva a más de 500 niños, sin que a la "comunidad internacional" le importe.
Translation: "There was no lack of violence (during the dictatorship) but nothing like the Palestinian Holocaust put in practice by Israel some weeks ago, where they killed more than 500 children, without the "international community" caring about it."
Pablo Huneeus' sense of moral equivalence - The word Holocaust is improperly used here to make a moral equivalence between the Nazi systematic rounding up, enslaving, and gassing of millions of innocent people for just being Jews - and Israel defending itself against relentless Muslim terror from Gaza, with the subsequent UNINTENDED casualties among women and children used by Hamas as human shields.
Israel's retaliation against Gaza came after Muslim terrorists had showered Israeli communities with hundreds of rockets. Although the rockets are rather crude and haven't killed many Israelis, their objective is not to inflict casualties but to unleash terror.
The terror is real, as it forces tens of thousands of Israeli men, women and children to live in constant fear, with only a few seconds to run to the nearest bomb shelter before a rocket hits a school, a home, or a playground. Children, and even adults, suffer from emotional trauma.

What if every time Chileans retaliated the Argentinian fighters took shelter among their children, and if there were casualties, they used gruesome pictures to the media, with the UN and the others in the "international community" demanding a stop to "the cycle of violence".
Mr Huneeus criticism of Israel's right to defend itself leads us to another issue that he may not have properly examined so far.

THE FORGOTTEN REFUGEES
More than half of Israeli Jews have deep roots in the Middle East and a million of them arrived as refugees from persecution and violence in Arab countries.
But Arabs continue to perpetuate the myth that Jews are "European".

Palestinian Authority, Hamas, Responsible for Torture
Dr. Ammar Dwaik, Director General of the Independent Commission for Human Rights, a Palestinian group, revealed that his group received 782 complaints regarding torture (by Arab authorities) -- 168 in the West Bank and 614 in the Gaza Strip.
In 2005 Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza. The government forced thousands of Jews out of their homes and handed the land over to the Arabs, along with state-of-the art greenhouses so that they could prosper in the agricultural business.
As soon as the Jews departed, the Arabs looted and destroyed the greenhouses and focused their energies on ways of terrorizing the Jews across the border.
At the instance of the US government Gazans held elections - for the first and last time - and chose radical Islamist Hamas to rule over them to this day.
Expatriate Arabs who had returned to Gaza with the dream of making it flourish now that the hated Jews were gone, soon found themselves not only disappointed but frightened by the radical and violent Islamic nature of the regime.
Hamas forced women to wear the hijab, and children to be educated as future terrorists and martyrs. Hamas' summer camps are notorious for training little kids on how to kill Jews, perpetrate acts of terror, blow themselves up, and consider martyrdom as their highest goal in life.

Hamas recruited children to build terror and smuggling tunnels. More than a hundred (at last count) of young boys have died in tunnel work accidents, according to Palestinian sources.
The Hamas elite incites Arabs to sacrifice themselves for the cause, but they live lives of luxury, far from danger. During the latest Gaza war they stayed in a friendly Arab country, far from war and destruction.
During war Gazan fighters routinely use civilian buildings, such as schools and hospitals, to store and launch rockets against Israel. This has been well documented by foreign media and admitted by UNRWA, the UN organization that runs schools in Gaza and the Palestinian Authority.
In fact, dead children are a powerful propaganda weapon for the Palestinians, as ideological ammunition aimed at uninformed people and anti-Semites who then accuse Israel of war crimes.
The Israeli government is aware of this, and so it takes excruciatingly careful measures to avoid civilian casualties - even to the point of putting IDF soldiers' lives in unnecessary danger. Many Israeli soldiers have died so that Arabs would live.
It is not to Israel's advantage to recklessly kill Arab children. Israeli authorities even give advance notice by cell phone and other means when a building is going to be hit, so that the IDF can destroy munitions and rocket launchers but not civilians. These practices have led the IDF to be recognized as the most moral military army in the world.

What would Chile do? What would Pablo Huneeus do?
Chile, Mr Huneeus's home country, has a tall cordillera to the east protecting it from Argentina. To the west it has the Pacific Ocean, and Antarctica to the south. In the north it has the driest desert in the world, and borders with Peru and Bolivia.

So let's imagine there was no Cordillera de los Andes, and that large Chilean communities were only meters away from the border with Argentina.
Let's imagine that Argentinians hated Chileans so much that they wanted to push them into the sea, and that only the Chilean army stood there to prevent a real Holocaust.
What if Argentinians launched thousands of rockets against Chilean civilians and dug tunnels to infiltrate into family gardens and massacre entire families.
What if every time Chileans retaliated the Argentinian fighters took shelter among their children, and if there were casualties, they used gruesome pictures to the media, with the UN and the others in the "international community" demanding a stop to "the cycle of violence".
So, what would Mr Huneeus recommend in a case like that? Complete surrender to the enemy and the acceptance of the loss of his land and a Holocaust against his people?
Urban warfare is not like past wars when armies settled things in the battlefield - army against army - while families were left behind.
Urban warfare is designed to put the most moral army at a disadvantage. The urban fighter knows that collateral damage has enormous propaganda value - particularly in the case of the Jews, when the world is already predisposed to finding fault with Israel no matter what it does.
Mr Huneeus criticism of Israel's right to defend itself leads us to another issue that he may not have properly examined so far.
One of the false accusations against Israel is that it is an occupier of Arab land.
First of all, the Jews have a civilization and a history going back several thousand years in the Land of Israel. It's in history books. It's in the ruins and artifacts that exist all over the land. It's in the continuous Jewish presence in Jerusalem and other parts of the country, even after the Roman conquest 2000 years ago.
At that time the Romans murdered thousands of Jews, razed the Jewish Temple, expelled or enslaved much of the population, and renamed Judea and Samaria "Palestine" so as to erase all memory of the Jewish presence there.
Arabs are new arrivals. Islam itself came with the Muslim conquerors in the 7th century. But the population itself was thin and only grew when attracted by jobs as Zionist Jews began draining the swamps and making the desert bloom.

It's Chileans who are occupiers. Chileans are occupiers, being the descendants of European conquerors who usurped the land from indigenous people who had lived there for thousands of years.
It is rather ironic to see critics in the Americas liberally throw accusations of "Israeli occupation" when they themselves are obvious occupiers of Indian land, and not offering any indication of being willing to give the land back.
Furthermore, Chile engaged in the conquest of additional territory during the War of the Pacific in the 19th century, leaving Bolivia without access to the sea.
Chile also occupies Easter Island, a Polynesian island far removed from continental Chile, and claims large swaths of territory in the Antarctica.
