Playing all day long, the cubs also experience the excitement of seeing mom battle a much larger male bear.  The photos were taken by American photographer DAVID SILVERMAN, 53, in Hallo Bay, Alaska.
Adorable: The tiny bear cub rolls around in the grass in its home in Hallo Bay, Alaska, seemingly carefree, with its mother nearby

Playtime: The mother and her cub play together, with the baby rolling around on its tolerant parents stomach while she lies on the floor

See more lovely images of cubs and mom, and the battle with a huge male grizzly

Bear hug: This is the moment an adorable six-month old grizzly bear cub gets a piggy-back from its mother

Own two feet: The cub stands up on its hind legs
The cub can already stand on two feet
to make himself look bigger and more threatening.

Danger: Later photos show the cubs cowering behind their mother as they run into a threatening male wandering the land
A threatening male approaches mom.  The cubs hide behind her.  She is willing to fight to the death.

Aggression: The adult bears have a thunderous and aggressive encounter but the cubs can do nothing but stand nearby and watch

The cubs wait for mom to beat up the intruder.

Unscathed: The mother bear manages to escape the fight without suffering serious injuries at the hands of the bigger, male bear

Saved: A cub, around six months old, walks beside its mother  after the fight, which may have left the cubs with a very slim chance of survival, should their mother have been killed or seriously hurt
I've got the bravest and strongest mom in the world.

Hitching a ride: The mother obligingly lowers herself so the struggling cub can jump on top for a piggy back
Time to hitch up a ride

Riding high: The cub gets a firm grip on its mother as she starts to run off to find somewhere safer after the dangerous encounter

Time together: Even when the mother is not walking, her cub remains on her back in this touching picture showing the strength of the bond between the young bear and its parent

Holding on: The two are so close that the cub continues to embrace its mother, even when she stops moving and lays in the grass

Grabbing a seat: The baby tries to grab a seat on its mother's back again but this time she is not being quite so obliging

Nap time: Both bears lie down after what must have been an exhausting day playing, then fighting the threat from the larger animal

Fond embrace: The cub appears to be wrapping its arms around its mother as they rest in the grass at Hallo Bay in Alaska

Banding together: The baby sits on its mother's back in another picture showing the touching relationship between the matriarch and baby
