In scenes following the swift-water rescue, the large dog was seen jumping up and licking the McKinney Fire Department firefighter to thank him for saving his life.

'His feet hit the ground and he almost instantly went towards the firefighter that had saved him, jumped all over him, licked all over him,' photographer Michael O'Keefe, told NBC DFW.

The ordeal unfolded around 3.30am on Friday after the unidentified man, who had been swept up in rushing waters beneath a bridge, called police from his cellphone to report the incident, the McKinney Courier-Gazette reported.

The man had hoisted the dog on his shoulders while he waited for help to arrive.  He told dispatchers that he was not sure of his location and that he was scared the water would engulf him, according to McKinney Fire Department spokeswoman Stacie Durham.

Using pings from his cellphone, a search team was able to determine his exact location before arriving to find the man, who was clinging onto his dog in the flood waters, trapped in a tree, according to the Courier-Gazette.

Authorities said shortly after the call, a woman reported being stuck on a road in her stalled car and that water was coming into it.

Durham said the woman was saved with a swift water rescue by emergency personnel.

Another call came in about two hours later, with a driver reporting that rushing water had risen up around his car, and that it had started coming inside while he sat in a parking lot.

Durham said that driver had managed to escape the car and leave by the time emergency personnel arrived at the scene.
