Hungry chap: If mum is anything to go by, baby is going to need to eat a lot of vegetation to give him the energy for all that growing

    Calves are born underwater, and the mother must help her vulnerable calf to the surface so it can take its first breath.
     
    But infants can typically swim by themselves after only an hour.
     
    The baby manatee will be dependent on its mum for up to two years, during which time she will nurse it.

    Protected: The endangered creature is the only newborn in the country, and only 10 zoos in the whole of Europe have manatees


    Enjoying the attention: Calves are born underwater, and the mother must help her vulnerable calf to the surface so it can take its first breath
     
    The beautiful creatures spend almost all of their time eating, resting and travelling, and have to eat around 10-15 per cent of their body weight in vegetation every day.
     
    But if mum is anything to go by, baby is going to need to eat a lot of vegetation to give him the energy for all that growing.

    New surroundings: The baby manatee will be dependent on its mum for up to two years, during which time she will nurse it

    Endangered: Manatees live for an average of 40 years in the wild, growing up to 13ft long, and can be found along the North American east coast, in the River Amazon, and on the west coast of Africa

    Life in the wild: Most human-related manatee deaths come from collisions with boats, as manatees have to stay near the surface so they can reach air easily
