A specialist whale rescue team was deployed from Kaikoura in the South Island, cutting away at the ropes trapping the whale for hours, reports StuffNZ.

The crew flew into Wellington at about 1pm, before maritime police escorted them to the scene on the Lady Elizabeth IV.

They later used the police launch's small tender to get closer to the stuck whale, which was tangled in cray pots and buoy lines.

'It was entangled in the cray pots and the buoy. It was just a baby whale, a juvenile, and having difficulty and it was in a little bit of distress, ' Wellington Police maritime unit's constable Kyle Smith said.

After hours of cutting the distressed whale free, the crew completed the precarious task at about 5.30pm.

'They cut the lines off him and he swam away out to sea and he seemed pretty happy,' Smith said.

Like other large whales, the humpback is targetted by the whaling industry. Entanglement in fishing gear continues to devastate their populations worldwide.
