KEY POINTS
  • Historically speaking, Jews were one of the European founding nations, and have a much older presence in the continent than many other ethnic groups of Europe that today consider themselves indigenous.
  • But no matter how many generations of Jews had lived in Europe, they have always been regarded as outsiders.
  • European Jews gave their love, efforts, and even their lives for their countries, only to be paid with hate and murder, for just being Jews.
  • Some Jews got sick and tired of it and opted for Zionism, a return to the Land of Israel.
  • Other Jews continued to deceive themselves, and thought that America would be the place where they would finally be equal and free.
  • The case of Senator Charles Schumer, accused of dual loyalties, and even treason for disagreeing with president Obama on the still partly secret Iran deal.
  • The growing violent anti-Semitism in the US media and college campuses.
  • Any American Jew with a minimum of lucidity and self-respect should realize that it's only a matter of time before his home country turns fully against him.
  • And the only country that will be willing to take him and his children will be Israel
  • It's also time for American Jewish progressives to start lending more support to Israeli policies that may be politically incorrect but necessary for the survival of the country.
Inspired by the one hundredth anniversary of the start of World War I last year, I've been reading several books on that subject, and also on World War II, which was essentially its continuation.

One item that keeps reappearing throughout the first half of the 20th century in Europe is the Jewish obtuse insistence on believing that they were "Europeans" and French, or German, or whichever was the nationality of the country they happened to be living in.

Officially, yes, they had European nationalities.  But to the government and the populations there, they were still seen as outsiders.  No matter how many gains Jews made in civil rights and social status over the years, they were still regarded as outsiders with suspect loyalties.

Which is rather funny, when you think about it.  Jews, particularly those engaged in trade, were already residents of Europe more than 2000 years ago, during Greek and Roman times, long before they were expelled from the land of Israel by the Romans.  They lived and worked in Europe, they raised families, they contributed.

Historically speaking, Jews were one of the European founding nations, and with a much older presence in the continent than many other ethnic groups of Europe that today consider themselves indigenous and with greater rights than the Jews.

But the main point of discussion here is how - in spite of European contempt, persecution and genocide - Jews still wanted so desperately first, not be murdered for being Jews; and second, to be regarded as worthy of the same rights as non-Jewish citizens.

Whenever cities and kingdoms were in need of economic stimulus, they invited Jews to settle in.  Once the economy started to pick up, they chased them out, after fleecing them of whatever they owned.  Or they simply murdered them.  The story repeated itself over and over across the European continent.

Israel - Early pioneers

You'd think that Jews would one day say, ENOUGH, this is just not worth it.  We should pool our resources and efforts and try to reclaim our ancestral land of Israel -  then occupied by Muslim invaders - and then re-establish our country there.

But that idea did not take hold until the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, when Theodor Herzl rallied European Jews around the idea of Zionism.

The Jewish Virtual Library defines Zionism this way:

The term “Zionism” was coined in 1890 by Nathan Birnbaum.   Its general definition means the national movement for the return of the Jewish people to their homeland and the resumption of Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel.  Since the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Zionism has come to include the movement for the development of the State of Israel and the protection of the Jewish nation in Israel through support for the Israel Defense Forces.

In short, Zionism is a call to first reclaim, and then protect and defend the Jewish homeland.   No different from what is understood as patriotism in your country and mine.  Anti-Semitic propaganda has given the word Zionism an aura of malevolence that is completely false and unfair.

The road to the re-establishment of a Jewish homeland was fraught with arguments and divisions among Jews, and actual wars against the Muslim invaders who did not want any Jews back on their ancestral land.   But it was achieved.

To this day Israel is only one lost war away from annihilation, and has been forced to defend itself against Arab attacks more than once.

But back to the main subject.

Have you seen the animated movie "An American Tail"?

A family of mice decides to emigrate to the United States because they falsely believe that "there are no cats in America".  Meaning that there are no Cossacks or Crusaders, or a Church Inquisition,  or the assortment of anti-Semitic groups intent on hurting and killing Jews.

How wrong they were.  Of course there were cats in America.   Lots of them.  But the country was so vast, the opportunities so many, that Jews were allowed to survive and even thrive.

Many of first-generation Jews engaged in trade and lived in slums.  The second generation graduated from university.   That's the American Dream.

Years passed, Jews served in the armed forces and fought bravely for their country.  Being so very talented they made extraordinary contributions to science, to the economy, to the arts, and to every activity that made America great.

Some of them even made it to Congress.  Charles Schumer is one of them.
Charles Schumer official portrait.jpg
Like a majority of Jews he is a progressive.  In other words, he supports Democrat policies that purport to help working Americans and the downtrodden - while Republicans only favor the rich.

That is the fable according to the progressive media.  The truth?  Both Democrats and Republicans favor the rich and are deeply in the pockets of special interests.  But that is another story for another day.

Charles Schumer has served Congress with distinction.

Wikipedia has this to say about him:

Schumer was chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee from 2005 to 2009, in which post he oversaw a total of 14 Democratic gains in the Senate in the 2006 and 2008 elections. He is the third-ranking Democrat in the Senate, behind Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, elected Vice Chairman of the Democratic Caucus in the Senate in 2006.
In November 2010, he was also chosen to hold the additional role of chairman of the Senate Democratic Policy Committee starting at the opening of the 112th Congress.

In simpler words, he is a Big Shot in Congress.  I'm sure he was feeling pretty good about himself and his legacy, until his beloved president Obama made a fateful deal with the terrorist state of Iran.
And in a moment of honesty and self-respect Schumer GASP! dared to disagree with something Obama considers crucial for his agenda.

The Iran deal is no good, Schumer said.  And then he gave his reasons, which were quite reasonable.

President Obama and the American flag
You would think that in America, the Land of the Free, a congressman would be allowed to express his opinion on matters of foreign policy, that his position would elicit heated discussion and opposition, perhaps, but anti-Semitic vitriol and a questioning of his patriotism?

No.  You would not think that.  Not in America.

But Schumer, although a life-long loyal Democrat, is Jewish.

So the crowd subservient to president Obama - very particularly the progressive media that chants We-love-Obama-right0-or-wrong -  aimed their knives at Schumer and hit where it hurts most:  his patriotism, his loyalty to America.  They plainly accused him of having DOUBLE LOYALTIES.

It's as if he just got off the boat from Europe.

Why do you dare to question the president's judgment, Schumer?

What country are you siding with, Schumer?  Could it be Israel, that has been so obstinately against the deal since day one?

Could it be that your first loyalties are with the Israel, Schumer?

Are you siding with Jewish warmongers, Schumer?

It was not just one or two media attacking Schumer this way.  They practically ganged up on him.

President Obama led by example, using well-known code words to accuse THE JEWS and their money of trying to sabotage his (so-far) secret deal with Iran.

And back to our subject.

Any American (or Canadian, or Australian, etc.) Jew with a minimum of lucidity and self-respect would realize that it's only a matter of time before his home country turns fully against him.  Will it be as bad as Nazi Germany?  We hope not.  But things are getting uglier by the day.

The new generation of American Jewish college students finds that - no matter how leftist and politically correct their ideas are - they are shunned and often attacked for simply being Jewish.

Their parents and grandparents made America great, but now Jews are being regarded as fair target for hate and violence.

This is more so as American demographics are changing and many students and faculty have roots in countries where anti-Semitism is official government policy, and where you can kick and even kill Jews with impunity.

So to the Schumers of America and their children, isn't it time to question whether you should offer all your hard work, your talents, your patriotism and your love to a country where you are still "tolerated," and where you are still regarded as an outsider with suspect loyalties?

Or should you take a serious look at Israel - and no matter how liberal and progressive you consider yourself to be -  stop criticizing it with so much vehemence, and loving it more.

You don't have to move there.  Just give more support to Israel and policies aimed at reinforcing its security and viability - no matter how politically incorrect those policies may be.

One day your children - American, Canadian, or Australian children - may be forced to pack up their bags, and the only country that will be willing to take them will be ISRAEL

Here is James Taranto writing on the ugly anti-Semitic attacks on Senator Schumer:

Let's not mince words: Murmuring about "money" and "lobbying" and "foreign interests" who seek to drag America into war is a direct attempt to play the dual-loyalty card.

It's the kind of dark, nasty stuff we might expect to hear at a white power rally, not from the President of the United States-and it's gotten so blatant that even many of us who are generally sympathetic to the administration, and even this deal, have been shaken by it.

This sort of rhetoric has started at the top, as the New York Times reported last week. In a meeting with two leaders of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, "the president accused Aipac of spending millions of dollars in advertising against the deal and spreading false claims about it, people in the meeting recalled":

So Mr. Obama told the Aipac leaders that he intended to hit back hard.

The next day in a speech at American University, Mr. Obama denounced the deal's opponents as "lobbyists" doling out millions of dollars to trumpet the same hawkish rhetoric that had led the United States into war with Iraq. The president never mentioned Aipac by name, but his target was unmistakable.

Obama's supporters in the media have parroted this line.

Here's CNN's Fareed Zakaria (an Indian-born Muslim), in an exchange with hostess Brooke Baldwin noted by HonestReporting.com:

Zakaria: If you look at somebody like Sen. Schumer, if you ask yourself what does he gain by supporting the deal? Not very much. What does he gain by opposing the deal? If he were to support President Obama on this, if he were to support this deal, he knows it would create a firestorm of opposition, particularly among, perhaps, you know, wealthy supporters; he wouldn't be able to raise as much money

Baldwin: So it's money.

Zakaria: It's money, it's the possibility that you lose support of a core group of supporters. There's a very strongly organized campaign against the deal. There isn't a particularly strong campaign organized for the deal, so there's an asymmetry of cost. So if you vote for this deal, you don't get a lot. But you get a huge opposition against it.

The "use of anti-Jewish incitement as a political tool" is a "sickening" development for sure, but it's not a new one. As Elliott Abrams notes in the Weekly Standard:

The president . . . is here feeding a deep line of anti-Semitism that accuses . . . American Jews of getting America into wars.

Of course this goes back [to] World War II and the accusations against Franklin Roosevelt, whose anti-Semitic critics called him "Rosenfeld"; the Internet is filled with such accusations.

Daniel Greenfield writes about Obama's anti-Semitic rants:

“It’s my birthday and I’m going to be blunt,” Obama told the Jewish leaders meeting with him.  When they complained that, “Words have consequences, and when they come from official sources, they can be even more dangerous,” he was unapologetic.

“If you guys would back down, I would back down from some of the things I’m doing,” he warned.

By that he meant that if they stopped objecting to the Iran deal, he would stop accusing critics of his nuclear sellout to Iran of being money-grubbing warmongers.

Obama complained, “It's been a really busy day. You'd think they'd be nicer to me on my birthday.”

Shortly after his meeting with Jewish leaders, he and his close Iranian-born adviser Valerie Jarrett skipped the line at Rose’s and got the party started.

Roman Jews
the jewish roman ghetto
While most people (rightfully) identify Italy as a Catholic country, its capital city, Rome, actually lays claim to the oldest Jewish population in Europe.
The first Jews likely arrived as messengers sent by Judah Maccabee in the second century B.C.E. Jews have continued to live in Rome since then, in spite of recurrent persecution.

Spanish Jews
The history of Spanish Jewry dates back at least two thousand years to when the Romans destroyed the Second Temple in Jerusalem, and brought Jews with them back to Europe. Since that time, the Jews of Spain (also known as Sephardim) have experienced times of great oppression and hardship, as well as periods of unprecedented growth and renewal.
