Nature is more wonderful than anything humans could ever create.

Eerie: The blue glow lights up the beach at Penmon Point on Anglesey in North Wales and it appears to look more like an alien lifeform

  • The luminious blue glow at Penmon Point on Anglesey is caused by a chemical reaction called bioluminescence
  • It occurs when tiny organisms in the water are disturbed as the waves break on the shore, creating the eerie hue
  • These incredible images were captured by photographer Richard Smith, 33, from Cheadle Hulme in Cheshire

Luminious: The glow is due to a chemical reaction called bioluminescence, which occurs when tiny organisms in the water are disturbed as the waves break on the shore
Glowing eerily in the dawn mist, a beach in Wales is bathed in a luminous blue. Like evidence of an alien lifeform, the unearthly light seems to emanate from just below the surface.

But the ethereal glow at Penmon Point on Anglesey is actually caused by something very much of this world – a chemical reaction called bioluminescence, which occurs when tiny organisms in the water are disturbed as the waves break on the shore.

Avatar-like: The incredible images were captured by photographer Richard Smith, 33, from Cheadle Hulme in Cheshire

Photographer Richard Smith, 33, from Cheadle Hulme in Cheshire captured the incredible scene. He said: 'When I pulled up in the car park the lights were flashing along the whole stretch of beach and my initial thoughts were "there a lot of people fishing here tonight".

As waves lap up against the stony beach the brightly coloured algae comes to the fore, which gives an almost ghostly fog above the sea

'I just assumed the lights were being produced by headlamps. It was extremely hard to capture as although the lights were very bright, they were very sporadic and not happen at regular times.

'I was really fortunate as I had just gone down to photograph the lighthouse and the Milky Way if I was lucky.'

Bioluminescence is similar to the effect created by fireflies which glow to attract prey.
