London-born Israeli journalist David Landau, a former managing editor of The Jerusalem Post who founded Haaretz’s English edition and was editor-in-chief of Haaretz from 2004-8, is to be awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire). 

Landau, who began his journalistic career in Israel as a 20-year-old in 1967, will be honored by Queen Elizabeth II in the upcoming Birthday Honors list, Haaretz reported Friday, for his services to peace and his contribution to UK-Israel ties.

What the above report does not mention is that Mr Landau was forced to resign in disgrace after it became known that he had urged the US Secretary of State for the US to RAPE ISRAEL.

At a private meeting of some 20 journalists with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in September, 2007, Ha'aretz Editor David Landau urged the U.S. to "rape" Israel — to force a settlement on the country. In a December 26 story on the incident, Jewish Week editor Gary Rosenblatt quoted Landau saying: "'I told [Rice] that it had always been my wet dream to address the secretary of state' on these vital matters."

 

Despite expressions of dismay by other commentators -- including Jerusalem Post columnist Isi Leibler, who termed Landau's conduct "unconscionable" and "unacceptable," and leading broadcast and print journalist Ehud Yaari who called the comments "embarrassing" -- Landau told Rosenblatt he is actually pleased with his performance.

 

The Ha'aretz editor's objectionable statements are indicative of a striking lack of judgement generally by an individual who has also refused to correct serious factual errors in his newspaper, falsehoods that cast Israel as racist, oppressive and unjust in its treatment of Arabs.

 

In response to repeated calls by CAMERA for redress of inaccurate reporting, Landau has taken the highly unprofessional measure of insisting his staff not address the organization's inquiries regardless of the merit of the issue.

 

Together with Ha'aretz's like-minded publisher, Amos Shocken, Landau has promoted an extreme political position, characterizing Israel as "apartheid" in both the news and editorial pages.

 

Moreover, a number of the paper's contributors go so far as to participate in radical anti-Israel activity outside the country, and figures such as Danny Rubenstein and Gideon Levy denounce Israel in extreme statements at one-sided United Nations meetings.

 

The promulgation of the apartheid slander, like Landau's comment to Rice, is part of the use of the paper as a tool to cudgel Israel down Ha'aretz's preferred political path.

 

Readers in Israel and around the globe, as well as other journalists who cite the publication, may want to consider the bizarre views expressed by senior figures guiding the paper and the disconnect with an Israeli mainstream that does not seek to be "raped" but, as with any normal, self-respecting people, seeks an equitable and prudent resolution of a difficult conflict.

"'Rape' is a word in the English language," Mr. Landau told The New York Sun yesterday as he reconstructed the event. He said several people, "from the right and from the left," spoke at the dinner, and that when his turn came, he said, "Israel, after 40 years of failing to resolve its problem of occupation," needed a push from America. "Rape it into resolving the problem," he told Ms. Rice.

In 2006 the Schoken family, which began Haaretz and still is the largest shareholder in it, sold 25% of the ownership shares in Haaretz to a German investor named group DuMont Schauberg.  (It also is a major funder of the Shimon Peres Center!)  Now according to the leading German news magazine Der Spiegel, the DuMont family amassed the lion's share of its wealth during World War II, in no small part by grabbing property stolen from Jews. 

 

Der Spiegel wrote that although the family tends to depict itself as a victim of the Nazi regime, it essentially profited from it.  Der Spiegel also claimed that the DuMonts used a front group to secretly grab up stolen Jewish property.

According to the British Guardian (Oct 30, 2006), group chairman "Alfred Neven DuMont's father had been a member of the Nazi party." On the DuMont web site, the time line that describes the company's history simply skips over the entire Nazi era mysteriously.  The DuMonts later sued Der Spiegel and won a small libel suit against Der Spiegel for supposed inaccuracies in its report.

HAARETZ' REAL MISSION:  NOT REPORTING BUT DOING PRO-ARAB ADVOCACY

 

HAARETZ , an Israeli newspaper often quoted by the international press, disgraces itself daily with its distorted and often false reporting about Israel.  The publication routinely sides with the Arabs, while denigrating Israel's efforts to protect the population from Arab terror.

Here, in a remarkable article where Haaretz is begging for money, we find out:

What is the mission of a newspaper?

One might think that it is to help people stay informed, or to report the day's events objectively.

Various journalism outlets and professional societies describe their codes of ethics to include truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity, impartiality, fairness and public accountability.

 

How about Haaretz? What is its mission?

 

Haaretz, which as far as I can tell has no written code of ethics, has here provided a mission statement that has nothing to do with journalism and everything to do with advocacy.

Whether one supports Haaretz' editorial stance or not, this explicit description of Haaretz as being primarily a political actor should cause anyone to be against supporting it.

Let Haaretz register as an NGO or an Israeli political party, and let it ask for money to support its views. But don't call it a newspaper.

Judging from this article, Haaretz doesn't even define itself that way. It is a newsletter for a political organization, one that is begging for more members.
